Many knitters are familiar with cable patterns, but mock cables are often left unexplored. Mock cables look much like true cables, but their texture is achieved by a variety of other techniques including using slipped stitches, decreases, yarnovers and purl stitches to achieve a cable-like appearance. Mock cables are usually faster to work than true cables and achieve a very different fabric density; they are an excellent family of stitch patterns to add to your repertoire. In this class we will look at a variety of mock cable stitch patterns, practice working a variety of textures and talk about when and how to use them in a garment or accessory.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Knit/purl; cast on/bind off, Increase/Decrease

Materials you are required to bring: Smooth worsted-weight yarn in a light to medium color with corresponding needle size (Suggested size: US 7). Please do not use textured, novelty, or difficult-to-use yarn. You will also need stitch markers and a cable needle.

1097, Circular Bavarian Twisted Stitch Knitting - $120

Click on images to enlarge in new window.
Level: Intermediate Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Knitting

Bavarian Twisted Stitch Knitting is a beautiful, ornate style of knitting featuring stitches that are twisted and crossed in pairs to make delicate, sculptural designs. Patterns for this type of knitting are always charted rather than written out and the various charting methods feauture an array of symbols and conventions not commonly seen in other types of knitting charts. This class uses a cowl project to demonstrate how to read a chart for this type of knitting as well as how to work the stitches in the round. We will begin by using a cable needle to cross the stitches but we will also practice working in the traditional manner, without the use of a cable needle. Bavarian stitches are some of the most refined of all the traditional stitch patterns and well worth adding to your repertoire.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Knit/purl; cast on/bind off, Increase/Decrease; must be comfortable knitting in the round on circular needles and reading charts.

Materials you are required to bring: Yarn for class project: Approximately 275 yards worsted weight wool (Woolstok, Brooklyn Tweed Shelter, Cascade 220, Quince & Co. Lark, Woolfolk Tov recommended)
An Important Note on Yarn Choice: In a woolen spun yarn like Shelter the stitches will have a less distinct appearance but a beautiful 3-dimensional quality and it is recommended for its elasticity (which makes the stitches easier to work). For a smoother appearance use a worsted spun yarn like Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok, Cascade 220, Quince & Co Lark or Woolfolk Tov. A bouncey yarn with no less than 80% wool and plenty of spring is ideal. Needles - 20” or 24” circular needle. *A needle with a sharp tip is recommended for ease of working. Accessories: Cable needle, stitch markers, pencil

Homework: You will work the ribbed band of your cowl before class so that you take time to cast on and practice the action of twisted your knit stitches at your own pace; this insures that we can use the class time together to best advantage. Be aware that the rib is not a regular pattern as it flows directly into the stitch patterns. If you have any difficulty working the ribbing we will address it in class. Note: Twisted stitches take time to work, especially if they are new to you; be patient and you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful result. With 20” or 24” circular needle in Size US 7 cast on 156 stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist. All instructions for this type of knitting are charted only, but I have given instructions both ways for the ribbing below. In class we will only be using charts.

Round 1: P1, k1tbl, p2, k1tbl, p1, k1tbl, p2, (k2tbl, p2) twice, k1tbl, p1, k1tbl, p2, k1tbl, p1, k2tbl, pm; repeat from * 5 more times. Your last marker will be your beginning of round marker.

Repeat Round 1 five more times.

K1tbl =knit one stitch through the back loop, twisting the stitch

K2tbl = knit two consecutive stitches through the back loop, twisting each one individually.

P = purl

Have you ever wondered how to make one of those fancy looking graphic design crochet bags but thought it's beyond your skill level? Well, what if I told you that you will be using basic crochet stitches in combination with yarns in a few colors to create all those lovely designs? It's much easier than it looks. This colorwork technique is called tapestry crochet and it creates a dense fabric with no strands showing on the private side of your work, making it ideal for baskets, bags, coasters, and placemats. Join me to learn how to work the tapestry crochet technique in the round and flat, how to incorporate multiple colors and change colors, read charts and even create your own little design. We'll practice your new skills by creating a coffee cup cozy or wrist warmer and a coaster.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Know how to work basic crochet stitches (chain, slip stitch, single crochet)

Materials you are required to bring: 3 colors in a smooth, solid, light- to medium-colored, worsted weight (#4) yarn so that we can see our stitches; Crochet hook in size suitable for your yarn and hooks both 1-2 sizes smaller and larger than the recommended size for your yarn (to find which size will work for you).

Level: Intermediate Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Knitting

Bavarian Twisted Stitch Knitting is a beautiful, ornate style of knitting featuring stitches that are twisted and crossed in pairs to make delicate, sculptural designs. Patterns for traditional Bavarian garments are written for working flat pieces back and forth, which can present a challenge to the knitter, who can’t read the right side when working wrong-side rows. This class uses a small-scale headband project to demonstrate how to read a chart for this type of knitting as well as how to work the stitches on both right and wrong side rows. We will begin by using a cable needle to cross the stitches but we will also practice working in the traditional manner, without the use of a cable needle. Bavarian stitches are some of the most refined of all the traditional stitch patterns and well worth adding to your repertoire. This tiny project knits up surprisingly fast and is the perfect testing ground for the technique.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Knit/purl; cast on/bind off, Increase/Decrease, cables, some experience working twisted stitches is a plus

Materials you are required to bring: Two versions of the headband are available (fingering and sport/dk). You will need: Approximately 105 yards (96 meters) fingering weight yarn OR Approximately 100 yards (91 meters) dk weight yarn. (A bouncy yarn with a high percentage of wool and plenty of spring is recommended. Recommended yarns: Fingering: Quince & Co. Tern or Chickadee, Woolfolk Tynd, Cascade Heritage Sock, Sport/DK: Debbie Bliss Rialto DK, Cascade Yarns 220 Sport, Sublime Extra Fine Merino DK). Needles: Set of knitting needles for working flat knitting; Suggested size for fingering weight version: US 3/3.25 mm, Suggested size for dk weight version: US 4/3.5 mm. (A needle with a sharp tip is recommended for ease of working.) Accessories: Cable needle, stitch markers, pencil

Level: Advanced Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Spinning

Wool comes in an amazing number of types, each of which invites and rewards different approaches to preparation and use. The fine wools, like Merino, are soft but not durable (yet when spun appropriately can last a gratifyingly long time). The mid-grade wools provide serviceable fabrics for daily use: not too soft, not too crisp, they have become one of the mainstays of industrial wool production and may be underestimated by handspinners. The longwools can stand up to a lot of wear and produce nearly luminous colors when dyed but may be challenging to put to use. And then there are the double-coated fleeces, which can be initially perplexing but have the potential to yield every type of strand from cording to soft shawls. Each type of fiber reveals its nature most effectively to the handspinner, rather than through mechanical processing. Working with clean but otherwise straight-from-the-sheep fleece samples, you’ll get an overview of the types of wool that will let you evaluate the wools you encounter, including the odd ones that don’t fit a specific category. We’ll have a lot of fun and you’ll develop a solid framework for understanding the possibilities within the wide world of wool. You’ll go home with enough fiber to continue your experiments.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Able to independently spin singles and make a two-ply yarn; experience in preparing fibers for spinning is useful but not essential

Materials you are required to bring: Wheel or spindle; fiber-prep tools of choice (combs, carders, flicker, or any other OR dog-grooming combs or slickers); the ability to wind a small center-pull ball and ply from it (or skill at Andean plying, or a lazy kate and extra bobbins); sampling tools as convenient, like knitting needles, crochet hooks, or Weave-It or similar extra-simple loom; optional tape and/or hole-punch, for keeping track of fiber samples and yarns (record cards will be provided); a notepad and pen or pencil.

Learn the basic recipe for a double-faced stockinette button band with matching buttonhole and find out how to apply it to almost any cardigan pattern. This buttonband is knitted separately from your cardigan and added after the sweater is assembled. Its structure insures a strong, durable band to sew your buttons to as well as firm, elastic buttonholes that will hold up over time. This method is suitable for a large variety of fibers and thicknesses of yarn and adds elegance and structure to a hand-knit cardigan. We will also cover how to determine buttonhole placement, the best ways to attach buttons and the use of backing buttons and thread shanks to improve the longevity and performance of your buttonband.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: None

Materials you are required to bring: Smooth worsted-weight yarn in a light to medium color with corresponding needle size (Suggested size: US 7). Please do not use textured, novelty, or difficult-to-use yarn. You will also need a calculator, paper, pencil, darning needle, a sewing needle (for use with thread), embroidery thread (if possible), double-pointed needles in size US 1 and US 2 and enough extra yarn to work a button band sample and seam the band to your swatch. If possible, please bring at least one 5/8” button (with or without a shank). Extra buttons will be available in class but since button styles vary so much it is usually better to bring one that is typical of something you would use on a garment.

Homework: Please knit a swatch using worsted weight yarn and size 7 needles (or needles to get a fabric you like) as follows: Cast on 26 sts and work in K2, P2 rib for 1”. Switch to stockinette stitch and work until swatch measures at least 4” long from cast on edge. Bind off and block (if possible). All swatches should be at least 4"x4"/10x10cm. The Swedish workshop founded by Emma Jacobsson, Bohus knitting is best known for its beautiful handknitted items made famous in the late 1930s through the 60s for their attention to detail, innovative design and color, and exacting standards of craftsmanship. Traditional Bohus patterns utilized a fine weight angora and wool blend to create a gorgeous halo and tonal gradations of color. The addition of purl stitches and the sometimes third (or fourth or fifth) color per row opened up limitless design possibilities for the knitter. In this class we will learn a bit about the history of Bohus knitting as well as the technique used to create its masterful effects.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Students must be comfortable knitting in the round on double pointed needles or using magic loop.

Materials you are required to bring: 1“ set US 2 (2.75 mm) dpns + 1“ set US 3 (3.25 mm) dpns.

Level: Beginner Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Knitting

Preparing fibers for spinning using handcards can be a pleasure, but many spinners struggle to find a method that feels effective and does not create pain. Kate, who did not love carding at first, will share the carding method that she uses to balance ergonomics, efficiency, and quality. Usually thought of as a tool for turning fleece into a woolen yarn, handcards can be used in many different ways. Learn how to use your cards to prepare a fleece for woolen or worsted spinning, why the difference is important, and how carding techniques will affect the finished yarn. Handcards are also great tools for blending fibers and colors and making some fibers, like silk hankies, easier to handle. Come with your questions about problems you’ve experienced, and we will discuss solutions and experiment with different types of handcards.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Ability to spin and ply a basic yarn. No previous handcarding experience needed.

Materials you are required to bring: A spindle or working wheel and its parts. You will need handcards for this class—some will be available to borrow.

Homework: None
