Level: All Levels Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Knitting

Learn eight of the most beautiful and practical cast-ons in knitting history. We’ll cover the UK’s Channel Island Cast-on, Knotted Cast-on, and Multi-Strand Cast-on. Build on two basic go-to cast-ons, the Long-Tail Cast-on and Old Norwegian Cast-on, which are the basis for two decorative cast-ons from the Twined Knitting tradition in Sweden. Finally, learn the wonderful Braided Cast-on from Finland in three colors! As a bonus, we will cover several bind-offs to practice on as you complete your swatches.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: A solid understanding of casting on, binding off, and basic color work.

Materials you are required to bring: Yarn: Three colors of worsted weight yarn, about 2 oz. each. Needles: Size 7 or 8 (4.5 or 5.0 mm) needles (can be straight, dpns, or circular). Optional: 8 hang tags to mark the different samples.

Homework: None

Level: Intermediate Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Knitting

Learn the fascinating Swedish technique of Tvåändsstickning, or twined knitting, by creating one of a pair of fingerless mitts. Working in the round, the techniques covered include twine knitting, twine purling, the crook stitch, the "O" stitch, reading a chart, the Chain Path, the twined knitted increase, an asymmetrical thumb gusset, and traditional motifs. Optionally, you may add the Herringbone Braid..

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Must be comfortable with double pointed needles, Magic Loop, or working with two circulars. Ability to knit English style is very helpful, but not required.

Materials you are required to bring: Yarn: Around 4 oz. light-colored worsted-weight yarn for two mitts. Yarn MUST be wound into a center pull ball. 1 oz. contrasting yarn of the same weight for cast on and edge finish. Note: No single ply yarns! Four ply yarns show the textures best. Heathers and fuzzy yarns obscure the patterns; Needles: One set of 7" long (or shorter) double pointed needles, size US 6 (4mm); Extras: Tapestry needle and stitch markers, waste yarn for holding stitches, magnetic board or sticky notes for keeping one's place on the chart.

Homework: Main color yarn MUST be wound into a center pull ball with the two ends accessible before class.

Level: Intermediate Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Knitting

Students will learn how to construct a Gansey, an iconic sweater style prevalent in the 19th century and early part of the 20th century among the fishermen of the British Isles. You will knit a small-scale sweater using traditional construction techniques including the classic Channel Island Cast-on, split welts, seam stitches, traditional knit/purl patterns, the underarm gusset, the perpendicular shoulder join, picked-up sleeves, and three choices for the collar. We will also explore alternative methods to these techniques.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Students must be comfortable working with DPNS, Magic Loop, or 2 circulars.

Materials you are required to bring: 3 oz. plain-textured, solid, light-colored worsted weight yarn; set of four or five 7" long (shorter is OK) dp needles, US size 5 (3.75mm) and US size 7 (4.5mm); Optional: 11 1/2" or 12" circular needle US size 4.5 mm, st markers, waste yarn, sticky notes or magnetic board to aid in reading the chart. (If you like using the Magic Loop or 2 circulars, bring the appropriate needle.)
