David is an experienced designer with a background in storytelling. As executive creative director of experience design for mobile and social platforms at R/GA, David provides thought leadership on emerging technology and leads a variety of accounts. His particular interests include the use of mobile technology in retail settings and new product development. Prior to R/GA, David led Adobe’s ThinkTank, which explored trends, issues, and best practices in interactive design. Additionally, he has collaborated on projects with HUGE, Pentagram, Ogilvy’s Brand Integration Group, and AIGA. When he’s not designing interactions, he is writing about design and culture. David contributes articles to publications including Metropolis, Salon.com, The Guardian newspaper, and Cabinet magazine and is co-author of the book Becoming A Digital Designer. David has an MFA in fiction from the University of Virginia and was a Darmasiswa Scholar at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Design in the Age of the Invisible Interface

We're moving from scenarios where we navigate interfaces to seek out information, to one where information seeks us out based on our personal data and context. When designing for this new landscape, we really need to think user, context, and available data first, rather than device or format first. And the resulting documents look more like choreography than they do like traditional design artifacts.
