Technique: Stone Setting - Cabochon

Fundamentals, skills, and techniques covered:
• Stone setting

Ever wonder what to do with that beautiful, odd-shaped stone? Ever wanted to set a beautiful stone with a natural edge but didn’t know how? This is the class for you! And you’ll put your design skills to use in this unique class. Students will learn how to make prongs from wire and soldering them down. You’ll learn how to integrate prongs and partial bezels to set a stone with a natural edge. You’ll also get to make rain drops and learn how to solder them on so they DON’T fall off. You’ll dome a disk and insert it into a hole, you’ll drill in your cabochon and learn how to set a small 6mm cab as well as proper stamping techniques and various texturing techniques and finishing. You WILL complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Silver soldering, filing, sawing, texturing

Materials you are required to bring: Cabochon with at least one natural side (Instructor will have some for sale at time of class), bench block, rawhide mallet, files, scribe (awl), straight edge, Jeweler’s saw w/#2/0 blades, Sharpie, bench pin, Jewelers saw w/#2/0 blades, diagonal cutting pliers. Also, if possible, cross lock tweezers. Suggested but not required: stamps, brass brush, texturing hammers, brass mallet, burnisher (bezel pusher), and round mandrel pliers (like Wubber’s).

Chisel & cut a thick bezel
  • Silver soldering
  • Sawing

Finally, a Tell-All class about making a ring and setting a cabochon! De-mystify silver soldering and stone setting. This class will boost your confidence in using a torch and creating beautiful rings you can be proud of. Students will learn silver soldering, how to make a stamped and cut bezel, bezel setting, how to pick cabochons, sweat soldering, proper stamping techniques, various texturing techniques and finishing.You WILL  complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Soldering, filing, and sawing

Materials you are required to bring: Cabochon (Instructor will have some for sale at time of class), bench block, rawhide mallet, files, scribe (awl), straight edge, Jeweler’s saw w/#2/0 blades, Sharpie, and bench pin. Suggested but not required: ring mandrel, stamps, texturing hammers, hole punch pliers, Brass mallet, and burnisher (bezel pusher).

• Piercing & Sawing
  • Sweat soldering
  • Filing

In this workshop, you'll learn how to pierce, saw and get a chance to really hone your skills. You'll also learn how to sweat solder two large pieces of silver together, and how to finish your piece. You WILL complete this project.


Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Sawing and sweat soldering

Materials you are required to bring: Bench pin, jeweler's saw w/#2/0 blades (lots!) Jeweler's file, needle file set, bench block, rawhide mallet. Suggested but not required: 400 grit sand paper, bracelet mandrel, texture hammers, and stamps

  • Tube setting

Ever wonder how they got that stone to stay on top of another stone? That’s what you’re going to learn as you make this one-of-a-kind pendant. Students will learn: Silver soldering, how to drill stones, how to set small cabochons and how to set a cabochon on top of a cabochon. You’ll also learn tube setting, various texturing techniques and finishing. You WILL complete this project in class.
