Diane Allan
President
Measurement Canada
Diane Allan is the President of Measurement Canada, an agency of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. This Agency is responsible for ensuring accuracy in the selling of measured goods, developing and enforcing the laws related to measurement accuracy, approving and inspecting measuring devices and investigating complaints of suspected inaccurate measurement. Prior to starting her public service career, Diane worked in the biotechnology sector for a few years. In the 90s, she began her public service career managing grants and contributions programs and continually progressed in more senior roles in both policy development and operational delivery within the Health, Agricultural and Transportation portfolios in the Government of Canada. She has always played a pivotal strategic role in change leadership to help build organizational capacity, continuous engagement and awareness by influencing others and facilitating horizontal linkages and integration within, across and externally with the aim to ensure that the public service is successful in delivering its operational as well as its modernization agenda. Diane is a scientist by training with degrees in biochemistry, animal physiology, and cellular and molecular medicine.
 
John Anderson

John has been with Emerson Process Management for over 34 years specializing the last 30 years in Gas Regulators, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and Remote Telemetry Units (RTUs) used in the natural gas industry. His positions with Emerson include international assignments in Singapore and Bologna, Italy. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, Duluth with a Bachelor of Science in both Electronics Technology and Manufacturing Technology and from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting. He also has a MABS from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, TX. John lives in Zimmerman, MN. and is currently a Director of Business Development Natural Gas with Emerson’s Pressure Management Group in McKinney, Texas.
 
Bob Bennett

I have been employed at Honeywell since 1990 both in California and now in Nebraska. Prior work experience includes 5 years at Southwest Gas Corporation, Victorville, California, as an Engineering Supervisor and 15 years at West Ohio Gas Company, Lima, Ohio, as an Engineer. Most of this utility experience was in the operations area including gas distribution engineering, meter and regulator station design, cathodic protection, warehousing, regulatory audits, and technical services.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio and a MBA from the University of Dayton.
My present position as Principal Sales Support Specialist at the factory in Nebraska City includes responsibility for providing training and product support for utility, industrial, and sales personnel in the application, use, and maintenance of Honeywell products. Some recent events attended where training was provided were the Northeast Gas Association’s Annual Gas Operations Conference, the Midwest Gas Association Annual Gas Operations Conference, the Southern Gas Association’s Spring and Fall Conference and Expos, the American School of Gas Measurement Technology, the Appalachian Gas Measurement Short Course, the Western Gas Measurement Short Course, various Gas Technology Institute courses, and the Missouri Association of Natural Gas Operators Safety Seminar.
 
Brendan Bottcher

Brendan Bottcher is an Application Specialist with Spartan Controls serving Alberta and based out of Edmonton. Brendan specializes in the gas utility/distribution/pipeline fields. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Chemical Engineering degree and has been working with the natural gas industry for 2 years. His background has focused on regulators, control valves and related instrumentation.
 
Travis Bowman

Travis Bowman is currently the applications engineering and commercial manager for the LNGo product at Siemens. He supports liquefaction and gas-to-power efforts, with specific responsibility for development of virtual LNG pipelines from both conventional and unconventional gas sources. He was previously a business development manager for the company’s initiative is Saudi Arabia, developing client relations and increasing manufacturing footprint in the Kingdom. Mr. Bowman has been with Siemens 14 years, holding roles in sales, engineering, operations, research and aftermarket service. He was in the first class of graduates from the company’s 5-year Engineering Management Acceleration Program. He earned a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering from Louisiana State University and played midfield for the LSU lacrosse team.
 
Kenneth Buys

Kenneth (Ken) Buys is a Manager of Operations and Engineering Services for the American Gas Association (AGA). Ken started at AGA in May of 2018 and is Staff Executive for both the Gas Control and Transmission Measurement Committees.
After earning his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Michigan – Ann Arbor Ken worked for Northern Indiana Public Service Company for seventeen years in various engineering related positions. During that time he went back to school and received an MBA from Indiana University in 1997. He also worked at Public Service of Colorado for fifteen years, most of that managing the Gas Control Department. Ken’s career has always been in the natural gas industry, and has spanned thirty seven years. He has experience in everything from distribution, transmission and measurement to marketing, research and gas supply.
Ken has been married thirty nine years and has three children and two grandchildren. He and Mary Beth live in Arlington Virginia.
 
Kerry Checkwitch
Enbridge Gas Inc.
Kerry Checkwitch is a registered professional engineer with 30 years of experience in the natural gas industry. Currently employed in Calgary, Alberta by Enbridge Gas Transmission & Midstream (formally Spectra Energy) he is a Mechanical Engineer focused on the measurement and analysis of natural gas and its related by-products. Prior to joining Spectra Energy in 2004, Kerry worked as an engineering and business consultant in the natural gas transmission industry for a period of two and a half years. Previous to that he spent 12 years with NOVA Gas Transmission and TransCanada PipeLines in a wide variety of engineering , operations and management roles. Kerry is an active member of the AGA Technical Measurement Committee and Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) Measurement Technical Committee, serving six years as Chair of that committee. Kerry proudly holds a Costco Gold Star Membership card.
 
Paul Cheliak

Paul Cheliak is the Vice President of Public and Regulatory Affairs with the Canadian Gas Association in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The CGA is the national voice for Canada’s natural gas distribution companies who deliver natural gas to over 20 million Canadians. Paul leads CGA’s federal departmental and political strategy to build support for sustainable natural gas use. Paul also works with utilities to advance their regulated business growth opportunities. Prior to joining CGA, Paul worked with Natural Resources Canada – Canada’s federal resource department – providing natural gas market and policy advice to the Department’s senior management. Paul lives in Ottawa with his wife and two daughters and is an avid (but not necessarily successful) fisherman.
 
Jack Crompton

Jack Crompton has deep roots in Whistler and is passionate about the future of his community. His grandparents were original shareholders in the Garibaldi Lift Company and the Crompton’s have been engaged in business and community organizations since the beginning.
Jack's professional life has focused mainly on transportation and software. He founded Whistler Resort Cabs and operated the company until selling the company in 2008. He then founded and served as CEO for Ridebooker; a Whistler-based transportation software company. In October 2018, Jack resigned his position with Ridebooker to serve full-time as Mayor of Whistler.
Jack likes to talk politics of any description. He is fascinated by political history, local government and international affairs.
Jack and his wife Carolyn have four children; Georgia, Margaret, Van and Harriet. They enjoy "the beautiful game", mountain biking, skiing and being in the mountains.
 
Aaron De Raadt

Aaron DeRaadt graduated from the Electrical Engineering Technician Program from Fanshawe College in 2006. Throughout college Aaron worked for Union Gas in the Measurement Engineering department where he was dedicated to a telemetry upgrade project. In 2011 Aaron transitioned into a full time role as an Operations Technician in Cambridge Ontario. In this role Aaron is responsible for Odourant systems, high volume regulation stations, PFM sets, and SCADA systems maintenance. In 2015 Aaron was appointed to the Senior Technician role where he increased his knowledge on a variety of different regulator and relief valve setups, and acts as a mentor for other techs in our company.
 
Rob Dolhai

Rob is the Product Manager for Ontario and Manitoba at AF Hall. His studies were in Mechanical Engineering and holds a C.E.T. from Mohawk College. During his 10 years in the industry, Rob has had Product Manager roles with manufacturers such as Dresser and General Electric. His strengths are in station design, and is dedicated to supporting gas utilities with unique and honest solutions.
 
Mario Dupuis

Started his second career in metrology with Measurement Canada in 2007.
First assignment as Quality System Manager was to prepare the laboratories for the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, which was obtained in 2009.
Then lead the Volume Measurement laboratory group from 2012 to 2016, mainly performing type approval testing and volumetric standards calibration under the Weight & Measures Act.
Was the director of the Approval and Calibration Service Laboratory of MC until 2018.
Began his career in 1989, as an analytical chemist with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), where he managed the residue testing laboratory.
 
Timothy M. Egan

Timothy M. Egan became President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Gas Association in September 2010.
Prior to his appointment he was President of High Park Group (HPG), a public affairs consulting firm. He has an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Ottawa, and common and civil law degrees from McGill University. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1995.
Mr. Egan is publisher of the Energy Regulation Quarterly, and editor of the magazine Energy. He also serves as Canada’s representative on the International Gas Union (IGU), sitting on the Executive Committee and serving as North American Regional Coordinator.
He is married to Patricia (nee Armstrong) and they have five daughters.

Michael Escaler is in his seventh year as a Measurement Technician with Pacific Northern Gas (PNG). Prior to joining PNG in 2012, Michael spent 9 years working in the Pulp and Paper industry in northern B.C., during which time he acquired his Red Seal certification as an Industrial Instrumentation Mechanic. In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking, ice hockey, fishing, and many other outdoor activities that life in northern BC has to offer.

Through his various career positions, he has gained a wealth of experience and knowledge on pipelines, compression, regulation and LNG. He also the chairperson for this year’s Gas Measurement and Regulation School. In his spare time he is a Director and the Treasurer for the Kitimat Marine Rescue Society and is an Advanced Crew member for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue unit based out of Kitimat.
 
Randy Greggains

Randy joined SaskEnergy in 1998, after having worked for sixteen years in various roles with increasing responsibility within Saskatchewan Energy and Mines. Randy is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1982, and of the University of Regina, with a Masters of Public Administration in 1993.
Randy has worked in a number of financial and customer service functions within SaskEnergy and TransGas and currently is the Vice President responsible for Operations. In this current role he leads the transmission and distribution operations groups who maintain and operate the natural gas system to serve customers in the province as well as the System Control area responsible for 24/7 system operation as well as short term planning.
 
Ann-Marie Hessian

AnnMarie Hessian is an Engineer-In-Training at Enbridge Gas Inc. She studied chemical engineering at Dalhousie University and now works in the Stations Engineering team at Enbridge Gas. Before joining station engineering, she worked in energy efficiency programs at Union Gas. In 2018, AnnMarie led site assessments and risk reviews for each of the Indirect Fire Line Heaters across the Legacy Union Gas franchise. Today, she will speak on the holistic approach to risk ranking for heating system equipment, general findings and takeaways from the assessment.

Main responsibilities consist in enhancing and implementing industry marketing activities to increase customer recognition and consideration of the overall group capabilities, as well as, identifying growth opportunities.
 
Joe Pirkl

When it comes to the American petroleum industry, valve expertise is synonymous with the name Joe Pirkl. With decades of experience in the field and working with several valve manufacturers, Joe has built an impressive wheelhouse of technical and real-world skills. He’s augmented his knowledge with countless hours of hands-on maintenance and repair of valves and actuators, spanning the most common makes and models in the industry both in North America and Internationally.
Joe is the resident professor of ValvePro® for the Petroleum Extension Program at the University of Texas and has certified hundreds of valve maintenance technicians across the country. He’s a strong leader with a strong presence that instills confidence and determination in those who work around him and demands nothing but the best from his students and colleagues. He currently holds the positions of General Manager and Senior Valve Technician at Sealweld Corporation, in Houston, Texas.
 
Walter Richter

Walter Richter is the head of Sales Division “Odorization & Gas Distribution” with LEWA GmbH based in Leonberg , Germany. He is responsible for the worldwide sales of LEWA odorizations systems. Walter started his career with LEWA in 1992 as Service engineer, where he commissioned and maintained odorization systems. In 1999 Walter moved into the sales division “Oil and Gas”, and 1 and ½ year later he moved in the Sales Division “Odorization & Gas Distribution”. Walter was designing and sealing customized odorization systems as well as standard systems, which leads him into the position as product manager (2005) and later to the team leader (2008).
His background is focused on Surface Engineering & Materials Science (University of Applied Sciences, Aalen, Germany) and Corrosion Science and Engineering (UMIST – The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology).
 
Julien Samson

Julien graduated in 2002 with a degree in Industrial Engineering from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS Julien has been licensed as a professional engineer in the province of Ontario since 2008. Julien's career started in the automotive parts manufacturing sector, focusing much of his time in the quality and process improvement area. In 2013 Julien joined the Station Engineering group at Enbridge Gas Inc. (Formerly Union Gas).
 
Martin Schlebach

Martin Schlebach Joined Daniel industries Canada in 1989 after graduating from SAIT Polytechnic with a diploma in Electronic Engineering. Over the past 25 years Martin has specialized in the development, testing, approvals and use of Ultrasonic technology in high pressure liquid and gas measurement. The use of gas ultrasonic meters in custody transfer applications has become Martin’s specialty, he helps designs, implement and aids in ongoing operation of these measurement devices. Currently Martin acts as the Director of Global Business Development for Emerson Automation Solutions-Daniel, where he takes part in numerous measurement schools, conferences and regulatory meetings.
 
John Seaman

John Seaman is a Technical Learning Supervisor with AltaGas Utilities Inc. (AUI) based in Leduc, Alberta. John started his career with AUI in 2013 as a Technician, Distribution Operations (TDO) where he maintained the company’s natural gas distribution system. During his role as a TDO, John became the subject matter expert for vacuum loop steam line heaters and led AUI’s annual maintenance program. In early 2018, John moved into the role of Technical Learning Supervisor; a role in which he supports the competency development of AUI’s field technicians. John received his Gas Operator License (Gas Technician 2) in 1998 and has worked in various roles in the oil, propane, and natural gas energy sector, from commercial to residential service.
 
Mike Shannon

Mike Shannon is Vice President of Storage and Transmission Operations and the Integration Management Office (IMO) for Enbridge Gas Inc.
In this role, Mike is responsible for the strategy, development and operations of the gas storage compression and transmission business. He is also accountable for the utility’s new Integration Management Office providing integration governance that supports each vice president as Enbridge Gas Distribution and Union Gas come together as a combined utility.
Before assuming his current role, Mike held the position of Vice President, Distribution Operations for Union Gas. He led the operating and support activities for the construction, operation and maintenance of the company’s distribution system serving more than 400 Ontario communities, and its related support functions such as fleet, warehousing, meter shop and facilities.
Mike joined Union Gas in 2001, and also previously held the position of Vice President, Engineering, Construction, and Storage Transmission Operations. Over the course of his more than 30-year career, Mike has held a number of senior management positions in operations and mining across Ontario.
Mike holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Manitoba, and is also a graduate of the Master of Business Administration program from Lansbridge University in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Mike is active in the natural gas industry through his participation as a member of the Canadian Gas Association Standing Committee on Operations, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority’s Natural Gas Advisory Council, and the Board of Directors of Ontario One Call.
 
Leigh Ann Shoji-Lee
President, PNG and Chair

Ms. Shoji-Lee is currently President of PNG, a position that she has held since 2016. She has experience in both the natural gas and electric utility sectors in British Columbia and Ontario, and in the energy service sector. Her career has included executive positions at Union Gas Limited; BC Hydro; Canadian Utility Construction; Britco LP; and Pacific Northern Gas Ltd. In October 2018, as part of the initial public offering of AltaGas Canada Inc., she was given the added responsibility of EVP, Utility Operations for ACI, in addition to her responsibilities for PNG. ACI’s utility businesses include: Pacific Northern Gas Ltd; AltaGas Utilities Inc.; and Heritage Gas Ltd. She is accountable for operational alignment and effectiveness of ACI’s utility business units and is also responsible for strategic leadership of PNG.
On February 5, 2019, Leigh Ann was announced as the Chair of the Board of the Canadian Gas Association.
 
Jeffrey Simpson

Jeffrey Simpson is Canada’s most decorated journalist. For more than 40 years, he wrote for The Globe and Mail, for 32 as national affairs columnist. He also appeared frequently on television and radio in English and French, and wrote seven books, one of which won the Governor-General’s award, another the $50,000 Donner Prize for the best book on public policy. He won the National Newspaper award twice, and the National Magazine award for column writing. He also won the Hyman Solomon Award for excellent in public policy journalism, the Arthur Kroeger award for contributions to public discourse, and the Charles Lynch Award for excellence in political journalism.
In 2000, Jeffrey became an Officer of the Order of Canada. In addition, he has received eight honorary degrees, spoken at more than 600 conferences, penned more than 6,000 columns, and been a guest lecturer at Harvard, Oxford, Princeton, Brigham Young, Johns Hopkins, Maine, California and many universities in Canada.
He has taught as an adjunct professor at the Queen’s University Institute of Policy Studies and the University of Ottawa law school. He has been a visiting fellow at the University of Alberta, Queen’s, and the University of British Columbia. He is now a senior fellow at the University of Ottawa Graduate School of Policy and International Affairs. He is a member of the executive committee of that university’s board of governors, having also served on the Queen’s board for six years.
He served as vice-chair of the City of Ottawa library board and was awarded the William Watkinson award for outstanding contributions to the Canadian library community. He was a juror for the Charles Taylor Prize for non-fiction books in 2008, and for the $75,000 Cundill History Prize in 2011, 2012, 2017 and 2018, and the Flood-Baer prize for health policy in 2013. He is also a member of the Trilateral Commission.
Since retiring from The Globe and Mail in 2016 Jeffrey continues to speak at conferences and lecture at universities.
 
Dale Smith

Dale Smith has worked for Union Gas (now Enbridge Gas Inc) since graduating as an Electrical Engineering Technologist in 1995. Dale starting his career in his native hometown of North Bay Ontario, later moving to Chatham, Ontario. Currently Dale’s role is the Senior Electronics Technician within Measurement Engineering Services.
Dale’s experiences within the field of odourization include; designing, fabricating and installation of odourant equipment, training operations personnel on the use of this equipment, planning and executing preodourization jobs, and responding to odourant anomalies.
Dale’s most important focus is ensuring a balance between the work he enjoys and the family he loves. Dale is married and is fortunate to have 3 wonderful children, 2 girls aged 13 and 15, and a boy aged 10. Dale enjoys spending his spare time coaching high school Badminton, playing sports, woodworking, and taking afternoon naps (on weekends).

Chris has worked in the Canadian Natural Gas Industry since 1995, when he graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Western University in London, Ontario. Early in his career, he worked at Consumer Gas in a variety of departments including Lab Services, Engineering, Special Projects and Customer Care. From Consumers Gas, his passion for the Energy Industry brought him to KTI Limited, where he has helped gas, electricity and water customers find new ways to use technology to bringing benefits to both shareholders and end use customers. Today, as President, Chris is responsible for all ongoing operations and strategic direction at KTI Limited. Chris lives in Unionville, Ontario, has been married to his wife Carolyn for 20 years and has beautiful daughters.

Raul Vasquez is Senior Engineer for the Stations, Telemetry and Controls group at Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc. His work experience has included site layout, equipment design, gate & feeder station design; in the following industries steel mills, mining and natural gas and in different consulting engineering companies. During his career he has worked as a senior mechanical designer, senior layout designer, field engineer and currently as a senior engineer. Raul is registered as a professional engineer in the province of Ontario.
 
Daniel Veenstra
Enbridge Gas
Dan Veenstra is a Corrosion Technician with Union Gas, based in Eastern Ontario. Dan joined Union Gas in early 2016 and is responsible for the design and maintenance of corrosion protection systems for approximately 1200KM of gas pipelines. Prior to Union Gas, Dan was doing a variety of corrosion surveys for Corrosion Service. These surveys included bridges, parking garages, transmission pipelines, tank farms, water mains and the inside of water towers, amongst others. Dan lives in the country in Kingston Ontario with his soon-to-be wife Kristy (June 23, he should probably be working on that). He likes to spend his free time staying home working on the garage and property while neglecting the house itself.
