8:15 am - 9:00 amIT Leadership in Cybersecurity: A Fireside Chat with the CIO of General Dynamics
Woody Hall, VP of IT Strategy & CIO, General Dynamics Information Technology
As the CIO of General Dynamics’ largest and fastest-growing IT division, Woody Hall recently took charge of all cybersecurity operations for the $32 billion military contractor, a primary supplier to the Pentagon with 70% of its sales coming from the federal sector. “Security really needs to be integral part of how you engineer the infrastructure because it needs to evolve so quickly now,” he explains. As a cabinet-level federal CIO for 10 of his 32 years in IT, Woody brings a unique private/public sector perspective to the evolving conversation about IT security and the role of the CIO in protecting the business and positioning it for growth. In this lively Q&A with CIO’s Editor in Chief, he’ll talk about the thinking behind the security shift and other significant trends in private clouds, desktop virtualization, unified communication and collaboration. He’ll also discuss the leadership skills that travel well between federal and private CIO jobs.
9:00 am - 9:45 amIn Plain Sight: IT Transformation at the US Marshals Service
Lisa Davis, CIO, US Marshals
As the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency, the U.S. Marshals Service has a multifaceted crime-fighting mission that inspires real-life drama in the “Manhunters” TV series and entertaining story lines about the witness protection program in the "In Plain Sight" TV show. But four years ago, its IT operations were antiquated and inadequate. So a significant transformation initiative was launched in 2008 under then-new CIO Lisa Davis, who overhauled the technology strategy, improved the technology-mission alignment and led significant modernization efforts to create a more customer-focused IT organization. In this insightful session packed with practical advice and ideas, Lisa will talk about the key elements of the transformation, including how she gained leadership support and guided the division through significant change against a backdrop of severe fiscal constraint. She'll also discuss important success factors, unexpected challenges and course corrections that led to some valuable lessons learned on her division's journey to becoming a valued business partner within the Marshals Service.

9:45 am - 10:15 amAccelerating Industry and Government Collaboration on Cybersecurity
Maryfran Johnson, Editor in Chief, CIO magazine & events
Bob Dix, VP Government Affairs and Critical Infrastructure, Juniper Networks
Steve Shirley, Executive Director, Cyber Crime Center, Department of Defense

Technology professionals across the Federal government and industry are answering the Obama Administration's call to make cyberspace protection a primary national security priority. Across the nation, CEOs and private industry leaders are increasingly aware that cyber security isn’t just “a government problem,” but one requiring a seamlessly integrated response from government and industry. Government and Industry collaboration in cyber defense protection must play a major role in growing the nation’s awareness of cyber security solutions, which must be jointly designed and deployed. Championing truly open, collaborative solutions to information sharing and joint decision making is essential in all of this. In this Q&A interview with CIO’s Editor in Chief, Juniper’s leading expert on critical infrastructure protections will discuss how IT leaders can help ensure the country continues to build its protection, preparedness, and resiliency to cyber attacks on our information and communications networks.
10:15 am - 10:45 amNetworking Break
10:45 am - 11:30 amRebranding The CIO as Business Strategist
Nitin Pradhan, CIO, US Department of Transportation
When CIOs think like business strategists, they stop managing technology projects and start seeing products instead. That vision of CIOs “productizing” and branding technology work is a driving force in the way CIO Nitin Pradhan leads his IT organization within the U.S. Dept. of Transportation. “People too often perceive IT as technology labor only,” he notes. “You have to elevate IT to something providing business value.” In this inspiring session, Nitin will share his out-of-the-box thinking and advice on everything from IT investment management and productizing/branding tech initiatives to driving innovation and entrepreneurship within the IT group, generating business value and expanding the business role of the CIO.
11:30 am - 12:00 pmThe CIO Collaboration Paradox
Stephen J. Gold, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Avaya
Communications and collaboration are a major challenge for today’s CIOs, largely because the devices and user experiences tend to fall short of what enterprise workers need in easy-to-use tools to help them connect, communicate and collaborate at a moment’s notice. High-end telepresence solutions are too expensive for most companies. Low-tech document sharing only goes so far. Neither offer the increased productivity and process efficiency of seamless integration across video, instant messaging, screen and document sharing, email and web. In this industry expert session, you’ll hear about the changing face of business collaboration and how the directions emerging in this field can help CIOs fuel corporate innovation and growth.

Kevin Kern, EVP & CTO, Global Operations and Technology, First Data

As the world’s largest electronic payments processor, $10.4 billion First Data operates in a complex, highly regulated industry, serving more than 5 million merchants and 2,000 card issuers in nearly three dozen countries. The company has set an aggressive goal to generate an additional $1 billion in EBITDA by 2013 while also ensuring it remains the most safe, secure and reliable transaction processor in the world. In this fascinating look inside an industry leader, EVP & CTO Kevin Kern will talk about the progress of this transformation-in-process, discussing IT’s central role in handling increasing regulatory scrutiny, growing threats to data security and the need to self-fund all technology investments.

2:00 pm - 2:30 pmOperate & Innovate on a Dime
Andrew Schroepfer, Vice President of Strategy, Rackspace Hosting

Cloud technologies are creating an inflection point where many enterprises must at least consider hosting alternatives for even the most mission-critical websites and applications. And while cloud may be available for everyone, it is not the best choice for everything. In this breakout session, Rackspace Hosting will demystify the cloud by sharing how enterprise customers are adopting cloud computing for various types of applications. Learn how a hosted solution can enable your organization’s innovation by cost-effectively overcoming the challenges of scaling, availability and performance. 2:30 pm - 3:30 pmCIO Discussion Panel: IT Consumerization, Mobility and the Cloud
Maryfran Johnson, Editor in Chief, CIO magazine & events
John Crary, CIO, American Red Cross
Dave Egbert, CIO, Markel Corporation
Robert Webb, CIO, Hilton Worldwide

A trio of mega-trends in mobility, IT consumerization and cloud computing are converging on the business technology landscape today, fast becoming a core enabler of leading-edge innovation and business value delivery. The speedy transition of cloud computing from last year’s buzzword to this year’s reality has surprised even the most skeptical CIOs. Also at play in today's enterprises are accelerating trends in mobility, as the drive to leverage new kinds of data “on the move” has a significant impact across many industries. In this panel discussion with prominent Washington DC IT leaders, you’ll hear how companies are reconsidering their technology roadmaps, serving new customer bases and responding more effectively to the demands of business in a hyper-connected online world.

3:30 pm - 4:15 pmClosing Keynote: Innovation, Agility and IT Reform at the Department of Veterans Affairs
Roger W. Baker, Asst. Secretary for Information and Technology, US Department of Veterans Affairs
As a $158 billion business with 380,000 employees -- second only in size to the Dept. of Defense -- the U.S. Veterans Administration is a behemoth among the federal agencies. The VA’s IT organization is also sweeping in size, with 7,500 technologists and an annual budget of $3.3 billion to support extensive operations in healthcare, research and veterans benefits. But it’s the size of the IT change under way at the VA that’s getting the real attention these days, prompting federal CIO Vivek Kundra to hold up the VA as a model for how technology projects should be managed across the government. VA CIO Roger Baker has earned a reputation for bringing new transparency to IT performance, deploying innovative consumer technologies, delivering on service commitments and saving millions of taxpayer dollars since his 2009 appointment. In this compelling closing keynote, Roger will talk about how he and his senior leaders are changing the IT culture at the VA in the face of tremendous budget pressures.
