Description: Our soft furry friends make us laugh and bring contentment to our lives. Spend the day creating imaginative watercolor portraits of your special pet friends. No drawing skills needed! Just bring in images to trace onto a special watercolor rice paper. We'll paint with watercolors and create collage layers to portray fun, imaginative colors and perhaps an outfit and accessories! Pick up your pencils and learn how to add color changes and textures to the watercolor surface. Finish off the work with a special acrylic protective layer and varnish to seal the painting.
Students Should Bring: Color photo copies of your pets (head only)- print the images about an inch and a half (on each side) smaller than the size of the canvases you purchase. Also bring a couple of black and white copies- same size as the color copies. Description: Learn how to make this unique Metal Birdhouse Pendant from scratch. You will learn metal etching in a very simple way. The class also includes learning how to form metal into dome shapes,we cover how to use a small torch to solder the Birdhouse together and patinas to give it your own personal spin. This is a fun class make this your own unique Birdhouse.

You will leave with... a finished necklace and more cast and resin-filled bezels that can be turned into focal pendants later.
Description: Treasure hunters take heed. For those of you who love incorporating unique found objects into your mixed-media jewelry, this is a techniques-based workshop tailor-made for you. Rather than using your hard-won treasures in just one piece of art, learn how to easily make molds of your favorite objects using a non-toxic silicone molding putty and then how to make resin castings from your molds. Discover how to completely alter your resin castings with paint and patinas and transform them into entirely new components. If you are someone who thinks twice about using your precious objects, this workshop will have you seeing them in an entirely new light. Workshop attendees will leave with a finished necklace featuring a resin casting set into a bezel, along with chain and handmade clasp components.
Students Should Bring: Found objects. Smooth ones, flat ones, round ones, intricate detail, interesting texture ones, old doll parts, keys, shells, gears, buttons, etc. Look around your studio at interesting objects and bring them. The workshop is all about experimentation. Paint brushes, travel size baby wipes, 1 bottle of craft raw umber paint, 1 bottle of black paint. Also basic jewelry kit: round nose, flat nose and chain nose pliers. Bring a few beads and baubles from your stash to personalize your piece.

Description: Creating your own photographic images for your mixed media work doesn't have to be complicated, expensive, or require a lot of fancy equipment. Join mixed media artist Dea Fischer to learn how to use low technology methods to create your own images. You will have the opportunity to experiment with low-tech cameras, and cyanotype ('sun') printing with negatives and objects, and you will receive a kit to build your own pinhole camera at home. You will also explore fascinating image printing and transfer techniques that can be tricky to master effectively. You will practice making gel medium skins and transfers and heat transfers. You will leave the workshop with some finished images to use in your future mixed media work, some exposed films to process and your pinhole camera to build at home to further your mixed media experiments.
Students Should Bring: Negatives (medium or large format if you have them or know how to make them, but I will teach you); photocopies (not prints) of non-copyrighted or self-created material; soft gel acrylic medium ; 1" soft-bristle paint brush; an old spoon; interesting objects for cyanotype printing; shoes and clothes suitable for the weather.

Description: Oh how I love texture on metal! This workshop evolved from a happy accident, ever since I have been having a blast altering anything that I can get my hands on! In this workshop, you will learn an amazing technique for creating “etched” metal surfaces without having to deal with smelly and toxic chemicals & hours of agitation. After etching the metal in the morning, we will spend the rest of the day constructing a unique figurative sculpture using the metal that we altered. While working on the sculpture, we will also cover basic cold connection methods as well as composition & design. If you’d like, please bring some extra metal to etch, you can etch these in the morning & take them home to use in other projects. This technique will become a treasured favorite and will be useful in many other projects. You will leave with at least 1 figurative sculpture, 2 or more if you work fast & bring extra tins & heads!

Description: By doing a series of very small quilts, in different sizes, in class, you'll learn a number of fun ways to use a sewing machine to free-motion stitch. We'll use the machine like a pencil and doodle and draw on fabric while adding some paper and cheesecloth and anything else lying around that won't hurt the machine. At the end of class, you'll assemble what you've stitched, maybe adding a bit of colorant and some hand stitching, and you'll have created a nearly finished, totally original, art quilt. Jane will show you how to free-motion machine stitch like an artist.
Students Should Bring: fabric: small prints or solids that blend with each other (bring a selection of fat quarters or, your favorite scraps in pieces no smaller than 6 inches), Batting (~1 yard, we'll cut it up as we work) black or colored sewing machine thread that contrasts with your fabric, scissors, pins, glue stick or fusible webbing, interesting paper to include in the quilt (maps, book pages, pretty papers), simple, bold images (your own, or copyright free) to sew from, rotary cutter/ small mat (if you've got one), ruler. Description: This beautiful all-metal journal is reminiscent of old-time erector sets, and is as durable as it looks. It will be around for years after you fill it with your original artwork or writing. In this class, students will create a large (6" x 8" x 2") metal journal with copper plumber's tape and Thomas Ashman’s "new and improved" unique binding. Dozens of holes alternate with rusty hardware for a magnificent effect. You’ll completely fabricate the cover and spine of this book from totally raw materials and have just enough negative space to showcase some fancy paperwork! Add some chain and a few beads and charms, or bring your own found objects and such to attach to the covers to make this book uniquely your own. Techniques include cutting, torching, and alteration of metal with chemical patinas and a torch. Description: In this workshop students will learn about several ways to use the mineral Mica. The techniques of altering this amazing mineral makes it a perfect addition to many crafting projects. During the class students will construct a journal which they will incorporate pages of their altered mica. Although the finished Journal in itself will be quite a nice piece to leave with, it will be the knowledge students will acquire in the uses of mica that will be the true addition to their art world.

Description: Have you ever found yourself at sunset, watching stars appear in an indigo sky, imagining what else you could be? If you could travel across time and space, would you be a gypsy, sailor, naturalist, weaver, playwright, or hot air balloonist? What might you be? Where would you go? Upon our journal pages, we'll let our imagination float free and spin new stories. To get our creative juices flowing we'll start with a few creative writing exercises. We'll let our stories unfold with layers of fabric, paper or photos. You'll learn how to cut windows, make doors, add envelopes and attach pockets. We'll look at ways to change and fold the shape of the page. Next, with wild swooshes of colored paint, we'll celebrate our stories with joyful abandon. Learn new ways to incorporate collage, photos and other ephemera. Liesel Lund will demonstrate a variety of tricks for combining media from start to finish. You'll also receive a detailed handout to refer to when you get back home. Learn how to stay loose and keep the intuitive juices flowing. There are no rules, just joyous creating! For most of us who want to draw, our right side is often a little out of shape. In this class we learn tricks that allow us to draw exactly what we see. In the first hour you will see dramatic improvements and skill in your realistic drawing capacity. I promise you: ANYONE can draw realistically.

Description: Just imagine a day of warm sunshine, bright sandy beaches, sparkling aqua blue waters, colorful tropical fish and birds, and shady palm trees. With our watercolors and travel art journal in hand, we will spend a fun and relaxing day on our imaginary tropical paradise trip painting colorful warm scenes. You will learn fun techniques on how to keep your colors fresh and lively in order to capture scenes in your tropical paradise watercolor art journal. Jacqueline will also teach her watercolor techniques for painting colorful shadows, sparking whites, and rainbow borders. Rainbow borders add a great look to a journal page and are a perfect place to add journaling.
Students Should Bring: Watercolor paints, brushes and watercolor palette, Arches watercolor journal size 7" x 10" or loose Arches 140 lb watercolor paper (one ¼ sheet will give you enough paper for 4 small paintings), a drawing pencil and kneaded eraser, permanent black ink pen, water container, washcloth or rag. You will leave with... a uniquely constructed journal using vintage stock file folders and papers.
Description: A very unique approach to journaling and journal making, this workshop is more than just constructing a simple journal. We’ll start by making a 12” roll of paper from a collection of unusual papers including - Braille, ledger paper, maps, old blue prints, pages from hymnals and foreign language books, all of which will be provided (but feel free to bring your own to share or trade with classmates). This will all be glued and sewn together before it’s bound in a cover made from vintage stock File Folders (including metal tabs). We’ll put this all together with a simple binding method to complete this eclectic and very workable unique personal journal. We’ll talk about different ways of adding to and working in this journal and how to add beading to the spine.
Students Should Bring: Ruler, Elmer's glue, Scissors, A 1/2" flat brush, A few sheets of softly patterned black papers for edging (see sample photos), An assortment of papers you’d like to include or share/trade with others. Description: We all have wishes and dreams, come join me in constructing a special Art doll to protect and watch over them. Using dyes and paint we will create lush papers to turn into wish scrolls wrapped in string and lace. I will share with you simple but dramatic ways to alter wood in the process of changing a mass produced object into a unique piece of art. We will use sculpting and painting to animate the face of our Wish Keeper. I will be covering easy and effective construction and attachment techniques. Then we will pull the whole piece together with found objects, lace, beads, charms, and of course your wishes and dreams scrolls. That will be safely tucked into the birdcage skirt of your Wish Keeper. This is both a project and technique based class which you will leave with a unique piece of art as well as skills useful not just to art dolls but to other mixed media work as well.

Description: This class will give you skills to last a lifetime. You will learn to create a hard cover (also how to reuse old book covers), make and sew in signatures of high quality watercolor paper using a double Coptic stitch and we'll even sew on a leather spine. We use all sorts of fun tools and materials and you will be an expert with the dremmel by day’s end. This book is your new creativity companion so we will jump right in and begin to fill it. We take time at the end of the day to do your first drawings in the book with a lesson on having confidence with visual journaling. You will never have to buy a generic journal again.
Students Should Bring: A Xerox copy of a book cover of their choice (5”x7”) if they don't want an 'Oz' book cover. Their own awl and bone folder (I will have some available). Pencil, favorite drawing pen. I will have extra kits for sale.

Links, Clasps, Components and Chain (6 hours) • Jen Cushman

You will leave with... a finished necklace and a foundation to make your own components, which will save you money.
Description: One of the most rewarding aspects of making mixed-media jewelry is being able to see the hand of the artist in your work. Learning the skills to make gorgeous necklaces, bracelets, rings, pins and more from spools of humble wire is an art form all unto itself. Fortunately, making components from wire is not only deeply fulfilling, it's economical on your pocketbook and easier to accomplish than one might think. In this workshop, you will learn how to make bead links, wire links, clasps and components and then how to chain them together to create one seamless and beautiful wearable work of art. The fundamental skills learned in this class will help you build a strong foundation for future work.
Students Should Bring: At least 6 feet of 14 gauge dead soft copper wire, 3 feet of 16 gauge dead soft copper wire and 2 feet of 18 gauge dead soft copper wire. Do not buy craft wire that is copper coated. You can easily find this wire at any jewelry supply store or online jewelry supply store, such as Rio Grande or Fire Mountain Gems. If you have some experience in making jewelry and wireworking, you are welcome to bring dead soft sterling silver in the above gauges to make your links, clasps and components from. Also round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, wire snips, small steel bench block or anvil, ball peen hammer, pencil and sharpie marker. We are using the pencil and marker as a mandrel so don't worry if they write. Please be sure to bring jewelry pliers. Wire working cannot be done well with garage-type tools.

You will leave with... an understanding of two different marbling techniques and a number of finished marbled papers for use in further creative work.
Description: Don't let the intricacy and beauty of a marbled paper fool you. Those ripples of color may look hand-painted or machine-stamped, but they're actually created by liquid paint. Marbleizing, which involves using absorbent papers to pick up ink or paint from a water bath, dates to the twelfth century, when it was practiced in Japan and possibly China. Join Dea Fischer to make your own rich and vibrant designs by marbleizing paper to use in your mixed media projects.

But now rather than a standard binder we'll mount these custom made (to my specifications) binder mechanisms in an old hard bound book cover (that was surely destined for the landfill). You are provided with enough entomology collage imagery to make a multitude of journals pages and add on collage packs will be available. Description: Turn your eye for design into fabulous and unique jewelry. During class we will use handcrafted bezels, oodles of images, a jeweler's-grade resin and the most important tool of all—your imagination—to make a trio of resin pendants. Learn how to properly mix and pour a two-part epoxy resin, add color if you so choose, embed small objects like rhinestones or beads and how to bling it up with glitter and mica. These images are idea samples of what you can create, but you will personalize your pendant to fit your individual art aesthetic, style and favorite color palettes.
Students Should Bring: Scissors, a medium sized paint brush for adding sealer medium, non stick craft mat if you have one, small pack of travel wipes. If you wish to 100% personalize your resin charms, you can bring your own images printed on color copies (toner-based, not ink-jet) and scaled down to jewelry size and any small items from your art stash that you would like to embed, such as flat-backed charms, rhinestones, pearls, small buttons, dried flowers etc. If you check your local scrapbooking store, it's usually a wealth of small flat-backed embellishments that are perfect for embedding into resin.

Description: Let your imagination take hold and play with colored pencils on a unique black and red surfaces. Light colors will glow and textures pop when pencils glide over the surface. You’ll learn about blending methods and layering colors. I’ll start you out with a collage prompt poem concept that will indicate the imagery. Don’t worry about drawing abilities. This is about learning to see, blending colors and layering to create depth and saturation of color. Giving permission to yourself to create is the first step.

Description: This little book is a beautiful union of form and function. Copper, wire, paper, and glass come elegantly together in this charming little book that is sure to become a treasured keepsake, especially once it is filled with your art and writing. Construct a new and improved version of Thomas Ashman’s original all-metal binding and two 4" beveled glass squares. Fill it with some nice watercolor paper, and it is perfect for writing, art journaling, scrapbooking, whatever! You’ll fabricate the glass and metal book completely "from scratch" and embellish with chain, beads, charms, and pretty photo images. This unique binding, once mastered, can be adapted to many other materials such as found tin, sheet metal, stained glass, and much more! Two transparencies of vintage photos are included, but you are invited to bring a personalized image for the covers. Just print out any 2 photos you like on transparency film at 4.25" sq. but do not trim them yet. You will leave with... an altered book begun and progressed in the workshop, along with an understanding of the principles of altering books, from selecting and preparing a book for altering to a variety of altering techniques for transforming an old book into a journal or a work of art.
Description: Altered books is an art form in which existing books are reworked into works of art. The existing book becomes the canvas for the new ideas and images, and is a wonderful alternative for art journaling. We will learn everything from selecting and preparing a book for altering to a variety of altering techniques for transforming an old book into a journal or a work of art.
Students Should Bring: 1.One or more hard cover books of at least 50 pages, in sound condition; 2.A favorite short poem, quotation or piece of writing to incorporate into one of the altered books; 3.A good pair of sharp scissors; 4.A bonefolder. They are available in various sizes and materials, but a 6" to 8" folder made of cow bone is preferable; 5.A craft knife with extra blades; 6.A metal, or metal-edged, ruler, 12" or longer; 7.A large UHU glue stick (UHU brand is preferable for performance, and is archival); 8. Soft gel medium; 9.A small cutting mat or piece of strong cardboard to cut on; 10.Any papers or embellishments you might like to use. Feel free to bring any additional tools you regularly use for measuring, cutting and bookbinding. Please also feel free to bring your own selection of stamps, inks, paints, pastels or other materials you might like to use for decoration or embellishment.

Description: This is a Steampunk Clock that we will be designing using found objects. This clock is constructed using a quartz battery-operated clock movement. Wood laser cut gears of original design are the base for this clock. Included in this clock are found objects (such as lightbulbs, scissors, old knobs, etc.), original clock parts along with other repurposed materials. You will learn the basic construction of EK Original Steampunk Clocks along with balance and dimension. This clock will be able to be wall hung or set on a desk or table.
Students Should Bring: Eye protection, bent nose pliers, chain nose pliers, Round nose pliers, Flat nose pliers, old wire cutters, apron, rag, Any small found objects measuring 3" or less that the student may want to incorporate into their clock.

Description: Get the exquisite look of cast silver by using readily available and inexpensive, silver-bearing lead-free solder! Heated to a molten stage, the solder can be easily stamped and takes on the look of cast silver. In this three-hour workshop, you will use a wood-backed rubber stamp to create a “cast silver” component. After riveting your solder stamping onto a metal backdrop, you'll create a gorgeous mixed-metal baled pendant. Wire stitching, metal dimpling, corrugating, bale making, and riveting will also be covered in Mixed Metal Magic.
Students Should Bring: Students may wish to bring a favorite riveting hammer and/or wood-backed red rubber stamps, apron, flux, brush, lead-free silver-bearing solder. I will provide hammer, stamps, flux, brushes, and solder.

I will set up a simple still life; you will take a photo of that and use that photo as the base of your drawing. You will leave with... a journal created from unconventional materials that is sure to elicit wonder. An array of tips and techniques will be covered that are not only diverse but also applicable to a broad range of mediums.
Description: Capturing the moments of our journey is perfect when done so on upcycled materials. In class we will transform ordinary plastic cereal bags, shopping bags and plexi-glass into a conglomeration of beauty you will simply marvel at when you see it. Layers of white gesso, threads, paper and virtually any ephemera you wish you to add creates not only a masterpiece of sorts but a collection of tales. Join me as I share a few tricks and tips on turning those glassine bags and white shopping sacks into the perfect journal. This project is truly all about thinking outside of the box; cereal box that is. The glassine nature of cereal bags (as well as other bags used to house food), is such a delightful canvas. During our time together I will not only walk you through the process of constructing these lovely journals, but offering a bounty of techniques and tips when it comes to stitching, layering, painting and writing within the journals. Perhaps the coup de grace is the soldered charms we will be creating to use within our journals as each will be a true signature piece that speaks volumes as to who we are as artists.
