Star Athena
Star Athena has contributed both articles and patterns to a number of places in print and online, including Vogue Knitting, Knitscene, Spin Off, Interweave Knits, Knitty, and more. In addition to teaching at yarn shops and events like Sock Summit, in 2007 she was a guest on DIY Network’s knitting TV show Knitty Gritty. She started the annual online spin-along The Tour de Fleece in 2006 to spin yarn along with the Tour de France. When not designing, she’s dreaming about designing or knitting, spinning, dying fiber, teaching, cycling, writing, doodling, walking, doing crossword puzzles, drinking tea, eating chocolate, stretching, contemplating the mystery of existence, and exploring the great Pacific Northwest.
 
Josh Bennett
Josh Bennett grew up in Pennsylvania where he learned to knit from his grandmother when he was 8 years old. After moving to New York City in 2001 and knitting constantly for a couple of years, Josh worked at a yarn store on the Upper West Side that wrote custom patterns for its customers. Noticing the lack of menswear patterns being published, he took his pattern writing skills and set out to change that. He managed a couple of yarn shops in the city, honing his pattern-writing skills and building a private clientele that he still designs, knits, and writes patterns for.
 
He now designs the knitwear for Project Runway winner Irina Shabayeva, CFDA Award winner Michael Bastian, and GANT by Michael Bastian. His original designs can be seen in Rowan Magazine, Vogue Knitting, Knit Simple, Knit.1, and Knit Local by Tanis Gray. He has taught at Vogue Knitting LIVE NYC & LA, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and countless yarns shops. Josh has a degree in Menswear Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).

Debbie Bliss
Debbie Bliss has been designing knitwear for more than two decades. She is the bestselling author of more than 30 books on knitting design and has her own line of luxurious yarns, sold worldwide. She designed a line for Baby Gap and a line of little boys’ wear for Marks & Spencer. In 2008 Debbie launched her own publication, Debbie Bliss magazine. John Brinegar has been involved with fiber arts since age 17. Laura Bryant
Laura Bryant is founder and creative director of Prism Yarns. She has written 5 books, including The Yarn Stash Workbook and The New Knitter’s Template (with Barry Klein). She is well known for her color expertise and innovative approach to garment shape, developed through years as a working artist. Laura has published designs and articles in many magazines, including Vogue Knitting and Knit Simple, and has published over 70 booklets for Prism.
 
Nancy Bush
Nancy Bush found her way to traditional knitting techniques and uses of ethnic patterns via a degree in art history and postgraduate studies in color design and weaving in San Francisco and Sweden. She has published articles and designs in Vogue Knitting, Knitter’s, Interweave Knits, and Threads. She has been the knitting contributor to PieceWork magazine and is currently a member of the editorial advisory panel. She teaches workshops in the United States and abroad and is the author of Folk Socks, Folk Knitting in Estonia, Knitting on the Road, Socks for the Traveling Knitter, Knitting Vintage Socks, and Knitted Lace of Estonia: Techniques, Patterns, and Traditions, all published by Interweave Press.
 
Connie Chang Chinchio
Connie came upon knitwear design as a way to relax and unwind from her days working as a postdoc in physics. Somehow, what began as a hobby has since consumed her life, turning into a full-time profession, relegating everything else into a hobby. She hopes one day to find a good balance between the two, but for now, she works as a credit risk consultant by day and at night is a sweater knitter. She has been published in Interweave Knits, Knitscene, Knit.1, and Twist Collective. Her first book, Textured Stitches, was published by Interweave Press in 2011.
 
Lily Chin
Lily M. Chin is an internationally famous knitter and crocheter who has worked in the yarn industry for more than 25 years as a designer, instructor, and author of books on knitting and crochet. She has created garments for the collections of designers from Ralph Lauren to Diane von Furstenberg. Her work has been on the backs of celebrities and super models. She was named a “Master Knitter” by Vogue Knitting. She is regularly cited in media across the US, include the Late Show with David Letterman, CNN, the New York Times and more. Lily Chin has lived in New York City all her life and has been involved in some aspect of the fashion industry since age 13.
 
Katharine Cobey
Katharine Cobey is one of a new group of American sculptural knitters. Her pieces, such as the thirty-foot Boat with Four Figures, and Loose Ends, a wedding dress knit from white kitchen bags, have been shown in museums from Anchorage to Maine and demonstrate that knitting can be fine art as well as fine craft. She is a passionate, patient, and generous teacher, sharing the results of fifty years of exploring how classic knitting techniques can work sculpturally. Her teaching encourages knitters at all levels of expertise to plan and make their own designs In 2010 Schoolhouse Press published her book, Diagonal Knitting, immediately hailed in Vogue Knitting as a “timeless volume knitters will consult for years to come.”
 
Lisa Daehlin
Lisa Daehlin is a knitting designer and opera chanteuse. She teaches in venues including the Studio Arts Workshop at Newark Museum, PS122 Gallery, and the American Folk Art Museum. A continuing education faculty member at The Cooper Union for seven years, she has the distinction of having been the first teacher of knitting and crochet courses at this historic institution. A sought-after designer of knitted and crocheted fabrics and objects, she freelances for the fashion industry and retail design. Teaching knitting and helping people learn about their knitting options is something Amy is passionate about; she loves helping people solve problems.

Rosemary Drysdale is a designer and teacher of knitting and embroidery. While growing up in Northern England she learned to knit socks at age 7 and was introduced to embroidery by her grandmother. Rosemary studied textile science in college, earning a distinction in needlework studies. After relocating to the US in her early twenties, she has enjoyed a decade-spanning career as an embroidery and knitting teacher and designer at Pratt Institute and FIT in New York. She’s traveled the world lecturing and promoting her publications. More recently, she was a yarn store owner and is currently Knitting Editor at Vogue Knitting and Knit Simple magazines; she is also a consultant and designer in the yarn industry. Rosemary's latest book, Entrelac (Sixth&Spring Books), was published in November 2010.
 
Ragga Eiriksdottir
Ragga is an Icelandic knitting instructor, designer, and entrepreneur. After earning a university degree in nursing and spending 10 years in sales and marketing, she decided it was time to let creativity take over and invest all her time and energy on projects related to knitting. She now owns and operates knittingiceland.is and works full time as an instructor, designer, and knitting tour guide. Ragga's firm belief is that knowledge liberates the knitter. That's why she loves to motivate and enable knitters to think outside the charts and beyond the patterns. Ragga's sound knowledge of knitting techniques and laid-back teaching style has earned her a reputation as a wacky, wonderful, and wise instructor.
 
Candace Eisner Strick
Candace Eisner Strick has been immersed in music and knitting for most of her life. Retired after sixteen years of teaching cello, she now concentrates on desiging, writing, and teaching knitting. Her newest book, Strick-ly Socks, features a revolutionary and amazingly simple way of knitting socks. She is the author of six other books, has been published in numerous magazines, and has taught nationally and internationally since 1998. Fiona Ellis
Since graduating from DeMontfort University (England) with a degree in fashion knitwear design, Fiona has been designing professionally. Her work is much sought after, with sustained exposure in leading magazine publications such as Vogue Knitting and online at Twist Collective. She also designs for many yarn companies such as Universal Yarn and Cascade Yarns. Her original concepts have been purchased by major fashion houses in London, Paris, and New York, and she has many requests for personal appearances and workshop instruction at international conferences and guilds. She is the author of Inspired Cable Knits, Knitspiration Journal, and Inspired Fair Isle Knits.
 
Nicky Epstein
Beloved knitwear designer Nicky Epstein has gained worldwide recognition for her abundant creativity, groundbreaking sense of style, and informative workshops. She has authored numerous books, including Cover Up with Nicky Epstein, Nicky Epstein’s Crocheted Flowers, Nicky Epstein’s Knitted Flowers, Knitting Never Felt Better: The Definitive Guide to Fabulous Felting, Knitting Beyond the Edge, Knitting Over the Edge, Knitting on the Edge and Knits for Barbie™ Doll. Since she was little, Louisa has always made clothes. She studied Textiles for Fashion at Brighton University, where during her third year she worked at Rowan Yarns, who published two of her very early designs in Rowan Magazine No. 6. She worked as an in-house designer for Rowan for 11 years. Since having children, she has worked alongside her husband, Stephen, a photographer, to create the Miss Bea series of knitting books, inspired by their children, Belle and Oscar. In 2005 she was very fortunate to be given the opportunity of introducing her own line of yarns and pattern publications. She is thoroughly enjoying the creative experience, playing with color and texture and designing beautiful knitwear patterns.
 
Sivia Harding
Sivia Harding is known for her exceptional beaded knits. Her work can be seen online on Ravelry, Patternfish, Twist Collective, Knitty, and her website at www.siviaharding.com. Her published work can be found in many books, print magazines, subscription clubs, and self-published patterns. She has been designing professionally since 2003.
 
June Hemmons Hiatt
June Hemmons Hiatt took the knitting world by surprise in 1989 with the release of her book, The Principles of Knitting. A lifelong knitter, she spent ten years researching and writing a book that was soon recognized as providing knitters with a new in-depth understanding of their craft. Unfortunately, the publisher failed to appreciate how important the book had become and let it go out of print. In the ensuing years, the book has regularly been on the lists of the most sought after out-of-print books, selling on eBay for $400–600 or more a copy. June undertook another ten-year effort to revise and expand the book, and Simon & Schuster, having recognized its significance, will publish a new edition with a fresh new design in November 2011.

Stefanie Japel learned to knit more than 30 years ago from her grandmother and has been designing knitwear for publication since her first pattern, the Postmodern Legwarmers, appeared in Knitty in 2003. Since then, she’s written three books and her work has appeared on television, in books, magazines, and on the web. She loves to teach in-person workshops, and also teaches classes on Craftsy.com.
 
Vedis Jonsdottir
Vedis grew up on a farm in Iceland. As child she learned to knit and care for the sheep, then she studied fashion design at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen, Denmark and started working as a knitwear designer for ready-to-wear. Later she began designing hand knits, revitalizing the Icelandic Lopi sweater by introducing new shapes and more intricate color combinations. She designs yarn colors for Ístex and has twice received the Pamela Sanders Brement grant to study at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, working with sculptural knitting and embroidery.
 
Barry Klein
Barry learned to knit at his family knitting store, where every sweater was designed with custom instructions. His love of design and love of knitting comes through in the yarns he designs for his company. Barry believes in “letting the yarn do the work” and follows through with this concept in the classes that he teaches. It is all about the yarn, the properties of the yarn, and what can be done with it to ensure proper fit and a true love of what you just knit. Melissa Leapman
A popular teacher and prolific designer, Melissa Leapman is the author of several bestselling knitting and crocheting books. Her most recent titles are Mastering Color Knitting and Stashbuster Knits (Potter Craft), as well as numerous publications and DVDs from Leisure Arts. Her next book is due out in the fall of 2012.

Catherine Lowe is known for her original and unique construction techniques and her pairing of luxury fiber with elegant design. Patty Lyons
Patty Lyons gave up her life as a Broadway stage manager eight years ago to make her passion her career, when she went to work in the knitting world full time. After managing a local yarn store, in 2008 she was hired by Lion Brand Yarn as the Studio Director to help create the Lion Brand Yarn Studio. A certified knitting instructor, Patty focuses on helping her students see the “why to” not just the “how to.” Patty currently teaches more than 30 of the Studio’s 150 workshops and also enjoys teaching at guilds around the country and shows such as Vogue Knitting LIVE and Knit 1 Crochet 2. She runs the Studio’s education department, overseeing eight staff teachers and a full lineup of master class teachers.
 
Trisha Malcolm
Trisha Malcolm’s life in needle crafts began at the age of 4 and has spanned summers knitting, sewing, crocheting, and embroidering at the beach, months backpacking around the world, and academic years as a high school needlework teacher. An editorship at McCalls Needlework and Craft magazine led to a career in craft publishing, including her time as the Craft Editor at Family Circle Magazine Australia and other publications before she took over the helm of Vogue Knitting in 1997. Her role at the company has expanded in the ensuing years, to encompass Knit Simple magazine, a book publishing division (publisher of the Stitchionary series, Knitopedia, and more), custom publishing, and stitching-themed events. Trisha lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her son.
 
Nancy Marchant
Nancy Marchant was born in Indiana but now lives and works as a graphic designer in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She has written articles for Vogue Knitting, Interweave Knits, and Knitters, as well as a number of Dutch knitting magazines and is the author of Knitting Brioche, the first and only knitting book devoted exclusively to the brioche stitch. She maintains a website on the subject at www.briochestitch.com and teaches brioche knitting both locally and at large yarn shows.
 
Joan McGowan-Michael
Joan McGowan-Michael has been a professional fashion designer for more than twenty-five years, styling garments for retailers as diverse as Frederick’s of Hollywood and JC Penney. She founded her company, White Lies Designs.com, in 2001. It has since become the original go-to resource for lingerie patterns for hand knitting and other romantic, vintage inspired knitwear styles. The thread that runs through all of her work is the celebration of romance and the feminine form. She believes that all women are beautiful and strives to help enhance that beauty through the clothing she designs. All of her styles are available in a wide range of sizes from petite to plus.
 
Sally Melville
Sally Melville has published 6 books, and each is full of the kind of mostly simple, wearable pieces she loves to design. In addition, she has an extensive teaching schedule, traveling around the world and speaking to wonderful folk who can appreciate the perfect buttonhole, who love the textures and colors and techniques of knitting, who want to be more intuitive about their craft, and who know that life is about learning.
 
Jean Moss
Designer, author, and teacher, Jean Moss is known for innovative combinations of textures, colorways, and styling. A self-taught knitter producing unique collections of hand knits for many years, Jean’s clients have included Polo Ralph Lauren, Laura Ashley, and Benetton, among others. Her designs are featured regularly in UK and US publications and for six years she wrote “Ask Jean” in the UK magazine Knitting. An ardent maker of music, gardens, food, and knits, Jean believes good design should be available to all, not just the few who can afford to buy couture. Jean and partner Philip Mercer host regular knitting and garden tours in the UK, which have become so successful that they are now offering more exotic places like Morocco.
 
Laura Nelkin
Laura Nelkin lives in upstate New York, where the sunny season is short and there is plenty of time to be indoors and knit. Though she has a degree in apparel design, she took to knitting 7 years ago and hasn’t looked back. Laura is currently enamored with lace, and incorporating beads into it, so most of her designs lean in this direction. She also has a passion for knitted jewelry and has been exploring creating wearable pieces. Laura travels often to teach these techniques and more at workshops around the country. When Laura is not designing or knitting, she is whipping up yummy feasts with her family, gardening, riding her bike, and taking time to play!
 
Deborah Newton
For more than 25 years, Deborah Newton has designed for all the major craft and knitting magazines, for yarn companies, and for Seventh Avenue. She is the author of numerous books, including Designing Knitwear, which has been in continuous print for more than 20 years, and her latest, Finishing School. She lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island.
 
Brooke Nico
Brooke Nico began designing by sewing her own wardrobe, inspired by drape and color. She brought her talents to knitting almost ten years ago, first exploring modular construct then lace. Next, Brooke opened Kirkwood Knittery, a yarn shop in St. Louis. Brooke’s designs have been featured in several magazines, including Vogue Knitting and Debbie Bliss magazine. As a dedicated teacher, Brooke guides knitters through the intricacies of techniques to make their projects as polished as possible.
 
Shirley Paden
As an internationally recognized hand-knitwear designer, Shirley Paden’s designs and articles have appeared in magazines such as Vogue Knitting, Interweave Knits, Interweave Crochet, Knitters, Family Circle, and Knit It as well as in the collections of leading yarn companies. She has taught and lectured on various aspects of hand knitting and crochet locally, nationally, and internationally. In her book, Knitwear Design Workshop, she brings to life in print her most popular class, Knitwear Design, for all those who want to explore designing their own garments or altering commercial patterns. Shirley has been featured on HGTV and Knitting Daily TV as well as in designer interviews in the leading knitting magazines. Judy Pascale
Judy Pascale, a native of Connecticut, launched her career as a professional knitting instructor and designer in the early 1990s. After several years employed at a yarn shop teaching knitting classes and assisting numerous customers with their knitting and finishing problems, she is now exclusively teaching knitting and design classes. The second phase of Judy’s designer career combined knitting with beads. Using a non-prestringing technique and textured stitches, she has designed classes from small projects to garments. Her most recent phase is wet felting. This ancient textile process remains vibrant and fascinating today, as either a Nuno scarf to wear or a decorative table runner or bowl to decorate your home. Creativity is endless.
 
Mari Lynn Patrick
Mari Lynn Patrick has worked exclusively as a professional writer and designer in the hand-knitting and yarn industry since 1973. With thousands of designs in both knit and crochet in print, she has also written or translated more than 10,000 sized patterns from foreign languages, primarily in women’s fashion knitting and crochet. While working as the design editor for Caron/Columbia Minerva in the early 1970s, she designed leaflets for the company that sold more than 1 million copies. She has been actively involved with Vogue Knitting magazine since its reintroduction in 1982, both as a designer, instruction writer and editor, and writer of technical articles.

Iris Schreier

Carla Scott
Carla Scott is currently editor in chief of Knit Simple magazine and executive editor of Vogue Knitting magazine. She has been working with Vogue Knitting since 1982 and has enjoyed hosting the VK Tours for the past 10 years. She created and edited the Vogue Knitting Stitchionary book series and is closely involved in the various knitting books published by Sixth&Spring Books. A knitter since the age of 7, Carla has had a career in the hand-knitting industry spanning more than 30 years, working for various yarn companies, knitting magazines, and book publishers in New York City. Carla lives in Manhattan with her husband and daughter (who is also a knitter).
 
Leslye Solomon
Having taught more than 20 years of sold-out classes at national and international seminars, Leslye Solomon is an enthusiastic, energetic, and empathetic teacher. Her classes include comprehensive sweater designing, hands-on sweater finishing, and easy-to-learn (or switch to) continental knitting. Leslye has published a number of sweater designs and editorials, and she has produced numerous instructional DVDs. Debbie is the author of the New York Times–bestselling Stitch ’n Bitch series of knitting and crocheting books. She is also the Editor in Chief of BUST Magazine. Debbie began knitting when she was only 6 years old, but it took 30 years before she actually learned to enjoy it. Once she became obsessed, in 1999, she started a Stitch ’n Bitch group in a cafe in NYC’s Lower East Side, and it became the inspiration for thousands of Stitch ’n Bitch groups that have formed all across the country in the years since. She has written 5 books in the Stitch ’n Bitch series and has her own line of yarn, Stitch Nation by Debbie Stoller. She lives in Brooklyn with one crazy cat, 2 weird dogs, and way too much yarn.
 
Martin Storey
Martin was born in Hull, England, and raised on a pig farm on the East Yorkshire coast. During his time at the local village school he came under the influence of teacher Mrs. Cross, who taught him to knit and sew. Martin went on to a degree in fashion at Middlesex University, were he developed his knitting skills and produced a collection of handknits for his final degree show. After graduating he went on to work for Artwork, an influential handknit design company and later as chief designer for Jaeger. More recently he is producing 3 or 4 Rowan brochures per season and also a series of books including Nordic Knits and Aran Knits.
 
Carol Sulcoski
Carol Sulcoski is an attorney turned fiber artist: after the birth of her oldest child, she retired from the practice of law and began knitting in earnest. She is the author of Knitting Socks With Handpainted Yarns and co-author of Knit So Fine (both Interweave Press). Her knitting designs and articles have appeared in Vogue Knitting, Knit Simple, KnitScene, St.-Denis Magazine, Knitty.com and other publications. Carol also creates hand-dyed yarns and fibers as Black Bunny Fibers, and she began her own pattern line in 2009. She lives with her family outside Philadelphia.
 
Ysolda Teague
Ysolda Teague is a young Scottish designer who has published popular knitting patterns in Twist Collective and Knitty, as well as two books in her Whimsical Little Knits series and her new pattern collection and resource book Little Red in the City. Her many other patterns are available on her website, www.ysolda.com, and in yarn stores. She lives and works in Edinburgh but loves to travel, especially when it means meeting the people who make her patterns.
 
Mary Beth Temple

Mary Beth Temple designs in both knit and crochet—and sometimes both at the same time! Her patterns and articles have appeared in a wide variety of books and magazines, and she is the lead designer for Hooked for Life, LLC, which is available online and via your local yarn store. Mary Beth is the author of the humor books The Secret Language of Knitters and Hooked for Life: Adventures of a Crochet Zealot as well as two crochet home-decor booklets for Leisure Arts. She hosts the weekly crochet podcast Getting Loopy (www.GettingLoopy.com) and loves to teach, both online and in real life.

Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton’s thirteenth pattern book, Reflections, featuring yarns from the Poems Collection from Universal Yarn, was released summer of 2012. With more pattern books and e-zines in the works, she stays busy designing and growing her own yarn label, Heaven’s Hand. In her thirtieth year as a published handknit designer, Cornelia divides her time between Sweden and Atlanta.
 
Anna Zilboorg
Anna is an Anglican solitary living in the Blue Ridge Mountains with the unlikely vocation of knitting. She has pursued knitting styles and patterns around the world; her first book, Fancy Feet, brought traditional Turkish patterns into mainstream American knitting. Her next book, Magnificent Mittens, was recently republished as Magnificent Mittens and Socks. Knitting for Anarchists, the book she considers her best, takes an analytical look at the whole craft. At present, she comes out of the hermitage only to teach.
