What are the Pre-Conference Activities?

The Pre-Conference activities are optional events to help supplement your conference experience. Currently, we are offering a choice of 4 field trips and one Pre-Conference.

Field Trips:
Utah Aerospace Pathways
The Utah Aerospace Pathways program provides high school students with the opportunity to graduate with a certificate in aerospace manufacturing and to begin an aerospace manufacturing career. Students also participate in a paid internship during their senior year. The partnership includes K-12, Salt Lake Community College and several industry partners, including Boeing. On this field trip you'll learn how the program came to fruition and the impact it's having on the aerospace industry. Cost $35

Silicon Slopes
Travel to Lehi's 'Silicon Slopes' to visit Utah's cluster of hundreds of information technology, software development, and hardware manufacturing firms and learn about Utah's Information Tech Pathways program. The trip will include a panel presentation with representatives from various IT firms and a tour of Adobe's digital marketing division's new campus. Cost $35

Utah Diesel Technician Pathways
In response to projections of more than 2,000 vacancies in well-paid jobs along the Wasatch Front, the Utah Diesel Technician Pathways program is designed to provide students a direct pathway from high school and college to the workforce. During this field trip you will hear from representatives of Canyons School District, Salt Lake Community College and two major industry partners (Cummins Rocky Mountain and Komatsu Equipment Corporation.) Join us as we tour facilities that house millions of dollars of tools and equipment and state-of-the-art technology including 3,500 horsepower engines and 100-ton haul trucks. Cost $35

Pre-Conference Workshop:
Developing a College and Career Pathways System
To develop a local or regional Pathways System, leaders from education, business and community-based organizations come together to explore and build common vision and action strategies for career-connected learning. During this special pre-conference workshop, Hans Meeder from the National Center for College and Career Transitions (NC3T.com) will help you understand the essential tools and processes to get a pathways initiative started or re-booted. This session focuses on identifying the six key components of a pathways system, uncovering local assets and gaps, assessing regional workforce needs, forming a community-wide leadership structure, framing a comprehensive career development model, creating meaningful pathway programs of study, engaging the business community, and developing an actionable phase-by-phase plan for implementation. There will also be a special section of the workshop devoted to state leadership policy and strategies to foster and support local pathways coalitions. Attendees also receive a free copy of Mr. Meeder’s book, The Power and Promise of Pathways. Cost $50

What is a State Team?

State Teams work collectively and collaboratively to develop a State Action Plan for improving education and workforce development. These plans must be realistic and achievable and will be revisited in future conferences to check on progress made. State Team Members are key stakeholders in the state, including, but not limited to, leaders from chambers of commerce, workforce boards, universities, community colleges, Governor’s staff, Education Committee Chairs, industry associations, school districts, foundations, nonprofits, etc. State Teams coordinate prior to the Conference, develop their State Action Plan during the Conference, and maintain momentum after the Conference by working together to implement the action items. How do I become a State Team Member? You can sign up on the Global Pathways Institute website or be recruited by a State Team Leader.
