PRESENTATION TITLE: Building Managers: Leading the Charge on Sustainable Apartment Buildings and Communities
AUTHOR: Melinda Dewsnap, Sustainability Engagement Manager, Residential, City of Sydney

ABSTRACT:Apartment buildings are amongst the largest and fastest growing segments of the property sector and are increasingly at the core of communities in our cities. Due to the complex decision making, lack of monitoring and understanding of building performance there is significant opportunity in this market for improved environmental outcomes and cost savings. The launch of the new NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) tool for apartment buildings in 2018 will provide an indication of environmental performance and running costs of apartment buildings. This is opening up a new market for Building Managers to track and compare building performance and also be recognised for the work they are leading. Research shows increasing consumer demand for building performance information. This will drive significant uplift in environmental performance, as has been seen in the commercial market where this rating is now mandatory.

BIOGRAPHY: Melinda is responsible for the delivery of the City of Sydney's Residential Apartments Sustainability Plan. The City is working accross government, with industry and strata community organisations to drive sustainability improvements in this sector; to create more efficient buildings powered by renewable energy and support resilient communities into the future.

ABSTRACT: The Indigenous Procurement Policy instated in 2015, required that government organisations provide 3% of their business opportunities to genuine Indigenous owned companies. BIOGRAPHY: Greg Welsh has worked as CEO and in senior management roles in Sebel Furniture, Corporate Express (now Staples/Winc), Lomb Scientific, Childflight and started his career as an Airtraffic Controller. Greg is currently a Director of Winya Indigenous Furniture. Winya won the Chartered Institute of Procurement (CIPS) award for Best Contribution to CSR and was the overall winner of the CIPS Austral-Asian awards in 2018 and the City of Sydney and other awards for Sustainability and CSR. Greg has used this background to gain strong support from the Furniture Industry for Winya’s manufacturing model, to achieve genuine long-term Indigenous employment in the Australian Office Furniture Industry. Greg is not an Indigenous man. But like many Australians, Greg has a grandfather who the family believe was Indigenous (a Kamilaroi man), however the records are imprecise as people deliberately hid their Indigenous backgrounds at that time in our history. Greg has an MBA from the AGSM and is a Justice of the Peace
