Fundamentals, skills, and techniques covered:
• Sawing
  • Fitting and soldering a bezel
  • Stone setting




Make a stunning pendant that features a set stone. Learn a variety of essential metalsmiting skills, including sawing a metal shape using a jeweler's saw, creating a shadowbox effect using square wire and setting a cabochon stone. Students will use copper in class to create their pieces. Students will leave class with 1-2 finished pendants. You WILL complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Students should have some soldering and metalworking experience

Materials you are required to bring: Bench block, chasing hammer, round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, flush wire cutters, Half-round 4 cut metal file, metal shears.

  • Basic metalsmithing techniques




Based on the unique sampler section in Kate's bestselling book, Simple Soldering, students learn a variety of basic soldering techniques in class. Class begins with a comprehensive discussion on torches, safety and creating a home studio soldering set up. Next, students jump into the world of metalwork and complete a series of sampler projects incorporating basic metalsmithing techniques including soldering, texturing, sawing, riveting, and stone setting. After completing this fast-paced class, students will be ready to move on to more complex projects with confidence. Everything you need to know to get started or to hone your technique, it's all covered right here! You WILL NOT complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: This class is appropriate for beginners and students who want to refresh their soldiering skills

Make a ring fit for a queen! Learn to fabricate a ring featuring a set stone, and decorative elements. Students will design and create their unique piece from start to finish. Choose from a variety of stones, pre-stamped blanks, as well as making hand-fabricated elements. We will be working in sterling silver. This class is for students who have had some soldering experience. You WILL complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Students should be familiar with basic metalsmithing techniques and torches

Materials you are required to bring: Metal ring mandrel, bench block, chasing hammer, chain nose pliers, flush wire cutters, metal shears, metal file.

Tube set stones add a sleek sparkle to jewelry designs. In this class, students create a variety of rings from thin to thick bands and then learn the simple steps to embellishing the pieces with tube set stones. This class is perfect for the student who has had some metal jewelry making experience and wants to advance their skills with a new technique. You WILL  complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Students should have a basic understanding of soldering techniques

Materials you are required to bring: Chasing hammer, bench block, safety glasses or other eye protection, flush cutter, chain nose pliers, metal ring mandrel.
