Osteoporosis is a world-wide health problem that primarily affects the aging population but also individuals with multiple myeloma, Paget’s disease and selected drug therapies. This course presents current medical bisphosphonate therapies for osteoporosis; research on the effects of oral and IV medications on dental surgical procedures; and the results of recent peer-reviewed publications and case reports on diagnosis, prognosis and dental management of osteonecrosis of the jaw as well as potential complications of bisphosphonate therapies.

Learning objectives:

  • The participant will be able to identify the symptoms, vulnerable populations, potential oral complications and related dental surgical therapies of osteoporosis.
  • The participant will learn how oral and IV bisphosphonate therapies impact dental procedures.
  • The participant will be able to diagnose and create a treatment plan for patients who suffer from osteonecrosis of the jaw, a potential complication for patients on bisphosphonate therapies.
  • The participant will be able to recognize risk factors for osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients taking bisphosphonate medications.
