Lace and fine lace yarns are perfect for delicate shawls, stoles and scarfs, but also for garments such as evening jackets and wedding dresses. These yarns can be spun as a warm lightweight woollen yarn, or a worsted spun fine lace yarn which has that perfect drape. The class will learn to identify fine fibered fleece, and perfect different preparation methods and spinning techniques for these yarns - skills which have been passed down through the generations in Shetland. With the correct quality of fleece and skills these yarns are very achievable.

Level: All Levels Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Knitting

Knitting is more than following a pattern. Firstly there is the tension swatch and maintaining that tension throughout, - then cast on’s, cast off’s, ribs, ends, seams, grafting (Kitchener st). Lastly, and often most importantly, blocking (or dressing as we say in Shetland). This class will work through aspects of knitting and finishing to perfect your skills – and make knitting more pleasurable. Then look at blocking several garments to enhance your knitted garments.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: None

Materials you are required to bring: 1 ball of light colored yarn, I ball dark colored yarn. 3 or 4 DPN’s or 1 circular in a size recommended to knit stocking st in your choice of yarn, tapestry needle, notebook, pen, pencil and eraser.

Homework: Knit 4 squares as follows - cast on 20 sts, knit 10 rows in rib, 20 rows in stocking st. Use any light colored yarn, do not cast off, leave stitches on the needle.

Level: All Levels Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Knitting

Shetland Lace uses a range of motifs, from simple to complex. These can, however, all be broken down to small elements to be more easily understood. With a few techniques used by Shetlanders, let’s de-mystify lace knitting, its charts and symbols. A kit with yarn and 2 scarf patterns, one for beginner lace knitters and one for more the experienced, will be provided. We will discuss which motifs to use where, which yarns to use, garment construction with minimal or no sewing up – and make lace knitting fun.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: None

Materials you are required to bring: 2 straight needles or 1 circular needle size 3mm or 3.25mm, tapestry needle, notebook, pencil, eraser.

Homework: None
