AAAP
The Alberta Association of Aquatic Professionals (AAAP) is a provincial organization that supports aquatic industry professionals and facilities. The organization is lead by experienced aquatic professionals with a desire to serve and improve the industry. AAAP envisions a province where facilities and individuals come together to support each other, share information and form an influential body. AAAP’s goal is to support aquatic facilities, their managers and staff throughout the province of Alberta. We continue to collect information from and provide support to our members, other related agencies, government and industry to influence standard industry practice and positive change within Alberta’s Aquatic Industry.

Within the Province of Alberta, AAAP aims to:
· Support injury and drowning prevention
· Influence change related to Aquatics
· Offer support to the aquatic industry using aquatic expertise and establishing common industry standards
· Prepare independent recommendations to professionals, industry partners, and government
· Encourage and support consistency in practices across the province
· Support aquatic facilities, managers, operators, programmers and staff
· Provide a central hub for industry information
· Promote professional ethics
· Recommend and influence industry regulations for Alberta which (that) support industry stakeholders
 
John Armstrong
John has 30 plus years in the Risk Management/ Insurance business has allowed him the opportunity to gather firsthand knowledge in mitigating risk, whether it be in the corporate or not for profit sector. His early career in the insurance world concentrated on claims adjusting and underwriting risk before he focused my professional growth on risk management for the corporate client. The professional goal is to procure the best coverage for clients based on results of an extensive risk analysis and understanding the needs of the client. Following graduation from the General Insurance and Business Administration program at Mount Royal College in 1991, John continued his education by obtaining the Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) designation, Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) and the Canadian Risk Management CRM) designation in 2007. He is an active volunteer, currently serving as the President of South Fish Creek Recreation Association (SFCRA), operators of Cardel Rec South which is located on the southern edge of Calgary. He has volunteered for this organization for the last 6 plus years. In his spare time, he enjoys camping with his family and participating in curling in the winter and fastball in the summer.

She is a member of the technology and corporate commercial groups and advises clients with respect to corporate issues relating to statutory requirements, shareholder and director issues, liability issues and other related matters from an organization, operational and transactional perspective, including shareholder and partnership agreements and disputes related thereto. Heather is a current national lifeguard and the President Elect of the Lifesaving Society Canada. Last year heather was recognized by Lexpert as a “Rising Star: Leading Lawyer Under 40”
 
Mike Bryson

Regional Recreation Corporation
Mike Bryson has been in the Recreation Industry for 40 years. He started cleaning dressing rooms in his local rink on weekend and is now the Director of Facilities Management for the Regional Recreation Corporation in Fort McMurray Alberta. Mikes current position oversees ice facilities, golf and grounds, custodial, event set up, swimming pool operations, building operations and safety and security. Previously worked with the Alberta Association of Recreation Facility Personnel in the development and instruction of several courses including, pool operations, building operations, ice facility operations, supervisory, custodial and risk management courses. He continues to teach for the association on a regular basis. Some of Mike’s accomplishments are as follows: *Installation of Ice in Ivor Wynn Stadium for an outdoor NHL charity game *Orlando at the RDV Sportsplex *Doha, Qatar *Manchester England *Glasgow Scotland *Irvine Scotland *Honolulu Hawaii *Numerous contract installation throughout Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and the NWT. Norley Calder
Norley is currently the South Superintendent of Parks for the City of Calgary overseeing about 1000 Ha of maintained passive greenspace and 200 HA of sportfields. He also helped developed and is an instructor of the Turf Science Certificate online program through Olds College and is the Vice President of the Western Canadian Turf Association.
 
Kelly Carter

Lifesaving Society, Alberta and Northwest Territories
Mr. Kelly Carter is the Executive Director with the Lifesaving Society Alberta and Northwest Territories Branch. In his position Kelly has had a significant role in the strategic and operational planning and positioning for the Society to meet opportunities and the growing need for Society expertise and service, including safety management services. He has vast expertise in aquatic facility management, operations, risk assessment and design. Kelly is also a member of the Lifesaving Society Canada’s Safety Standards Commission and is the Secretary of the International Lifesaving Federation’s Rescue Commission. Kelly’s academic achievements include a Bachelor of Management degree from the University of Lethbridge, an Accounting diploma from NAIT and an Emergency Medical Technician diploma from the University of Alberta.
 
Kelli Celeste

Kelli Celeste is the National Account Manager for CIMCO Refrigeration and is responsible for overseeing the company’s relationship with business's operating from coast to coast and with the Smart Rink Connect Association. After graduating from McMaster University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Management, Kelli has spent over a decade gaining experience in the engineering, design, installation and service of arena refrigeration systems.
 
Jeff Couillard

Jeff Couillard, founder of the Big Impact Academy and principal of Attainability Group (a boutique consulting firm focused on building incredible teams) is an experienced leader in the nonprofit, education and community sectors. His vision is to help people (and organizations) change for the better. From leading multi-disciplinary professionals to facilitating change management, keynote addresses to small group facilitation, Jeff has a knack for engaging teams in the conversations that matter. He is a certified Advanced Right Use of Power instructor and sought after trainer and speaker.
 
Gerald Curran

Gerald Curran started his career with CIMCO Refrigeration in 1981 and developed a wide range of experience in practical and theoretical aspect of the refrigeration field. Gerald’s refrigeration education started on the East Cost of Canada at the New Brunswick Community College in St Andrews, New Brunswick with continuing further studies in western Canada at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Gerald’s past field experience included on site troubleshooting and analysis through out Western Canada, and the Territories including working with Permafrost Retention Systems in the Artic. His focus was redirected to administrative duties, Service Operations Manager, Sales Manager and Present as District Manager Edmonton Operations. Gerald’s Management duties also included conceptual design and implementation of Ammonia, HFC & CO2 refrigeration systems for the Food & Beverage and the recreation industry. Gerald is a Senior Instructor and has held a position on the board of directors for Alberta Association of Recreation Facilities Personnel as the Education Representative, an organization that provides in-depth refrigeration training for Artificial Ice Plant Operators. In the United States Gerald was a frequent facilitator for the Ice Arena Institute of Management (iAIM) and the International Association of Assembly Managers (IAAM) .
 
John Duiker

John Duiker has spent most of his youth and adult life in and around swimming pools. For the past 26 years John has been working to create “fantastic water” through technology with Automated Aquatics Canada. John is the Manager of Business Operations and has extensive experience in the areas of filtration, hydraulics, automation and water chemistry. Now considered a leading expert in those areas, he was recently awarded the William Metcalfe award for his work with the newest European technologies here in Canada. He has a passion for the aquatics industry that is contagious, and understands the value of front line service and behind the scenes technical operations. John has had the opportunity to present at conferences and venues around the world and he brings with him a well-rounded perspective on aquatic technologies, theories and systems.

Larry has been working in the Recreation Industry all his life. From Parks & Sportsfields, Arenas, Swimming Pools, Curling Rinks, Golf Courses along with all other recreational duties in a small community. Larry has installed ice in a number of unique places, such a large shopping mall in Doha, Qatar; Honolulu, Hawaii; Orlando, Florida; Glasgow, Scotland; as well as numerous communities in the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut as well as all over Western Canada and the northern United States. He also installed the Outdoor Ice in Hamilton at the Ivor Wynn Football Stadium for the NHL charity game called the "Game to Give". Larry is an avid golfer and works closely with Hockey Alberta and Hockey Canada. He was fortunate to travel to Harbin, China working with their Women's National Hockey Team as well as a number of their Minor Hockey players and Coaches in their Hockey Development Programs.

Arnold Heuver
Arnold was born in the Netherlands and received his formal education there. He worked for some time in farming and Horticulture until his emigration to Canada in 1969. Arnold managed a wholesale Tree Nursery from 1971 until 2011. The nursery consisted of 300 acres of Caliper trees, Pot in Pot growing and container plants. He started his own consulting company in 2012 and works now for nurseries, landscapers and municipalities. Current Activities: Scouting for pest and diseases Pruning workshops Advice on all aspects of nursery operations, landscape and nursery related issues. Education: I.S.A. Certified Arborist Landscape Gardener Journeyman Agriculture College in the Netherlands

Trish is a Registered Yoga & Meditation teacher, a graduate of theatre school and a life long student. She is curious about how we can continue to be conscious and aware amidst the distractions we constantly face. Her passion for sharing mindfulness and stress management comes from her own experience of having worked in the corporate and non-profit sector. During this time, she experienced the incredible benefits of having a mindfulness practice.She was more energized, happy and focused and felt better equipped to manage the stresses of her work. Her passion is sharing the transformative benefits of simple mindful practices with a wider audience: from being more efficient at work, kinder in our relationships to experiencing less stress and burnout on a daily basis.

Michael lives just down the road in stunning Canmore, Alberta (so yes, he’s a very much a live version of “Mike from Canmore!”).

Dave has been in the industry for over 30 years and has worked to install ice at multiple high-profile venues including the Olympics, NHL Games and various special events. He has provided hands on training for ice painting throughout North America for many many years. With that experience, he has gained considerable insight into what works and what does not work in the field of ice painting and maintenance.
 
Brad Maluta
Brad grew up on a farm and got his first motorcycle when he was 3. Brad has been racing motorcycles since 1989 and has always enjoyed wrenching as much as riding. In the spring of 2016 and Brad made the move to Echo Cycle, a motorcycle dealership in the West end of Edmonton, and refers it to be the happiest place on earth. Brad has owned approximately 40 motorcycles throughout his life. There hasn't been many things with an engine that he hasn't worked on. He is a perpetual tinkerer and has thousands of hours of experience maintaining and fixing small engines.

Ross McEwen is a partner of Bright Solutions Inc., a consulting and direct sales LED agency focused on Commercial and Industrial LED retrofits with a specialty in optimizing LED lighting for interior and exterior sports facilities. Ross’ role at Bright Solutions has been instrumental in the consulting and designing of 100’s of LED lighting installations with over 40,000 LED fixtures being installed in Alberta alone. Prior to being involved with Bright Solutions, Ross co-founded Mission LED which is involved in the design, manufacture and importation of LED fixtures and bubs. Ross obtained a Commerce Degree from the University of Alberta and invested 14 years in the Pharmaceutical industry in a variety of Sales and Marketing Management roles.

She has been addressing groups for over twenty years on topics related to communications, humour, laughter, positive working skills and wellness in general. Brenda received her Bachelor of Arts from Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba (Major in English) and her Masters of Education from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. in 1998.

Art Sutherland is the President of Accent Refrigeration Systems of Victoria BC. Art graduated from the Nova Scotia Technical College with the highest marks in the province and an honors diploma in refrigeration technology in 1976. Art has developed and advanced many of the technologies that are commonly used throughout the recreational ice industry today with a primary focus on technologies that reduce and share energy. Art’s mechanical designs can be found on private, public, professional and Olympic Venues. John Tarantino is Vice President of Sales for Marmak. In 1983 John graduated from DeVry Institute of Technology and on June 27th 2002, was sworn in as an O.L.S., O.L.I.P. John has been the driving force in the creation of “The Municipal Partnership” which comprises of Canadian municipalities who have partnered to collaborate in the development and deployment of municipal solutions. In the past John has presented numerous papers at a number of provincial conferences including OGRA, ORFA, NSFRA, MISA, and URISA.. In partnership with both OGRA John is assisting numerous municipalities defining a successful road map to Municipal Asset Management.

Paula Thulin Paula is from Delta, BC and has worked in Aquatics for the past 23 years. During her career she has been an Aquatic Centre Supervisor for Delta, Red Cross Master Instructor Trainer and a Red Cross Water Safety Ambassador. Paula has worked on many committees over the years including the Lower Mainland Aquatic Program Development Meeting, Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer Recerts and the Red Cross Aquatic Programmer Course. Paula has also participated in the Red Cross China Water Safety initiative that brought the water safety message to two provinces in China.

Pat Zelenak
Pat Zelenak got his start in playgrounds in 1992 when he joined the community playground committee in Castle Downs. He quickly discovered that he had a talent and passion for designing and building playgrounds that kids love. He has been in the industry ever since and has worked in a variety of roles, everything from design and sales to installation. He has extensive experience working with parent and community groups and municipal departments. He is an expert at helping groups secure funding so they can maximize the play value in their playgrounds. Pat has traveled to a number of third world countries to volunteer to install refurbished playgrounds from the Alberta area. He has been volunteering in his community for the past 30 years. Pat was involved with the first CSA course offered in 1996 and has maintained his certification to this day, he has also become a certified Surface Impact Tester (Triax)
