Beginner Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Annealing,Coloring Metal,Design,Fold Forming,Hot Connection,Metalsmithing,Metalwork,Mixed Materials,Patina,Silversmithing,Soldering,Tool Instruction,Torchwork

Fundamentals, skills, and techniques covered:
How to use a butane and propane torch
  How to fold form copper
  • How to make fine silver granulation

I recently came across a gorgeous copper and silver granulation bracelet I just had to figure out how to make. After many trials and errors and a lot of research, I ended up developing my own way of affixing fine silver granulation to a copper base to create it. I think you’ll agree that this is a technique you’ll want to add to your jewelry making repertoire and that this is a bracelet you just have to have to add to your collection of jewelry treasures. We will be using a butane torch to create fine silver granulation (small balls of silver) and a propane torch to permanently adhere the shiny silver balls to this impressive cuff. I’ll supply you with some design suggestions, or you can create your own. You will be shown how to easily create lovely little spheres of fine silver and how to attach them to your cuff. As a bonus, you will also be shown how to make simple fold forms in copper to corral those little granulated spheres so they won’t roll all over the place while you’re putting the flame to them! After your creation is complete, you’ll add a patina and polish your cuff to a delicious warm shine, with the silver contrasting beautifully to the copper. So, let’s get together to happily hammer, torch and torture metal to do our bidding. The end result will be something you will proudly wear and show off. All materials and equipment will be provided, so there is nothing additional to bring...You WILL complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Must be at least 17 years old, willing to use a propane torch, be capable of using a hammer.

Materials you are required to bring: None

As artists we try to achieve color, unusual textures and patterns in our jewelry designs. This class has it all! You will learn how to make a necklace with a technique I call faux reticulation. The hills, valleys and swirls achieved with this process reminds me of a fresh lava flow. Everyone I’ve shared this technique with has marveled at the gorgeous, almost instantaneous results they get after trying it.In this class you will learn how to use silver scraps to make amazing texture and patterns on a copper base, and how to add fantastic flame painted colors to your pieces. All this can be achieved using a propane torch or a small butane torch, known in cooking circles as a crème brulee torch.
