Designer and Creative Director Louis Paul Miller is a Communication Arts and Design graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University with eighteen plus years of brand, interactive, and traditional design experience. Prior to joining San Francisco design agency Character in 2012, Paul had designed and lead programs for such clients as Adidas, Smithsonian, Heath Ceramics, and Google, to name a few.

At Character Paul specializes in working on integrated brand, product, and service experiences for globally recognized brands such as Adobe and Logitech. In concert with developing brand and design strategies for his clients, his passion for tactical detail and the formal aspects of design keeps him hands-on busy with his love of identity, print, and packaging applications.

Outside of his commercial work, Paul continues to develop interdisciplinary design programs for various clients and publications. He is currently on the visitor experience sub-committee for the Museum of Science Fiction in Washington, DC — a museum in its inception phases due to open to the general public in 2017.

Packaging Ideation Through Concept

Tuesday, May 5 • 4:15 – 5:00pm

The Japanese have a word used to refer to the art of packaging. “Tsutsumi” means package, present, gift, and to envelop, to cover but also to hide, to keep secret. In this session, Ben Pham and Paul Miller will discuss how a packaging system — from structure to surface detailing — should signal as much about the brand as what's within.

3 Main Take-Aways:
  1. Drive ideation through concept, then function and form.
  2. Bring your client on the journey.
  3. Love your plan "B".
