Course Description:

Approximately 50% of men over age 50 snore and women have a similar problem after menopause. Snoring has a very negative effect on relationships with the bed partners. It has been estimated that 20% of adults suffer from sleep apnea. This serious medical disorder can increase the risk of high blood pressure, acid reflux, heart attack, strokes, type 2 diabetes, five times greater chance of cancer, memory loss, impotence and depression. When the patient has a hospital or home sleep study and are diagnosed by a sleep specialist to have mild to moderate sleep apnea then oral appliances fabricated by a dentist is the first treatment option. Patients diagnosed with severe sleep apnea are prescribed a CPAP device (Continuous Positive Air Pressure). Patients with severe sleep apnea live ten years less than patients without sleep apnea. The patient acceptance of oral appliances is much higher than the CPAP device which blows air up the nose all night.
