For your convenience, we've compiled general information about visiting United Way Worldwide and the Washington, DC area (specifically the Mary M. Gates Learning Center at the United Way Worldwide office in Alexandria, Virginia). This information is subject to change and does not reflect arrangements which are made for each specific program hosted in this building. Please refer to your confirmation materials and the course description for specific information (and contacts) related to your program. 

Air Travel

The Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is closest to Alexandria, VA, and is only about 15 minutes from any of the hotels listed. Two other airports, Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) in Maryland and Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Virginia, sometimes offer significantly lower fares. Each of these airports is approximately an hour drive from Alexandria, VA, and requires use of a shuttle service, taxicab, rental car or public transportation. To use these airports you should check with your travel agent to arrange transportation to and from the hotel or check the following web sites:

 

Amtrak has rail stations in Alexandria, VA and Washington, DC. For fares and schedules please call 800 USA RAIL (800-872-7245) or visit their web site.
Ground Transportation

LYFT

TAXIS
Cab fares from Dulles and BWI average about $60, and cabs from Reagan National are about $15. The Super Shuttle, which is less costly than a cab, operates out of both Dulles and BWI. Super Shuttles operate on a shared-ride, on-demand basis. For information, call 1-800-BLUEVAN (1-800-258-3826). All local airports require approved taxi services to pick up at designated TAXI STANDS outside the baggage claim area. Local Alexandria taxi services include:

 

MARC
The MARC train runs from BWI into Washington, DC’s Union Station for less than $10, Monday-Friday, 5:00 a.m.-12:00 a.m., with limited service on weekends. For more information visit their web site. From Union Station, you can take the metro into Alexandria.
METRO
The Metro subway system serves the entire Washington metropolitan area. The closest metro stop to United Way Worldwide is the Braddock Road stop on the Blue and Yellow lines, one stop south of the National Airport stop at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. It is about a half hour walk from this Metro stop. You may also catch a cab or take a local bus (DASH bus AT4 heading south to Hunting Towers comes within a few blocks of UWW; visit their website).

BUS
The 5A Metro Express Bus runs from Dulles to the Rosslyn Metro station, stopping only once or twice along the way. It can be faster than driving since it utilizes express lanes and avoids tolls. Upon reaching the Rosslyn station, take metro’s Blue Line in the direction of Franconia Springfield directly to the Braddock Road metro station. Fare for the entire trip is $5- 8 with an estimated travel time from Dulles to the Braddock Road station of 1.5 hours. The B30 Metro Express bus runs nonstop from BWI Airport to the Greenbelt metro station. Transfer to the Yellow Line at L’Enfant Plaza (on the same platform) and arrive at the Braddock Road Metro station. Fare for the entire trip is $7-10 with an estimated travel time from BWI to the Braddock Road station of 1.5 hours. Please remember to bring cash for the bus fare.
