Love stones? Love metal? Working in a small home studio? In just one day, you'll learn a super-simple soldering method that will allow you to do it all in a small space and with a minimum of tools and equipment. You'll design a beautiful pendant using a unique, one-of-a-kind freeform stone as your guide. Create awesome, smooth sterling silver balls from scrap to embellish your piece and use hand-crafted stamps and lining tools to add personalized marks and interest. Finish by setting the stone and adding a simple pinch bail to hang it from your favorite chain - you'll be amazed at how much you can learn in just one day! And best of all, you'll do it all with a small, easy-to-use culinary butane torch! More advanced students will have the opportunity to create a handmade pinch bail if time permits. Absolutely everything to complete the project is provided in this workshop - all tools, materials, and equipment! In addition, students will receive a handout covering how to set up a basic home soldering station, complete with the instructor's preferred suppliers and resources. Level: All Levels Description of Workshop Levels
Technique: Metalsmithing, Metalwork, Texturing

Fundamentals, skills, and techniques covered:
• Roll printing
  • Keum Boo
  • Depletion gilding

This fun beginning workshop introduces you to two completely different metals techniques, and while each one by itself will add a new dimension to your metalworking repertoire, together they create high-impact drama on simple sheet metal. First, you'll learn how to use a rolling mill to create deep, detailed patterns on both copper and sterling silver using a variety of materials, including paper patterns. Then you'll learn the process of depletion gilding as a method of preparing sterling silver for the application of pure 24k gold foil. This ancient Korean technique, known as Keum Boo, adds the luster and warmth of real gold to your jewelry pieces for a striking and unique design element. Best of all, this technique requires only simple, inexpensive equipment and a little elbow grease to get started. Students will learn and work with the following skills and techniques: (1) Roll printing; (2) Depletion gilding; (3) Keum Boo (applying 24k gold to silver); (4) Creating handmade earwires. You WILL  complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: None - beginners welcome!

Materials you are required to bring: All tools and materials are included! Students must bring the following: a free-standing battery-operated task light; eye magnification (if required); paper and pen for note-taking.
