2014 Assets Learning Conference

Community Wealth Building in Native American Communities

Friday, September 19th, 2014
10:15-11:45 AM

Room: Salon 15

Beginning in July 2013, the Democracy Collaborative, in partnership with the Northwest Area Foundation, launched an intensive "Learning Action Lab" that aimed to help six Native American groups—three urban and three reservation-based—develop community wealth-building strategies, focused on developing employee-owned businesses and social enterprises tailored to the needs of their communities. Panelists in this session will provide an overview of highlights of the first year of this project—both the challenges and successes—and will also discuss how to apply the lessons learned to comprehensive community economic development and asset building in other communities.

  • Justin Huenemann, Northwest Area Foundation
  • Sarah McKinley, The Democracy Collaborative
  • Nick Tilsen, Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation
  • Steve Dubb, The Democracy Collaborative (Moderator)
