#MeToo: The Self of the Minister, and the Role of Clergy Women in Light of the #MeToo Movement.

“Making one’s own wounds a source of healing, therefore, does not call for a sharing of

superficial personal pains but for a constant willingness to see one’s own pain and suffering

as rising from the depth of the human condition which all [humanity] share” (Nouwen, 1979, p. 88).

The #MeToo Movement has not only forced us to face the pervasiveness of sexual trauma in our society, it has also forced us to come to terms with the various forms of trauma in our own lives. We are wounded healers, and in light of #MeToo we owe it to ourselves and to the congregants we serve to tend to those wounds. This 5-hour experiential workshop will not only educate clergy women on the multifaceted effects of trauma, it will also facilitate the processing of our own experiences of trauma. Among other things, we will explore topics relating to how we address issues of sexual misconduct in the church, and other hashtags such as #ChurchToo and #SilenceIsNotSpiritual. We will also touch on issues of gender inequality and gender discrimination, our responsibility, if any, to shed light on these issues and how these movements have changed how we preach, and what we preach.

Presenter – Rev. Alice Fadiora, MDiv, MFT

Alice Fadiora is a Marriage and Family Therapist in Princeton NJ who specializes in the integration of spirituality and psychotherapy. Alice’s goal as a therapist is to walk alongside individuals, couples, and families, in times of transition, stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship issues, and marital and family conflict. She believes in a holistic approach to wellness that considers not only the mental and emotional, but also the biological, the spiritual, the occupational, and the social aspects of our lives. Her past experience includes working as interim pastor and prison chaplain. Alice also works as a spiritual director and pastoral counselor serving her local church, and the surrounding communities.
