Today, the definition of bioactivity is expanding in dentistry by virtue of the many new “smart” materials that are emerging into the dental marketplace. So…. what exactly does “bioactivity” mean in dentistry today? In addition to the effect of fluoride on healthy hydroxyapatite via conversion to fluorapatite, the ability of a material to contribute calcium and phosphate ions to help rebuild demineralized tooth structure is the new paradigm. By definition, this means the precipitation of apatite crystals on the surface of the material in the presence of moisture (saliva). It’s not just about fluoride any more. In this informative webinar, Dr. Lowe will discuss how these bioactive dental materials are influencing the way we approach the selection of restorative materials for our patients.
