Course Description:

Every military clinic sees their fair share of anterior trauma.  It can range from the chipped tooth while eating dinner, to a scuffle during the patient's time off, to the butt of a rifle.  Every Soldier has a story and with that story comes a different type of dental alveolar trauma. The purpose of this course is to provide some ways that we can look at managing trauma for a successful esthetic outcome and long term biological success.

Outline
· Ends: Doctrine and Policy on Army Readiness (Our Objective)
· Ways: What we need to get it done (Methods)
· Means: What do you need to do this (Resources)

How can you classify dental alveolar trauma (Decision Matrix)

Define the problem in a joint military mindset: Ends, Ways, Means

Case 1: Non Surgical Root Canal Therapy

Case 2: Vital Pulp Therapy

Case 3: Ribbond and a dental implant

Learning objectives:
  • Apply the three step approach to management of anterior trauma
  • Understand when direct repairs may be indicated
  • Know that immediate removal of a tooth or immediate devitalization may not be the best option
  • Understand time associated with different complicated crown fractures and the impact it can have on readiness
  • Compare and contrast survival rates and available literature for vital pulp therapy, and how it can be used effectively in our young population
  • Understand differences in failure rate of direct restorations for vital and non vital teeth.
  • Apply the principles of bonding so you can utilize a patient’s own tooth as a provisional.
