GII has developed a new manager training program to meet the specific needs of Goodwill Donated Goods/Retail (DGR) managers.  Thanks to the contributions of many throughout the membership, we are excited to announce that the program will be offered during the Summer Conference in Miami as a preconference workshop.

 

The workshop will be conducted as a train-the-trainer, with all of the content delivered by you, the participants.  You will receive the materials one month prior to the workshop and be assigned a portion of the material to deliver during the workshop in August.  Prior to the workshop, it is expected that you will work with your Donated Goods/Retail division and the material in your assigned section of the curriculum to modify it as you would if you were delivering the content to managers at your Goodwill.

 

Once the registration period has closed, registered participants will receive a roster, their assignment and further details about the workshop.

 

*Please note – there is a limit of 14 students in this class on a first come, first serve basis, limiting the space to one participant from each Goodwill. If you have a second person who you would like to have participate, please email Andrea Cole (andrea.cole@goodwill.org) to place them on a waiting list should space become available.

Any one of us can be called upon at a moment’s notice to represent our Goodwill agencies by a member of the media. Interview training is essential to communicating your key messages to the public—especially in situations that have the potential to negatively affect Goodwill’s brand and reputation. When reporters start calling about breaking news at your Goodwill agency, will you be ready? Join CommCore Communications for an all-day pre-conference session on media training and crisis communication. The all-day session will include an interactive lecture, a demonstration on techniques and discussion/Q and A. Some participants will also have on-camera interview practice. There is a limited number of slots for this session.

 

The target audience for this session is PR/communications professionals with 5 years of experience or more, executives who are called upon to conduct interviews or make presentations, and presidents/CEO/executive leaders.

Recognizing that “people will forget what you tell them, but never forget how you make them feel,” this interactive workshop will provide instruction and hands-on experience in how to harness the unique power of the web – including words, audio, images and video — to move and inspire an audience. Attendees will learn general principles and best practices for storytelling across all online media types that can demonstrate the power of your work as well as attract funders and volunteers, as well as "do it yourself" interviewing and story producing tips. The session will include several activities where participants can apply the principles they’ve learned to real-life Goodwill examples.

One group of participants will move every few minutes to start a conversation with a new person. At the end of the event, each person will have made several new contacts.

As the internet has become more central in our lives, we have begun to witness a revival of the importance of being human.  By definition of what we do, Goodwill is a caring enterprise that puts people first; our organizational culture and processes should reflect that.  Creating more human organizations is based on four core elements of being human:  open, trustworthy, generative, and courageous.  As a leader in the Goodwill enterprise it is important to balance best practices, benchmarking and competitive analysis with the more human aspects of our organization including:  systems thinking, inclusion, learning, experimentation, authenticity, personal development and more.  Jamie Notter and Maddie Grant, co-author of Humanize:  How People Centric Organizations Succeed in a Social World, will explore how the phenomena of social media has begun to transform how we think about our organizations' structure and how we show up as leaders within the structure.

Then, part 2 of the session will transition from where we are to where we’re going. With increase competition the drive to grow our national market share and the strong desire to increase number of people served, Goodwill agencies are looking to New Goods.  When done strategically, purchased product can be used to non-competitively augment donations and increase overall sales and, in turn, increase contribution to mission.  The New Goods added to your mix will help retain customers that are presently purchasing products which we can carry from our competition.  Also, with the overall agency push to increase our national market share by opening new stores and growing our donor base, the revenue gained from the sale of new goods could fund new stores, remodels of existing stores and marketing efforts to increase our donor base. This session will discuss the strategic introduction of New Goods into your mix with emphasis on categories, operations, buy in, vendors, trade shows and management.

Based on feedback from participants, we will focus on a high level presentation for developing, deploying and maintaining a disaster recovery site. This session will cover hosted vs. managed DR, determining critical and non-critical functionality/applications, hot site vs. standby, recovery points when a disaster is declared and what is an acceptable amount of downtime while in recovery mode.  Time permitting; we will also discuss a business continuity plan to ensure day to day operations can continue should the production site experience an extended outage.

GII’s Management Leadership for Tomorrow Interns will present the findings and analysis of research they have conducted this summer on Goodwill agencies’ social media participation, social media staff and budget resources, and content strategy.  The team will also look at the role of leadership commitment to social media, and compare key performance indicators from the Annual Statistical Report with social media participation.  Time for questions and answers will follow.

Learn how to staff a Total Facility Management or other contracts through utilization of the Veterans and Wounded Warrior Program. Once you’ve received your first AbilityOne TFMS contract, there are a myriad of details to deal with including staffing of these complex projects. This session will focus on development of recruiting programs targeted at skilled persons with severe disabilities including Wounded Warriors. Participants will learn how to establish referral programs with a wide variety of agencies that will help provide them with employees with a diversity of skills. The session will be conducted by Fred Smith, a GII consultant who has started up numerous AbilityOne TFMS contracts, and John Oliver, principal at Employment Diversity Resource Consultants (EDRC), a company focused on providing support to AbilityOne agencies and prime contractors in the hiring of persons with severe disabilities. Mr. Oliver has extensive experience in the recruiting of persons with severe disabilities for complex TFMS contracts across the country.

One way to advance Goodwill’s strategic initiative of strengthening business is for each Goodwill Member to improve their E/R, which can ultimately drive more money to open stores and to strengthen mission. Improved E/R can be achieved by leveraging the collective buying power of Goodwill Members. GII’s Business Development and Strategic Sourcing team works to leverage Member buying power to secure national discounts from corporations such as AT&T, Cintas and DMX.

 

Goodwill Industries of Orange County has been able to leverage their individual buying power by consolidating the number of different paper products that they purchase. They have been able to increase their leverage even further by recruiting other California Goodwill members to participate in their paper program.

 

This session will focus on the Goodwill Industries of Orange County purchasing organization, and the steps that were taken to leverage their expenditures to establish the paper program. Using Orange County’s paper program as a pilot, GII is working to establish a national paper program to make discounted paper products available to all of the Goodwill Members. An update of the status of the national program will be provided.

Properly delivered and supported best practice standards have dramatically impact performance and sales for Big Bend. The picture of a “responsible company” is at the brink of change. This two-part session focuses on external factors affecting the relationship between for-profits and non-profits and how Goodwill’s model stands to gain amidst the evolution of CSR. Social Capital Partnerships, a consultancy working with Goodwill Industries, United Way of America, American Red Cross, among many others, will present emerging trends in fundraising and marketing, while GII’s partnership team explores business development opportunities resulting from a Shared Value approach. We’ll bring the theoretical into reality with our Cintas partnership to demonstrate how local Goodwills can leverage -- and help lead -- more sustainable and profitable business partnerships.

A number of Goodwills are “on a roll” with their aftermarket programs through creative salvage and aftermarket efforts. Sustainability is a key focus area for the GII strategic plan, and many of our members have made huge strides in keeping unsold donations out of landfills while increasing revenues and creating jobs. This session will feature successful strategies including outlets, vendor management, and waste reduction case studies by members of varying sizes and geographic locations.    To support the theme of sustainability, guest speaker Jerry Powell, publisher of Resource Recycling magazine, will share his insights on current and future markets and trends for recyclable commodities while also addressing some of the challenging materials that are in the Goodwill aftermarket stream. This session is targeted toward retail VPs and Directors, as well as those who manage aftermarket businesses.

In this session we will discuss IT specific policies that need to be considered, end user security, network and server security, on-going Security Awareness training and physical security. We will also cover Security Assessments and the value they bring to the organization.

Attendees will learn how social media and online fundraising tools make it easier than ever to empower supporters, board members, staff and volunteers to reach out on your agency’s behalf. We will also discuss how you can encourage and cultivate supporter-driven fundraising with minimal staff resources.

This session directly impacts one of GII’s strategic initiatives to strengthen mission by doubling persons served and increasing placements by 10% over five years. Participants will hear from Goodwills that have more than doubled persons served and placed over the past two years, and learn the best practices that have resulted in these successes.

This session is targeted towards people who have responsibility/influence over Retail payroll, recruitment and placement including Retail, HR, WDS and Training Directors and VP’s.

As a result of this session, participants will:

  • Learn strategies to increase available training hours for consumers in Retail
  • Learn the best practices that have resulted in Eugene and Charlotte dramatic increase in Retail training hours without adversely affecting E/R
  • Gain insights on how best to approach local businesses to develop partnerships for placements of trainees
