Prior to the formation of Care Innovations, he served as Chief Technology Officer of the Intel Digital Health Group from 2005 to 2010 and served from 1999 to 2005 as Chief Information Officer for Intel Corporation. Doug has been an invited keynote speaker on healthcare topics at the Health Information Management Systems Society, the Partners Healthcare Research Symposium, Stanford University, Harvard University, California State University-Sacramento, and a speaker at many information technology and healthcare events.
 
Terry Carroll PhD

Terry Carroll is responsible for not only leading Fairview’s information technology and services organization, but also for facilitating transformation across Fairview by partnering with clinicians to achieve exceptional clinical outcomes, driving performance around key organizational goals and strategies, and supporting Fairview’s care model redesign. Carroll brings nearly 30 years of IT and executive management experience with health care providers specializing in health care and technology strategy. Over the years, he has helped the organizations he has led create value through technology, manage quality initiatives, optimize operations, and navigate complex technology environments. A native of New England, Carroll graduated from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, Vermont, with a bachelor’s degree in physics. He then went on to earn his master’s and doctorate degrees in biomedical engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
 
David Classen MD, MS
Associate Professor of Medicine

Dr Classen is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah and an Active Consultant in Infectious Diseases at The University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah, and he is also a Senior Partner at CSC. He received his medical degree from the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine and a Masters of Science degree in medical informatics from the University Of Utah School Of Medicine. He served as Chief Medical Resident at the University of Connecticut. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He was the chair of Intermountain Health Care’s Clinical Quality Committee for Drug Use and Evaluation and was the initial developer of patient safety research and patient safety programs at Intermountain Healthcare. In addition, he developed, implemented, and evaluated a computerized physician order entry program at LDS Hospital that significantly improved the safety of medication use. He was a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee (IOM) that developed the National Healthcare Quality Report and he was also a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee on Patient Safety Data Standards. He is currently a member of the Institute of Medicine Committee on Health Information Technology and Patient Safety. He chaired the QUIC (Federal Safety Taskforce)/IHI Collaborative on Improving Safety in High Hazard Areas. Dr Classen was co-chair of the Institute of Healthcare Improvements Collaborative on Perioperative Safety and the Surgical Safety Collaborative at the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI). He was also a faculty member of the IHI/National Health Foundation Safer Patients Initiative in the United Kingdom. In addition, Dr Classen is a developer of the “Trigger Tool Methodology” at IHI, used for the improved detection of adverse events, which is currently being used by more than 500 different healthcare organizations throughout the Unites States and Europe. Dr Classen also lead the development and publication of the new Compendium of Strategies for the Prevention Of Healthcare Associated Infections jointly released by the Infectious Disease Society of America, Society Of Healthcare Epidemiology, Joint Commission, American Hospital Association, and the Association Of Practitioners of Infection Control. He currently co-chairs the National Quality Forum’s Patient Safety Common Formats Committee and Dr. Classen is an advisor to the Leapfrog Group and has developed and implemented the CPOE/EHR flight simulator for the Leapfrog Group and National Quality Forum. This EMR Flight simulator has been used to evaluate hundreds of inpatient and ambulatory EMR systems after implementation across the United States and The United Kingdom.
 
Ken Coburn MD, MPH
CEO and Medical Director

Dr. Coburn is the CEO and Medical Director of Health Quality Partners (HQP), a not-for-profit health care quality research and development organization based in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. For the past 10 years, he has been the principal investigator for HQP’s Medicare Coordinated Care Demonstration (MCCD), which began enrolling chronically ill Medicare beneficiaries into a randomized controlled trial in April 2002. Prior to founding Health Quality Partners, Dr. Coburn served in leadership roles in PennCARE, an 11-hospital consortium in eastern Pennsylvania. Past experience also includes working within the disease management division of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, as the Medical Director for Quality at a HMO owned by academic medical centers in Philadelphia (Health Partners), and as the Director of the AIDS Center at the Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY, a New York State designated AIDS Center. Dr. Coburn received his undergraduate education at Brown University, his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, and completed his residency training in internal medicine at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in NY. He completed his infectious disease subspecialty training at the Albert Einstein/Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. He received his Masters in Public Health degree from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University and is currently a doctoral candidate in public health (DrPH) at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health where he was awarded the Arthur B. Holzworth endowed scholarship in health leadership.
 
John DiCola

John DiCola is Senior Vice President, Strategy and Business Development, for Catholic Health Initiatives. CHI is one of the largest Catholic health systems in the country, with diverse ministries serving 19 states and annual revenues exceeding $10 billion. John oversees the development and implementation of CHI’s strategic plan, growth strategies, and partnering efforts at national and market levels, and chairs the board of CHI’s Institute for Research and Innovation, responsible for sponsoring clinical research and health care delivery innovation across the system. John’s Strategy team is leading a system-wide approach to building accountable care capability at the market level, addressing care delivery system requirements, data management infrastructure, innovative care management models and new performance and population risk vehicles. CHI has a diverse portfolio of post acute assets, and as part of this accountable care effort, the team is developing standard frameworks for the post acute continuum, including post-acute network requirements and development standards, clinical integration models, and management infrastructure.
 
Mark Enger

Mark Enger joined the Kaiser Permanente Northwest senior leadership team on June 2, 2008, as vice president and chief operations officer. In this role, Mark is responsible for medical and dental patient care services. Most recently, Mark directed the graduate program in health care management at the University of Minnesota. Previously, he was with Fairview Health Services, based in Minneapolis. There, he served as president of Fairview Southdale Hospital, president of Fairview Ridge Hospital and Clinics, and senior vice president for business development. Prior to that, he was the hospital administrator for Lutheran Deaconess Hospital in Minneapolis. His accomplishments include national awards for operational and clinical quality. Mark holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Minnesota. He previously earned a Bachelor of Science degree in management from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
 
Preston Gee

Preston Gee is the Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning and Marketing for Trinity Health in Novi, Michigan. An integral part of his role at Trinity is to assess emerging trends and coordinate the organization’s long-range planning efforts. In response to the Affordable Care Act, Trinity launched an extensive planning initiative, Target 20/15, out of which emerged strategies for accountable care, clinical integration, and other core facets of health care reform. In addition to his work at Trinity, Gee is an author and industry thought leader on market-driven strategies for hospitals and health systems. He has written nine books, and has published numerous articles on planning and strategy for virtually every major publication in the health care industry. He has presented at national health care forums on a variety of topics, including a recent presentation on the emerging role of strategy and marketing in a post-reform, consumer-driven world. Gee started his career with The Quaker Oats Company in marketing and new product development. He holds BS and MBA degrees from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and is a past recipient of Modern Healthcare’s “Up and Comer’s Award.”

Robert M. Palmer, M.D., M.P.H., is Director of the Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he is also Professor of Medicine. Dr. Palmer attended medical school at the University of Michigan and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the Los Angeles County-University of Southern California Medical Center. He obtained a Master in Public Health degree at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he later completed a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Palmer has attained international attention for his research focused on improving the functional outcomes of hospitalization, patient safety, and quality of care. Dr. Palmer was Principal Investigator of a grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation that established the effectiveness of a medical unit for acute care of elders (ACE Unit). He was co-chair of the AMA-PCPI work group that created the Care Transition Measures. He is the author of numerous publications including research articles, geriatric textbooks, book chapters, and scientific reviews; and is Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Ms. Tomcavage earned her bachelor of science in nursing from Bloomsburg State University and her master of science in nursing from College Misericordia. Ms. Tomcavage has worked for over 20 years in the specialty of diabetes management, developing a comprehensive diabetes self-management education program and specialized care management programs for insulin pump therapy and high-risk pregnancy. She is responsible for the nationally recognized ProvenHealth Navigator® model at Geisinger; developing collaborative partnerships with providers to re-engineer care delivery.

She received her doctorate in Social Welfare Administration from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and her Master’s in Public Health from Yale University. She is the founding editor of the Journal of Social Work in Long-Term Care and edited the first text on culture change in long-term care.
