for delegates attending the 2019 African Conference for Linear Infrastructure and Ecology (ACLIE) in South Africa


VISAS

Health & Vaccinations

Malaria: The Kruger National Park is designated as a malaria area and it is advisable to take malaria prophylaxy for the duration of your visit to the Lowveld. Please consult with your medical practitioner for advice on malaria and relevant vaccinations. A medical practitioner is available within the Skukuza Rest Camp, as well as a pharmacy. Please note that the nearest private hospital is the Kiaat Private Hospital, which is located in Nelspruit (approx. 2 hours drive from Skukuza).


Climate

Skukuza normally receives rain during mid-summer (approx 353 mm of rain per year). The lowest rainfall occurs in June (0 mm). The average midday temperatures range from 24.5°C in July to 31.7°C in January. The region is the coldest during July when the temperature drops to 8.7°C on average during the night.

During the 2019 African Conference for Linear Infrastructure and Ecology (ACLIE), the temperatures should be pleasant during the day (upper 20°C) and in the evenings (around 13-17 °C). It is advisable to bring a fleece / jacket and a warm hat for early morning game drives – although these can be purchased at the onsite store.

Travel By Air

There are more than 760 international flights to Johannesburg International (OR Tambo) Airport per week. Please check Skyscanner, or for multiple destination flights, Expedia, to see which airlines travel to South Africa and the associated airfare. 

Please note that the Skukuza Airport (SZK) is the closest airport to Skukuza camp and the conference venue and is only a 10 minute road transfer away. We strongly recommend you book flights to Skukuza as a first option. The Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) is NOT in the Kruger Park and is situated approx 1 ½ hours away from Skukuza Camp. Only book flights to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport (MQP) if all flights to Skukuza Airport (SZK) are fully booked.



Skukuza Airport (in the Kruger National Park and close to Skukuza rest camp)

There is a direct flight from Johannesburg International (OR Tambo) Airport to Skukuzu Airport in the Kruger National Park. There are two daily flights (45 minutes in duration)  from Johannesburg to Skukuza Airport and one direct daily flight (2.5 hrs in duration) from Cape Town International Airport to Skukuza Airport.

Transport from Skukuza Airport to Skukuza rest camp

Transfers can be booked online at R280 per person one way, which includes the delivery of the luggage to the unit at Skukuza Camp.  Please note that there are no taxi or shuttle services available from Skukuza Airport and this service can only be booked via the conference organisers.




Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA)

There are many flights to choose from between OR Tambo (Johannesburg) and Kruger Mpumalanga (MQP) Airport. The transfer time from KMIA Airport to Skukuza camp is approximately 1.5 hrs. When booking these flights please remember to adhere to the opening and closing times of the gates into the Kruger National Park.

Transport from KMIA (Nelspruit) to Skukuza rest camp

Transfers can be booked online at R850 per person one way, which includes the delivery of luggage to the unit at Skukuza Camp.  When booking these flights please remember to adhere to the opening and closing times of the gates into the Kruger National Park.



Travel by car

Cars can be hired at the airport in Johannesburg (OR Tambo International) to drive to Skukuza rest camp. The distance is 450 km and the driving time approximately 6 to 8 hours. Toll fees are payable on the N4 when driving from Johannesburg to Skukuza. Please enter the Kruger National Park at the Kruger Gate, at least 30 min before gate closing time to ensure that you arrive at Skukuza rest camp between the opening and closing times.



Car Rental

Car rental can be booked via the conference organisers for delivery at either the Skukuza Airport, Skukuza Rest Camp, or Nelspruit Airport. For these rentals please email: aclie@africamassive.co.za


Road Transfers

The conference organiser offers road transfers in air-conditioned Minivans or small coaches from and to OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) and Skukuza Rest Camp.

Road transfers are offered on days prior to the start of the main conference and departure time is normally at approximately 10am from and to the venue.  If a group booking of 4 people or more is made, a private transfer time can be arranged.  The current transfer rate is R1800 per person one way.

A seat/s can be booked on group a transfer for yourself and/or your family/colleagues.

  • Approx. Travel Time: 6 hours
  • Vehicle Type: Mercedes Vito or similar (van)
  • Rate: R1800.00 Per Person one way

Take note:
A minimum of 4 passengers is required per departure time in order to secure a group transfer vehicle. You will have the option of paying a surcharge (for the empty seats) should there be less than 4 passengers booked on a particular transfer. We will contact you should this need arise.


Late arrivals

Late arrivals are only allowed in cases of emergency (proof and valid reason required) until 21:00 for guests with pre-booked accommodation at certain camps within 10 km distance from the relevant gate. Al ate arrival fee will be charged and is payable at the gate. No late arrivals are allowed at Pafuri, Phalaborwa or Phabeni gates or any other gates for camps more than 10 km away. The late arrival fee for Skukuza camp is R500, valid from 1 November 2015.
