Level: All Levels Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Knitting

Elizabeth Zimmermann's Baby Surprise Jacket is a very popular and clever pattern. However, it's a challenging pattern to read, and the knitting can be a bit tricky! This class guides you through the pattern by working a mini version. Along the way you’ll learn not only how to read the pattern but also how to work the key stitches and skills required. We’ll discuss yarn choices, sizing, and ways to customize the pattern, including adding a hood or collar and working with multiple colors. NOTE: The pattern is not required for or included in the class. Students will need to buy the pattern to work the project after the class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Cast on, knit and purl

Materials you are required to bring: Light-colored scrap worsted weight yarn, and 4.5mm/US#7 needles - straight or short circular, 3 removable stitch markers or safety pins

Homework: None

In this session, we dive deep into different types of heels and toes used in socks. I’ll talk through the construction and features of 6 or 7 different types of heel turns and a variety of toe shapings, for both toe-up and top-down socks. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of each, focusing on issues of fit and wear. We’ll discuss how they can be used and adjusted to address specific fitting and size requirements, with details on building a sock from the ground up and adjusting existing patterns. Students will leave the class with a full set of templates for custom-fit heels and toes, and an expanded understanding of sock construction.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Some experience with socks

Materials you are required to bring: Light-colored scrap worsted weight yarn, and 4.5mm/US#7 needles

We'll share brilliant and math-reducing shortcuts for creating your own designs using existing templates. We’ll talk about grading and yarn choices, and we’ll provide strategies for ensuring your design appeals to as broad an audience as possible. We’ll also talk about the process of designing: yarn support, submitting to publications, and working with technical editors and test knitters. We’ll review key questions about copyright to ensure that you’re always in the clear. And we’ll spend some time on writing up your pattern for publication and how to ensure that it’s easy to understand and useful for knitters and magazine editors alike.
