2017 Cities United

On behalf of the Cities United advisory board and leadership team, we invite you to participate in the 4th Annual Cities United Convening hosted by Mayor Betsy Hodges and the City of Minneapolis. This important event is made possible by the generous support from Casey Family Programs, The Langeloth Foundation and other local and national partners.

On the news and in our own communities we are reminded of the urgent need to take action to ensure all of our children, especially our African American young men and boys are growing up in communities that are safe, healthy and hopeful. In light of the spike in homicides and shootings across the country in 2015 and 2016, we recognize the sense of urgency mayors and other community leaders are feeling to design comprehensive strategies and plans to reverse this trend.

With this in mind, the 4th Annual Cities United Convening will provide coaching and capacity building strategies to cities committed to making sure African American young men and boys and their families are living in communities that are safe, healthy and hopeful. Mayors and their teams will engage in peer-to-peer learning on topics ranging from creating an inclusive economy, 21st public safety, trauma informed care and collaborative change.

In addition, there will be opportunities for city teams to work towards aligning their Cities United efforts with other important local and national initiatives in which they may be involved.

We strongly encourage mayors to assemble teams that include a local Cities United representative, a youth delegate, a community or faith leader, a public safety representative and a representative from a local foundation. Cities in attendance will receive a stipend of $1,500 for travel costs.

Each person planning to attend must register by Tuesday, August 1, 2017 by clicking on the New Registration button above right. All members of each city team must register.

We look forward to you and your team joining us in Minneapolis as we move forward toward creating communities where our African American young men and boys are safe, healthy and hopeful.
