At the Fort Worth Goodwill, a youth program — operated in partnership with Fort Worth Independent School District (ISD), Arlington ISD and Tarrant County Workforce Board — is serving youth ages 16 to 24 who are seeking to obtain their high school equivalency (HSE). Students come to school Monday through Thursday for half of the day and then work at Goodwill for the other half of the day. On Fridays, a youth specialist conducts a life skills class for all participants. This program allows youth the opportunity to earn their HSE while earning a paycheck. In addition all youth are set-up with a graduation exit plan and action steps. Join this session to learn more and take home ideas that could be applied at your Goodwill.

The challenge for youth workforce programs is clear: “How do we teach employer-requested work skills without boring and disempowering youth?” Through this workshop, we will examine The Groundwork Project’s collaborative and experiential approach as a remedy to many of the pitfalls of traditional youth programs. Participants will explore the self-determination theory as a framework for holistic youth workforce development. Finally, we will take a critical look at possible blind spots of these types of programs, raising questions of race and culture vis-à-vis soft skills training.

Interrupt Your Thinking to Boost Success

How often do you and your coworkers do something because it’s the way you’ve always done it? Are you in search of new and different strategies to support your program and employee outcomes? Do you wonder if your Goodwill’s programs are missing participation by some members of your community? Explore these ideas and more with colleagues. Learn more about how to interrupt unconscious bias to expand mission outreach, reach goals and improve outcomes. Leave with the critical skills to understand inclusion and equity, and have a starting point to build on the conversation back home. This program has been submitted to the HR Certification Institute and SHRM for review.

Our People, Our Mission: Improving Employee Well-Being through Health, Happiness and Support
Speaker: Kate Dawson, Good Life Program Manager, Goodwill Industries of Fort Worth

We need employees to show up each day, on time and ready to work; however, the reality is, many of our employees face obstacles that can interfere with performing up to their potential or even keeping their jobs. Some of these factors can include physical health, stress in their personal lives and other issues, which makes the old notion of, "Don't bring home to work," close to impossible. Find out how the Good Life Program helps to support employees and provide the same mission services the Fort Worth Goodwill offers to its community through education, case management and resource navigation. This program has been submitted to the HR Certification Institute and SHRM for review.

Utilizing Neuroscience to Build Resilience and Improve Service Delivery
Speakers: Tabitha Manross, Manager of Strategic Initiatives, and Nathan Simpson, Retail Goodwill Guide, Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana

New findings in neuroscience and genetics show that poverty and its associated stresses affect how our brains develop, including how we respond to challenges, control behavior and analyze problems.
