Leading for Equitable Outcomes in Special Education: Focusing on Systems and Structures

NOTE: Contact Cheryl Domenichelli at c.domenichelli@berkeley.edu to join the second weekend of this workshop.

Presented by Dr. Tom Green and Dr. Lihi Rosenthal.

Every student deserves high-quality instruction and comprehensive support such that they can achieve their full potential and thrive within our education systems. We share your belief that Special Education presents unique opportunities and challenges to educational leaders.

This 4-day seminar provides essential training for educational leaders who are focused on supporting practices in their schools that improve student outcomes in Special Education. We will address the challenges you face associated with serving the most marginalized students within your system. We will center our conversations on equity issues that are significant to Special Education: student discipline, race, class, language acquisition, and gender.

The eight modules of the seminar each include time for analysis, reflection, and implementation planning. Together we will build a network of practitioners who share a common vision around Special Education.

Participants will:

Develop facility in understanding and leveraging the main legal and financial drivers that fuel special education practice

Integrate expertise and resources from other child-serving systems to provide holistic support to students with intersectional needs

Locate the site leader’s actionable space in ensuring high-quality special education service delivery capable of closing equity gaps

Analyze best practices to identify a site-specific plan for ensuring a comprehensive system of supports

Create a concrete plan to improve site practices by re-imagining collaboration practices, service coordination, supervision and evaluation efforts, discipline practices, and instructional delivery
