5th Annual Jefferson Infertility Counseling Conference


CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION

Back by popular demand! Join us for the 5th Annual Jefferson Infertility Counseling Conference in Philadelphia, PA, designed specifically for infertility counseling and sponsored by the Thomas Jefferson University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Clinicians face ever-increasing challenges in infertility and fertility counseling due to the continual advances in assisted reproductive technologies and their associated psychological, ethical and legal issues.  Day 1 is a dual track family building program focusing on fundamental concepts in reproductive medicine with an emphasis on professional documentation.  Track 1 offers skills training with theory.  Track 2 offers advanced topics including testing issues and oncofertility.  Days 2 and 3 provide advanced interprofessional and ethics training for all attendees, and will include lectures, "real life" cases, and live interactive "psychology lab" with actors.

*Describe counseling approaches and challenges for third party parenting psychoeducation
*Discuss the integration of testing and the clinical interview
*Explain the psychological issues pertaining to working with transgender individuals and couples in their family building process

*Recognize the legal issues and challenges for families of ART, gamete donation, and surrogacy
*Identify the potential psychiatric issues and treatment approaches for women pursuing ART
*Describe the embryologist's role of the ART laboratory and their unique psychosocial challenges

At the conclusion,  participants should be able to:
*Identify the psychosocial and legal issues of counseling with intrafamilial gamete donation
*Explain the ethical implications of culture and other sociological factors in ART
*Develop ethical problem solving strategies for working with ART families.

Use and Interpretation of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) in Reproductive Medicine Workshop

At the conclusion, participants should be able to:
*Describe the unique advantages of the PAI for psychological assessment of individuals in reproductive medicine and fertility counseling settings.
*List three types of respondent behavior that affect the accuracy of PAI results.
*Describe three strategies for evaluating defensiveness of individual respondents.
*This is an optional session that will be held at Thomas Jefferson University at an additional cost.
