Heather McClure, Executive Director of Operations, Professional Liability & Risk, OU Physicians

Can you give us a short summary
of what your session on 'claims management will focus on?

The session will address best practices in managing claims that can be applied to all types: big/small, high reserve/low reserve, and complex/simple. It will also address how to take claims information and use it to drive a risk management program that will help avoid claims of the same type in the future.

What can your audience expect to gain from your session?
Our audience should leave the session with a checklist of best practices that they can take back to their organization to ensure that these items are being considered in their claims programs, or with recommendations that new process be added to ensure efficiency.

What are you looking forward to at this year's Captive Live USA?
I'm looking forward to meeting other captive industry professionals, and those who are interested in captives, as I truly believe in the philosophy that being deeply involved in managing one's own risk and claims programs is essential to the success of any busiess.

What are you hoping to achieve at this year's show?
I'm hoping not to only speak to others about ways captives can benefit their businesses, but learn from others about their programs. Networking with those in the industry is always a growth experience for me.

If you had not gone into risk management, what job would you be doing instead?
I would be an attorney in the health care field, working to protect patients and health care providers, which is very similar to what I do now through our captive-supported claims and risk operations.

What do you feel has been your biggest accomplishment?
I feel that my most recent position at the University of Oklahoma, building the captive structure and internal claims and risk programs from the ground up, was a huge accomplishment. After five years we saw huge improvement in outcomes and claims, which translated into a safer environment and financial savings as well. Now starting our ninth year our captive is funding things that help us build year afteryear on that success.

Richard Barrett, Treasury Manager, Rotary International

Can your give us a short summary of what your roundtable discussion on 'not for profit' will focus on?
I plan on tailoring the dicussion based on the needs of the participants. If most of the attendees are from non-profit healthcare systems, their needs will be very different from non-profit universities or membership organizations.

What can your audience expect to gain from your session?
They'll have the opportunity to hear from their peers how they're addressing similar situations and, hopefully, innovative solutions to common challenges.

What are you looking forward to at the year's Captive Live USA?
I'm looking forward to hearing from other organizations how they're addressing similar issues as well as some general industry updates.

If you had not gone into treasury management, what job would you be doing instead?
I probably would have one to law school and focused on arts and entertainment law.

What was your first job?
When I was 16, I got my very first job as a cashier at a local grocery store.

Paul Johnson, Director of Captive Operators, Verizon Communications Inc.

Can you give us a short summary of what your session on 'Exit Strategies' will focus on?
Andrew Rothseid, Principal of Runoff Re.Solve, and I will opine on our experience in executing the first (and only) Commutation Plan in accordance with Rhode Island's Chapter 27-14.5 "Voluntary Restructuring of Solvent Insurers." This is a transaction very much like the Solvent Scheme of Arrangement that are common -place in the UK and Bermuda.

What can your audience expect to gain from your session?
Knowledge of whether such a transaction is feasible for their book of business and what the critical success factors of executing such a plan are.

What are you looking forward to at this year's Captive live USA?
For me, networking with other captive owners is my main objective. Nothing like discussing challenges and initiatves  with captive owners in an informal setting.

What are you hoping to achieve at this year's show?
Making new contacts and finding out what the state-of-the-art is in maximising the value of a pure captive.

If you had not gone into risk management, what job would you be doing instead?
Probably would continue my career in international treasury.

If you had an extra hour each day, what would you do with it?
Read more of my Captive Review magazine.
