Sessions

What I learned from design clients led to my "retirement"... and launched a whole new career

Thursday, May 7 • 4:15 – 5:00pm

Janine Vangool established her design business fresh out of art college. The freelance lifestyle and working for clients became an unexpected education in marketing, time management, and business development. After freelancing as a graphic designer in the arts, culture and publishing sectors for a dozen years, she “retired” from client work to reignite her creativity by launching UPPERCASE, a quarterly print magazine for the creative and curious.

In this session, she’ll trace her professional path and share what she learned from client work, the highs and lows of creative entrepreneurship, and the secrets to how she manages to produce a quarterly magazine as a solo entrepreneur.

3 Main Take-Aways:
  1. Turn frustrations and obstacles into your advantage.
  2. Keep motivated and inspired.
  3. Get a personal look inside making a magazine.
