2014 Assets Learning Conference

Bringing People Closer to Opportunity through Transportation Equity

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014
10:15 - 11:45 AM

Room: Union Station

Transportation equity is essential to enduring asset building and wealth creation, especially in low-income minority communities. Access to affordable and reliable transportation expands opportunity and helps combat poverty and unemployment, and can provide access to education and essential services. However, current transportation spending programs do not equally benefit all communities and populations. Furthermore, the negative effects of some transportation decisions—such as the disruption of low-income neighborhoods—are broadly felt, stunt economic development and asset building, and have long-lasting negative impacts. This session will tackle these issues head-on and offer policy interventions and programmatic solutions that bring or keep people closer to opportunity.
