ADHA and ADHA’s Foundation: The Institute for Oral Health will be partnering with City Rescue Mission (CRM) in downtown Jacksonville for a community service day project on Wednesday, June 14. CRM is a 501(c)(3) that provides food, clothing, shelter, emergency services and residential recovery programs to homeless men, women, and women with children.

This inter-collaborative healthcare community program will feature oral health education to approximately 200 homeless men, women and children.

Based on the 2015 Council on Homeless Annual Report 1,566 individuals were homeless in Duval County. In a 2009 survey conducted by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) 90% of the homeless population reported having dental problems. These dental problems were related to the lack of knowledge on the relationship of oral health to overall health, the lack of physical resource availability in which to practice oral hygiene, and the lack of prioritizing oral hygiene and oral health. Tobacco and other drugs can also contribute to the poor oral health of the homeless population. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, the majority of the homeless population (over 75%) smoke tobacco.

During this event, volunteers would utilize interactive activities to educate the homeless population on the following:

  • Relationship of oral health to overall health
    • Would include diabetes and cardiovascular disease
  • Daily oral hygiene procedures
    • Would include dispensing toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss
  • Tobacco cessation
    • Would include education on the negative effects of tobacco on oral health and general health
    • Would include carbon monoxide monitoring
