About Climate Change Services Australia

There is an increasing demand for practical solutions and clear implementation pathways for climate change responses, worldwide.

Climate Change Services Australia was established to promote and share skills and experiences, facilitate strategic government and business relationships.

We are a non-profit company, dedicated to the sharing of Australian expertise that help communities to prosper in a changing climate. Founded in South Australia, we are building a network of people with world-leading capability in policies, programs, products and business services, and the knowledge built through developing climate change solutions.

What are Climate Change Services?

Climate change services refers to those organisations whose focus is:

  • assisting the community to thrive and prosper and self-direct their local responses to climate changes (climate adaptation)
  • activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, in line with the world’s efforts to halt global warming due to human activity (climate mitigation)

Australian services and methodologies are highly applicable worldwide.

  • The approaches are flexible and adaptive, providing decision-making tools to people whose livelihoods depend on climate and weather patterns.
  • Planning and action arise from collaborations of diverse groups.
  • Decision-making is informed by accurate data and forecasts from research.
  • The decisions around climate resilience become ‘owned’ by the community – from energy to agriculture and emergency preparedness.

About Climate Funds and Finance

There are various multilateral climate change funds available for use by developing countries to reduce emissions and build climate resilience.  Many developing countries require considerable assistance in accessing funding from these sources, including developing implementable plans and feasible project proposals.  Australian climate change services practitioners are potentially well placed to assist countries, or develop programs of assistance for participating countries. The conference is seeking to bring together representatives from development funds and multilateral banks.

Green Climate Fund

The Fund is a unique global initiative to respond to climate change by investing into low-emission and climate-resilient development. GCF was established by 194 governments to limit or reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries, and to help adapt vulnerable societies to the unavoidable impacts of climate change. Given the urgency and seriousness of the challenge, the Fund is mandated to make an ambitious contribution to the united global response to climate change. The fund to date manages USD 10.1 billion under management, having committed 2.2. billion to 43 projects. Australia is a donor to the fund under the Paris climate agreement.

Adaptation Fund

The Adaptation Fund finances projects and programmes that help vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt to climate change. Initiatives are based on country needs, views and priorities. The Adaptation Fund was established under the Kyoto Protocol of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and has committed US$ 438 million in 67 countries since 2010 to climate adaptation and resilience activities.

Clean Technology Fund

The $5.8 billion Clean Technology Fund (CTF)is empowering transformation in developing and emerging economies by providing resources to scale up low carbon technologies with significant potential for long-term greenhouse gas emissions savings. Over $3.8 billion (66 percent of CTF resources) is approved and under implementation in clean technologies such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean transport. This is expected to leverage another $38 billion in co-financing.

Special Climate Fund

The Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) was established in response to guidance from the Conference of the Parties (COP7) in Marrakech in 2001. The SCCF complements the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF). Unlike the LDCF, the SCCF is open to all vulnerable developing countries. In addition, it funds a wider range of activities related to climate change.  Adaptation is the top priority. But the SCCF also funds, through separate financing windows, technology transfer, mitigation in selected sectors including: energy, transport, industry, agriculture, forestry and waste management; and economic diversification.

GEF Trust Fund

The GEF administers several trust funds and provides secretariat services, on an interim basis, for the Adaptation Fund. The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Trust Fund was established on the eve of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, to help tackle our planet’s most pressing environmental problems. GEF funding to support the projects is contributed by donor countries. These financial contributions are replenished every four year.  The funds have been provided by the GEF 39 donor countries. GEF funds are available to developing countries and countries with economies in transition to meet the objectives of the international environmental conventions and agreements.  Eighteen institutions act as GEF Agencies, who propose projects and manage them on the ground.
