JUMPSTART:
     Gift Planning Fundamentals

Tuesday, October 14, 1:00 - 5:00 pm
Additional fee required: $195 if registered on or before August 18, $245 after August 18
Approved for 4.0 hours of CFP Continuing Education Credit

If you're new to charitable planning, this session introduces terms and concepts, with clear explanation of both basic and advanced tools and strategies. During his 30+ years in the field, Craig Wruck has trained, mentored and supervised hundreds of gift planners. As an experienced member of the NCPP faculty, he understands what you need to know to get the most from your time at the conference. JUMPSTART attendees all receive a copy of Craig's book, Planned Giving in a Nutshell, a practical guide to charitable planning for fundraisers and volunteers who aren't experts. You'll leave JUMPSTART with new colleagues and the confidence to learn, both in sessions and in the hallways as you talk with other attendees.
Learning Objectives:
  • Learn about assets that are frequently used in charitable planning, and consider ways to help your donors and clients make gifts with greater impact.
  • Understand how common "planned" gift vehicles work, and how they can be used as part of broader estate, financial and family plans.
  • Consider whether your own donor or client base is likely to include people who are prospects for planned or blended gifts.

Growing from Success to Significance
in Modern Philanthropy

Kathy LeMay, Founder, President & CEO

Raising Change

Kathy LeMay was galvanized to social action at the age of 23, when she traveled to Bosnia and Herzegovina to volunteer in a refugee camp where women and children were surviving genocide. She returned to the U.S. determined to continue helping them. “I knew then,” she writes, “that I would have to learn to raise big money really well.” She has indeed raised big money. As a “social justice wealth redistributor,” she has channeled more than $150 million to the fields of women's human rights, hunger and poverty relief, HIV/AIDS, and movement building. She is founder, president and CEO of Raising Change, which helps organizations raise capital to advance social change agendas. She is also a philanthropist who personally supports organizations working to make a difference. LeMay serves as an adviser and consultant to Fortune 100 companies, universities, international NGOs and the United Nations. She is a sought-after speaker on strategies for social justice and empowering women to come into their voice.

You’ll want to hear Kathy because…

  • She prefers the term “generosity plan” to “philanthropy,” and she talks to people of all wealth levels about harnessing their passions and contributing time, talent and financial resources in a very focused way. For Kathy, there’s nothing dry about planning—it comes from the heart.
  • She knows how to dig deep to connect each person’s giving to his or her own experience of generosity, tapping into the most genuine motivation to pay it forward.
  • Her metric for success is empathy, and not the bottom line: Empower yourself, so you can empower others. Kathy’s current work focuses on strategies for keeping humanity at the forefront of the philanthropic movement.

Stalemate: A Living Case Study

Wednesday, October 15
5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Fundraisers and advisors need to be able to talk comfortably about wealth, and how to use it effectively, especially when they encounter personal and family issues involving identity, status, legacy, communication and interpersonal dynamics. Do you have the emotional intelligence and the financial savvy to help create a positive outcome? In this video presentation of a living case study from Shaking the Tree
, you’ll see what happens at the planning table when a well educated third generation grandson attempts to become more active in a family’s philanthropic activities, causing old and new ideas on governance and grant making to clash. With the help of an expert facilitator, you will explore challenges of appropriately incorporating younger family members into the decision making process for a family philanthropy and its mission.

You should attend if...
  • You need to deepen your understanding of such emotional issues as family-business succession, corporate governance in family enterprises, trustee/beneficiary relations, family decision-making, and the responsibility of inherited wealth, including philanthropy.
  • You are eager to discuss the impact of choices made and actions taken by wealthy individuals and families with fundraisers and advisors who have worked with high net worth philanthropists.
  • You would like a safe space to evaluate responses to the problems and opportunities raised by NextGen philanthropists.

The evening includes hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. It will end at 7:00 pm, so attendees have time to enjoy dinner on their own at one of many excellent Anaheim restaurants.

To see one of the IGNITE! talkers from the 2013 National Conference on Philanthropic Planning, click here. Ten to twelve attendees at the 2014 National Conference on Philanthropic Planning will be selected to present IGNITE! talks during a morning plenary session on Thursday, October 16. The theme for this year's IGNITE! plenary is "Most Meaningful." We're looking for talks that convey people, experiences and/or ideas that have been inspiring - even transformative - for the presenter. Talks don't have to be directly related to philanthropic planning, but they could be. If you'd like to share your most meaningful story as one of our IGNITE! talkers, click here. Each IGNITE! presenter who is registered for the full conference will receive a $100 discount on the registration fee.
