The 2013 ADVANCE Workshop will be held on March 3-5 in Alexandria, Virginia.

Workshop Summary

This is the 11th annual workshop for the National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE Program which strives to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse scientific workforce. Each year, ADVANCE Grant PIs and their team members gather in Washington, DC to discuss, present, network, and leverage knowledge.

Jane Karas- Keynote Speaker

Dr. Jane A. Karas became the 11th president of Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC) in Kalispell, Mont., on July 1, 2001. Dr. Karas began her service at FVCC as the vice-president/dean of instruction and student services beginning July 1999. Prior to FVCC, she served as gender equity coordinator, then as assistant commissioner for vocational technical education and later as director for workforce development for the Montana Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wellesley College and a Ph.D. in social policy from the Heller School at Brandeis University.

Dr. Karas has published numerous articles and has given presentations on education policy, economic development and workforce training.

Dr. Karas serves as chair elect of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Board of Directors. She also sits on the board of directors for Northwest Healthcare’s The HealthCenter, is a board member of Kalispell Daybreak Rotary and is a member of the Montana West Economic Development Board. In addition, Dr. Karas is past vice chair of the National Campus Compact Board Executive Committee, past chair of the Mountain States Association of Community Colleges and a past board member of Northwest Healthcare.

In May 2012, Dr. Karas represented AACC as a member of the U.S. Secretary of State’s delegation to China for the Higher Level People-to- People Exchange. She was honored with the 2009 Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Chief Executive Officer Award for the association’s Mountain Region and also is a recipient of the 2003 Montana Ambassadors Educator of the Year Award.

Mary Spilde- Keynote Speaker

Mary Spilde joined Lane in 1995 as Vice President for Instructional Services. In 1997, she became Vice President for Instruction and Student Services. Prior to that, she served 15 years at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Oregon, in a variety of positions including dean of business, health, and training. Mary served on the Oregon Workforce Quality Council for six years and the Oregon Workforce Investment Board for three years as well as serving on numerous local boards.

Mary earned a bachelor’s degree in business and social systems and a law degree from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. She completed her Masters Degree in adult education and her Ph.D. in post-secondary education at Oregon State University. Lane Community College is a League for Innovation in the Community College board college, and Mary currently serves as board chair.

Dr. Valerie Martin Conley- Keynote Speaker

Dr. Conley joined the faculty of Ohio University in 2002. She teaches courses on institutional research and assessment, management of higher education, and policy. She specializes in quantitative applications for educational policy and research drawing upon her experience as an institutional researcher and consultant to the National Center for Education Statistics. Her research interests focus on faculty retirement, part-time faculty, academic labor market and management issues.
