Dr. Anand Khakhar is presently a Senior Consultant Liver Transplant & Hepatobiliary Surgery and Program Director for the Liver Transplant program at the Centre for Liver Disease & Transplantation, Apollo Hospitals at Chennai, Hyderabad & Bengaluru.

At Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, he has established state-of-the-art infrastructure geared towards undertaking successful liver transplant, complex liver, hepatobiliary & pancreatic surgery. He undertakes both living donor liver transplant as well as cadaveric liver transplant.

He completed his MBBS, M.S. (Master of Surgery) & DNB (Diplomat of National Board) (super-specialization – GU Surgery). He was awarded an international scholarship from 'SIU' to undertake multi-organ transplantation surgery.

He underwent an American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) accredited Fellowship in Liver & Multi-organ transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at the University of Western Ontario (2001-2003). He undertook a second ASTS accredited Fellowship at the University Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC) (2004 & 2005) where he focused on Living Donor Liver Transplantation, Pancreas transplantation & laparoscopic liver surgery. Here he worked with Professor Dr Thomas E Starzl who performed the world's first liver transplantation and is considered a 'Father' of Liver Transplantation in the world. In Pittsburgh he also worked with Dr. Amadeo Marcos, who is a pioneer in Living Donor Liver Transplantation and has performed the largest number of living donor liver transplants in USA. Pittsburgh is the largest volume liver transplant program both in terms of cadaveric liver transplantation as well as living donor liver transplants in USA. Here, Dr. Khakhar was trained in advanced transplant immunology including the 'transplant tolerance'.

After his fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, he was appointed as a 'Clinical Instructor' in Liver transplantation, Multi-organ transplantation and Hepatobiliary surgery at the Columbia University Medical Centre in New-York city. Here he worked with Dr Jean Emond who is a pioneer in Paediatric Liver Transplantation. Dr. Emond and colleagues (Dr. CE Broelsch) pioneered Living donor Liver Transplantation for children, in the late 1980s. Here he also worked with Dr. Lloyd Ratner who performed the world's first laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. Dr. Khakhar worked at Columbia University for 18 months as a 'Clinical Instructor' in transplant and hepatobiliary surgery before returning to India.

During his Fellowship at Canada, Pittsburgh (USA) & as a 'Clinical Instructor' at Columbia University in New-York, DrKhakhar cared for hundreds of pre-and post-abdominal organ transplant patients, and performed more than 250 Liver transplants of which he was the primary surgeon for more than 120 liver transplants, and a vast number of kidney, pancreas and multi-visceral abdominal organ transplants. He has been awarded several research grants during his stay in North America, has published several peer reviewed original research articles and has written textbook chapters.

International Experience:

• Accredited Fellowship with ASTS (American Society of Transplant Surgeons) in Liver & Multi-organ transplantation & Hepatobiliary Surgery in 2003. 

• Worked with Prof. Dr. Thomas E Starzi (Father of Liver Transplant), who performed the first transplantation in the world. 

• Worked with Dr Amadeo Marcos, who is a pioneer in Living Donor Liver Transplantation in USA. 

• Clinical Instructor - Liver transplantation, Multi-organ transplantation & Hepatobiliary surgery at the Columbia University Medical Center, New-York for 18 months.  

• Worked with Dr Lloyd Ratner, who performed the world’s first laparoscopic donor nephrectomy.
