"Conscious Sedation" and the other 4-letter words - Part I
Presented by Dr. Kevin Croft

Thursday, February 21, 2019
7:30 p.m. CST

Subject Code: 340 - Anesthesia, Pain Mgmt, Sedation, Pharmacology Credits: 1.5

Description:
Conscious sedation is as integral to dental vernacular as Novocain, laughing gas, silver fillings, caps, carpules and pulling teeth. While each of these other terms have clear alternatives, which are both more accurate and perhaps more professional, using the term “conscious sedation” has proven exceedingly consequential. “Conscious sedation” means very different things to various patients, dentists, staff, educational companies, and even various state and national regulatory agencies. While substitutions such as “Novocain” for “local anesthesia” or “caps” for “full coverage crowns” are of minimal consequence, replacing “conscious sedation” for more appropriate sedation terms can and has been a factor in successful litigation against dentists, harm to patients and even many deaths over many decades.

Learning Objectives:
-Participants will be able to discuss historical events central to the evolution of pain/anxiety management in dentistry

-Participants will be able to discuss the fundamental components of modern sedation guidelines and educational requirements.

This course is significantly more valuable when taken as part of a 2-part series, dentists who enroll in either part 1 or part 2 will still find benefit.

*Registration closes at 5:00 pm CT on the day of the event*

"Conscious Sedation" and other 4-letter words - Part II
Presented by Dr. Kevin Croft

Thursday, February 28, 2019
7:30 p.m. CST

Subject Code: 340 - Anesthesia, Pain Mgmt, Sedation, Pharmacology Credits: 1.5

Description:
Conscious sedation is an antiquated term. It has all but been eliminated from the training guidelines, textbooks and educational vernacular. State and regional legislative approaches are gradually following suit and with sufficient time so too will dentists, staff and patients. The use of modern vernacular in treatment planning, education, advertising and patient care is crucial to obtain true informed consent and to appropriately represent to our patients what it is we actually offer and are licensed to do.

This course will discuss the appropriate use of modern terms regarding sedation care in the dental setting. It also includes some concise take-home gems to help the modern dentist implement small but vital changes to ensure they are running a safe, modernized dental practice as relates to pain and anxiety management.

This course is significantly more valuable when taken as part of a 2-part series, dentists who enroll in either part 1 or part 2 will still find benefit.

Learning Objectives:
-Participants will be able to outline the sedation spectrum and will receive education regarding the use of modern terms in sedation dentistry
-Participants will be able to distinguish between depth of sedation and route of administration
-Participants will be able to discuss the fundamental components of modern sedation guidelines and educational requirements.

*Registration closes at 5:00 pm CT on the day of the event*
