10:30am-11am - The sanctuary will be open to allow fellowship and "debriefing" with each other of the information you've learned (Q&A session)

Each year new individuals are assigned to serve on the main committees of the local church. These  workshops are designed to prepare and equip lay leaders for their roles on these various teams. We are inviting laity to join us for these training sessions to help you start the new year off right in your role to equip the church to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Pastors are also welcome to sit in on any sessions that they believe will be of the most help to their ministry this year.

Registration and fellowship is from 8:30-9am—with light refreshments available in the Welcome Center. Workshops will last from 9-10:30am followed by a half-hour Q&A panel discussion in the sanctuary to wrap-up the morning. Please note that the Nominations and Lay Leadership Team workshop will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd, 1500 Quentin Road, Lebanon, on Saturday, February 3, from 8:30am-2:30pm.

Workshop Descriptions:

Staff Parish Relationship Committee – Rev. James Garner
This workshop will be focused on two primary areas of this important committee: 1) The PPRC/SPRC by “The Book.” Coverage of its makeup, duties and functions as prescribed in The Book of Discipline of the UMC (2016), contrasting that with the way it usually functions in most appointments. 2) Emphasis on the importance of Communication and Relationship Building, the Profile and Ministry Covenant. If time permits, a period of Q&A will follow.

How to be a Great Church Trustee! – Rev. John Laughlin (past President of the Conference Board of Trustees)
You have said, “yes” to serving on your Board of Trustees, but may be wondering just what are you supposed to do. You want to serve well, for you realize being a trustee carries a heavy responsibility! Trustees are responsible for supervising the safe and wise utilization of all church assets. When the church choses to ignore this important oversight, the church can be held liable. During this workshop you will gain clarity and direction related to how best to oversee and maintain all church property, equipment, investments, and resources. This is important work, but it can also be fun and rewarding as you get to utilize your gifts to help the church be faithful to the mission.

 

Mission of the Church, Inside and Outside – Rev. Helen Adams
What is the church mission? How do you decide what it should be...for members and for those outside the church walls? The mission committee has the role of leading and equipping the congregation to engage in ministry. Sometimes this is through financial support of missionaries or disaster relief, sometimes it is through hands on projects, and sometimes this may include partnering with individuals and groups who are not even active in the church. Come explore what this may look like for your church.

 

Outreach / Evangelism - Rev. Mike Netznik (Pastor at Covenant UMC, Klecknersville, PA)
What does it look like for the church to effectively connect with its community? If the church is going to fulfill its role of going out to the world and making disciples, we need to develop an outward focus. Come and learn about how some churches are connecting with local schools, nursing homes, etc. Gather ideas about events and programs that you can host in the community that will engage with the needs of the people who live near your church. Come and dream about how your church can effectively share the good news.

 

Finance Team - Mr. Tim Patschke (Finance Chair at Manhiem Twp: Faith UMC)
The finance team has the responsibility for stewarding the funds of the local church. That means helping to develop a mindset of generosity and mission in the congregation, developing and communicating clear goals for financial support of the church’s ministry, and establishing clear protocols for how funds are received, counted, deposited and spent. Come and learn about the best practices for financial leadership in the church and receive information about training resources that are available from the denomination to support your ministry.

 

Church / Ad Council / Leadership – Rev. Al Smith
Does your leadership team move to meet OR meet to move?  Explore the leadership challenge of the dynamic tension between celebrating and evaluating where we have been and moving forward in God’s design with vision. This session will focus on transforming your church leaders into a team, one that is built around a sense of call and mission. Learn how to help your leaders develop and “own” the mission of the church, and learn how to help congregants to “live into” the overall vision for your congregation. Rev. Smith will also provide information on “The Summit” Leadership Conference, offered by Willow Creek each August, as a powerful tool your church can access as it pursues these goals.

 

Education, Discipleship & Shepherding – Rev. Jason Perkowski
The UMC has always been focused on education and discipleship. So, what does that look like in 2018? Come and get some fresh ideas about establishing a healthy educational and discipleship program for ALL AGES. This includes Bible study; training people in the disciplines of prayer, fasting, service, etc.; discipling people in using their own particular gifts and skills; providing ministry with and for youth and young adults; shepherding folks through their senior years, etc.

 

Nominations and Lay Leadership Team – Rev. Lisa Stine (held at Church of the Good Shepherd)
For those serving on their church’s Nominations/Lay Leadership Team, we will be offering a 5 Hour PLACE Workshop, to be held at Church of the Good Shepherd, 1500 Quentin Road, Lebanon, on Saturday, February 3, from 8:30am-2:30pm. This workshop, facilitated by Rev. Lisa Stine and members of Good Shepherd’s Equipping Team, will provide participants with a hands-on experience of how to use the PLACE program to promote a culture of Equipping at your church. PLACE is tool that incorporates a spiritual gifts inventory along with a personality inventory, and which also takes into account your abilities, your passions, and your life experiences. Rev. Stine will take time with participants to share how her church has used this tool to help nurture a culture of equipping, where all members are encouraged to discover and use their spiritual gifts in service. Lunch is included—and reservations are definitely needed to provide for the meal and the materials. Please contact Rev.
