About HOW Interactive Design Conference

Why was the HOW Interactive Design Conference created?
Most web design events emphasize programming and coding rather than design, but as user interface becomes more sophisticated and user experience more important we thought the market needed a web design conference focusing specifically on design and design process.

Who created the HOW Interactive Design Conference program?
The program has been created by designers who are well respected experts in their respective disciplines and practitioners of their craft. We thought it was essential that our advisory board reflect our audience – designers who actively work with clients. This enables us to provide you with material that addresses your daily challenges as well as take complex ideas and concepts and make them understandable and accessible.

What makes the HOW Interactive Design Conference program unique?
First and foremost it is the emphasis on design, the design process and design tools. That is THE key distinction between HIDC and other web design events. Plus we weave into the program discussion about the relationship between good web design and effective marketing. That is a topic that is rarely, if ever, discussed at other web design events, but reflects the bulk of work being done by you and other designers.

Why should I attend How Interactive Design Conference?
HIDC is the only web design conference focusing specifically on design, the design process and design tools. Our program and our speakers will provide practical, actionable and understandable information on web design that will help you build and develop a skill set that which will enable you to advance your design career. Plus it is being produced by the same people who produce HOW Design Live, the design industry’s premiere event, meaning the same standard of excellence we deliver at HOW Design Live will be delivered at HIDC.

The HOW Interactive Design Conference Advisory Board is an elite team of well-respected design experts selected each year to help shape the direction of the HIDC program. This year’s Advisory Board members are:

Chris Butler, Program Director
As Chief Operating Officer for Newfangled, he spends much of his time managing the people and systems that keep Newfangled producing web platforms for independent agencies. But an even greater portion of his time is spent sharing what he’s learned about the web, interactive design and digital marketing topics, making Chris the obvious choice to lead HIDC’s 2014 programming strategy.

Karen McGrane
The Managing Partner at Bond Art + Science explains her job like this: “I tell companies how to fix what they’re doing wrong on the internet.” She’s written and presented extensively about mobile and responsive design, as well as the history of interactive design and content strategy.

Cameron Moll
Cameron’s eclectic background includes his letterpress artwork of structures designed entirely with type, as well as his founding of AuthenticJobs.com, where companies and creative professionals meet to make a better web. The wide span of Cameron’s expertise reflects his conviction that you can create with any medium and on any canvas.

David Sherwin
David’s mission is to “help people unlock their potential through design.” He accomplishes that goal in spades, through his position as Interaction Design Director at frog, his books and toolkits combining design creativity and business acumen, and his mentoring of designer-led startups for The Designer Fund. David’s expertise spans UX design, information architecture and much more.

Together with the Advisory Board, HOW has assembled a program that delves into subjects like responsive design, content strategy, cross-platform design and more, with a focus on preparing you to put this new knowledge to work. It’s a delicate balance we’ve worked hard to strike with a program that will inspire, inform and prepare.

The conference’s expert speakers—all current practitioners actively working with clients—will present a thoughtfully curated mix of theory and practice designed to give you a solid foundation in web design principles, as well as real-world strategies you’ll use to solve design problems as soon as you get back to work.
