This fast-paced one-day workshop will have you cutting, stamping, soldering and forming sterling silver wire and sheet into a one-of-a-kind setting for a gorgeous, chunky free-form stone. You’ll learn how to size and solder a ring band, create a bezel from scratch, and set a stone using age-old techniques with a modern twist to create a one-of-a-kind statement ring. If you’re interested in taking your metalsmithing skills to the next level, this is a don’t-miss workshop. Absolutely everything necessary to complete the project is provided in this workshop – all tools, materials, and equipment! Bring a pen and notebook for note-taking and eye magnification if required, but otherwise leave the big bags at home and just come and have fun! (Please note: Some prior soldering experience will be helpful but is not required if you are a confident beginner. Just be aware that without prior soldering experience, you may not be able to finish your project in class.)You WILL  complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Some prior torch soldering experience

Materials you are required to bring: Please bring a battery-powered task light and eye magnification if you have had trouble seeing well in past workshops. Otherwise, everything else is provided!

Fundamentals, skills, and techniques covered:
• Stone setting

  • Bezel making

This two day workshop was created to give you a comprehensive introduction to essential metalsmithing techniques. You'll start by creating two different charms from sterling silver sheet, each one adorned with a different stone. The first will show you how to use widely available calibrated cabochons and machine-made bezel cups; the second will show you how to measure and create your own bezel based on the stone you choose. You'll create texture using a rolling mill, hammers and stamps, and learn how to size and measure bangles so they fit perfectly every time. You'll learn to cut and alter tubing to capture your bangle trio and how to securely set your stones. You'll finish up with an introduction to the best and safest practices for using a flexshaft to finish and polish your pieces. If you're working in a home studio and you want to make the leap into metalsmithing, this is the workshop for you! You WILL  complete this project in class.

Love stones? Love metal? Working in a small home studio? In just one day, you’ll learn a super-simple soldering method that will allow you to do it all in a small space and with a minimum of tools and equipment. You’ll design a beautiful pendant using a unique, one-of-a-kind freeform stone as your guide. Use hand-crafted stamps and lining tools to add personalized marks and interest. Finish by setting the stone and adding a simple pinch bail to hang it from your favorite chain – you’ll be amazed at how much you can learn in just one day! And best of all, you’ll do it all with a small, easy-to-use culinary butane torch! (If you are a more advanced student, you will have the opportunity to create a handmade pinch bail if time permits.)Absolutely everything necessary to complete the project is provided in this workshop – all tools, materials, and equipment! In addition, you’ll receive a handout covering how to set up a basic home soldering station, complete with Francesca’s preferred suppliers and resources. You WILL  complete this project in class.

This two-for-one workshop introduces you to two very different metals techniques that - when combined - produce gorgeous, unusual results. We'll start with roll printing, the process of using a rolling mill to impress pattern and texture into sheet metal using a variety of materials, including some you'll make yourself! Then we'll use our new skills to create patterned silver sheet for earrings or pendants and apply real 24k gold using an ancient Korean process known as keum boo. You can choose to make your piece rustic or more refined - this versatile technique allows for a wide range of personal expression. If you're interested in adding outside-the-box processes to your jewelry-making toolbox, this is the workshop for you! You WILL  complete this project in class.
