Emily AshworthEmily Ashworth, Vice President and Chief Information Officer, American Water [Premier 100 Honoree, 2010]
Emily Ashworth is vice president and chief information officer of American Water. Ms. Ashworth is responsible for developing and implementing information technology services (ITS) strategies and transformation roadmap. Leading the ITS management team, Ms. Ashworth has day to day operational responsibility as well as responsibility for providing the vision for the future.  Ms. Ashworth has been instrumental in creating an enterprise architecture discipline, providing the vision to launch a business transformation program within American Water which fundamentally change every process and system.  

Ms. Ashworth has extensive experience in enterprise architecture development, business process re-engineering, and software selection, integration and implementation. Prior to joining American Water, Ms. Ashworth was a Partner with Computer Science Corporation’s (CSC) Consulting Group where she focused primarily on large-scale transformation programs leveraging technology and on developing and fulfilling the strategic visions of Fortune 500 companies.

She previously held positions with Pulte Homes, Westinghouse Power Generation Corporation, SuperVision International and U.S. Naval Air Warfare Systems Simulation Training Division.

Ms. Ashworth holds a bachelor’s degree in both industrial engineering and liberal studies from the University of Central Florida and a master’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Tony BenderTony Bender, Vice President and Chief Information Officer,

Tony Bender is the Chief Information Officer at Alberto Culver Company, a leading Beauty Care company within the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry. He has worked with a wide variety of food, beverage, personal care, house wares and soft goods CPG companies, along with their suppliers and retail customers. Tony is recognized as one of the leading experts in the management of Information Technology and Business Process Improvement within the consumer products industry.

Earlier in his career, Tony served as SVP & CIO for Relizon, a document management and customer communication company; VP & CIO for Dan River, a consumer bedding and towel manufacturer; Director Systems Development for Springs Industries, a consumer bedding, towel and window treatment manufacturer; and Senior Manager, Price Waterhouse, as a consulting practice leader in their Supply Chain Management Consulting Practice. Tony received his undergraduate degree at Frostburg State University in economics, and completed his graduate work in business administration at Shippensburg University.

Cora Carmody, Senior Vice President, IT, Jacobs Engineering

As the Senior Vice President, Information Technology for Jacobs Engineering, Cora Carmody provides leadership for Jacobs’ mission-critical IT Systems including Enterprise Resources systems such as HR, Financial, Operational support systems such as project control, engineering/design and collaboration, as well as infrastructure systems and services such as networks, servers, desktops, web, etc. Cora was with Litton/PRC from 1978 – 2001 (and CIO there from 1996-2001), Invensys plc from 2001-2003 and SAIC from 2003-2008.

Daniel Chan, Chief Information Officer, New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance [Premier 100 Honoree, 2010]
With his passion for helping needy families, Dan joined the New York State (NYS) Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) as the Chief Information Officer in June 2007. Under his leadership, OTDA launched the innovative myBenefits.ny.gov citizen portal in May 2008 for providing low-income families self-service Internet access to a host of economic support programs and for increasing Food Stamp enrollment by 100,000 new families. In September 2008, Dan was named the NYS Public CIO of the Year. He  currently chairs the e-Government technical committee for the NYS Broadband Council established by Governor Paterson.

Prior to joining NYS, he was the Chief Technologist at GE Energy; as a certified Six-Sigma Black Belt, he successfully applied the methodology to achieve significant cost savings and productivity gains and was awarded the GE IM Leadership Award for the accomplishments. Dan started working for Boeing shortly after graduating from MIT and contributed to various U.S. space and defense programs having received multiple NASA technology awards along the way. While working full time at Boeing, he earned a Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Southern California.

Kenneth Corless, Executive Director, Business Applications, Accenture [Premier 100 Honoree, 2010]
Kenneth (Ken) Corless is the Executive Director responsible for the majority of Accenture’s business applications and architecture, including overseeing the offshore Delivery Centers. The application team consists of more than 2,000 people around the globe in the United States, Argentina, China, Ireland, Spain, India and the Philippines. In this position, Mr. Corless has driven the organization to greater global consistency, both in application footprint as well as development processes. He has received industry accolades for his exceptional leadership, innovative approaches to business problems and effectively managed IT strategy, including being named to Computerworld magazine’s 2010 Premier 100 IT Leaders and CIO magazine’s 2009 Ones to Watch list.
 
Prior to his current role, Mr. Corless served as the Global Technology Consulting Lead for Accenture’s Products Operating Group. Mr. Corless has been with Accenture since 1987 and has worked on a number of large, complex technology consulting and outsourcing engagements including: PepsiCo, Best Buy, Toys”R”Us, Federal Express, Walgreens and Sears. Mr. Corless has extensive experience with transactional systems, web development, technical architecture and offshore development.

Mr. Corless received bachelor’s degrees both in mathematics and management science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987. He lives with his wife and four children in South Barrington, Illinois. Outside his busy family life, he enjoys most sports, gadgets and reading.

LaVerne Council, Corporate Vice President and Chief Information Officer,

As Corporate Vice President and Chief Information Officer, LaVerne H. Council oversees Johnson & Johnson’s global I/T organization. As founder and CEO of The Feld Group—based in Dallas, Texas—Feld built a team of information technology executives that enabled dramatic results in Fortune 500 companies through the transformation of their own IT organizations. The Feld Group was acquired by EDS in 2004, which was subsequently purchased by Hewlett-Packard in 2008. In September 2008, Feld retired as a senior executive vice president and member of EDS’ Executive Committee.  The Feld Group was re-launched as a Leadership Development firm in 2009.

Feld has garnered accolades from numerous sources, including Business 2.0 and Computerworld magazines. Jim Fortner is the Vice President, Information Technology Development & Operations, reporting directly to the office of the CIO. Raimund GenesRaimund Genes, Chief Technology Officer, Trend Micro
Raimund Genes brings more than 30 years of computer and network security experience to his position of Chief Technology Officer at Trend Micro. In this role, Mr. Genes is responsible for introducing new methods to detect and eradicate threats. He is responsible for a team of developers and researchers around the globe who research and develop new core technology components to protect against email, Web and file-based threats under the Smart Protection Network umbrella.

Raimund has held several executive management positions within Trend Micro including General Manager for Trend Micro’s Incubation Business, President of European Operations; European Vice President of Sales and Marketing; and Managing Director.

Raimund worked in the German air force for 12 years in radar guidance and aircraft tracking and holds a master of science in radar guidance from the German Air Force Academy. He is also a Certified Network Engineer.

Jack GustafsonJack Gustafson, Director, Enterprise Data Warehouse in Business Intelligence, DIRECTV
Jack Gustafson is responsible for implementing and maintaining the data modeling, data integration, ETL development and database performance for the enterprise data warehouse.   Jack started with DIRECTV in 2003 and has successfully implemented GoldenGate with Teradata to provide DIRECTV the ability to make operational decisions in a much faster timeframe.  Jack has previously worked at Universal Music as the manager of the Data Warehouse environment, as well as at Red Brick and Informix as a Senior Consultant.

R. Keith Halbert, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, United Airlines
Keith Halbert is senior vice president and chief information officer for United Airlines. He is based at United's operations center in suburban Chicago.

Halbert joined United in January 2008 and is responsible for the effective implementation and management of technology solutions to support all aspects of United's businesses and programs.

Before joining United, Halbert was vice president and CIO of Electronic Data Systems (EDS). At EDS, Halbert led the company's digital transformation efforts and implemented a three-year IT transformation plan that consistently improved the company's performance and reduced operating expenses. Prior to joining EDS, Halbert served as managing director of knowledge management for the Feld Group, Inc., a privately held technology management consultancy acquired by EDS. While at Feld, Halbert held a number of leadership positions, including a three-year role as senior vice president and chief development officer for Delta Airlines, where he developed and implemented applications and infrastructure to support Delta’s customer experience, revenue management, airline operations and enterprise shared services business strategies. Additionally at Feld, Halbert served for two years as senior vice president and chief development officer for First Data Resources, where he developed and led a multi-year IT transformation effort focused on restructuring legacy systems to improve client service. He also served in a one-year role as senior vice president and chief development officer for Home Depot, where he developed and led their IT transformation initiative.

Wyllstyne D. Hill is the vice president of Information Technology and chief information officer at Raytheon Missile Systems. In this position, she leads a complex IT environment supporting more than10,000 employees and several Missiles Systems off-site locations. Hill is also responsible for an IT strategy that enables the business needs of Missile Systems defense programs and support organizations by providing secure and robust technologies/ solutions for our customers. Hill was appointed to her present position in 2002. In Hill's previous position as director of Information Technology at Missile Systems, she was responsible for providing vision and direction enabling the enterprise to achieve strategic technology and business objectives. Hill has more than 30 years experience in the defense industry, having held numerous management positions within Manufacturing Operations, System Engineering, Product Effectiveness, Reliability Engineering, Productivity/Quality, Supply Chain Management, Engineering Evaluation & Support, and Product Evaluation and Test Operations. Maryfran Johnson, Editor in Chief, CIO Magazine & Events
An award-winning IT journalist and editorial executive, Maryfran Johnson was named Editor in Chief of CIO magazine and events in January 2009. This unique dual role combines strategic direction of the leading publication for chief information officers with all editorial content for CXO Media's extensive portfolio of national and regional events.

Along with agenda content development and speaker recruitment, Maryfran also serves as the conference moderator for the CIO 100 Symposium, The CIO Year Ahead Summit, The CIO Leadership Event and the regional series of CIO Perspectives Forums launched in 2008.

Bruce Michelson, National Lifecycle Manager, Hewlett-Packard Company
Bruce Michelson is the National Lifecycle Manager for Hewlett-Packard’s Personal Systems Group (PSG). In this role, Bruce is responsible for engaging with Hewlett-Packard’s largest and most complex accounts in developing continuous process improvement plans and cost savings strategies. As a subject matter expert in lifecycle and the total cost of ownership, Bruce’s credentials include industry recognition for his independent research.

Bruce has been appointed and recognized as a Distinguished Technologist by Hewlett-Packard. Prior to assuming the role of National Lifecycle Manager, Bruce has held regional positions in the high technology field including expertise in the utility business model, lifecycle services, and cost management. A frequent keynote speaker representing Hewlett-Packard, Bruce has presented various lifecycle topics to a diverse group ranging from colleges and universities to senior executives.

Bruce has in excess of 30 years experience in the high technology, cost management, and total cost of ownership across multiple industry segments.

Glenn Noga is CIO of Polycom, Inc. responsible for overseeing all aspects of the global organization’s IT infrastructure and IT management processes, including creating and managing a converged, global IP network for high-quality voice, video and data communications.

Prior to joining Polycom, Glenn served in CIO/CTO capacities for leading companies including Handspring, Miadora.com, and Robert Half International. Jo-ann Olsovsky, Vice President, Technology Services and Chief Information Officer, BNSF Railway Company [Premier 100 Honoree, 2010]
Jo-ann Olsovsky is vice president, Technology Services, and chief information officer of BNSF Railway Company. She is responsible for delivery of BNSF’s telecommunications services, data center infrastructure, system applications, Internet presence, and all other information technology services. She reports to Matt Rose, BNSF's chairman, president and chief executive officer.

The BNSF technology team supports over 40,000 people in 28 states at over 2,000 locations.  The data center and application infrastructure support core business applications for railroad automation including transportation, geometry, engineering, mechanical and other business systems such as ERP.

Before being named to her present position in March 2008, Olsovsky served as assistant vice president, Telecommunications. Prior to joining BNSF Railway, Olsovsky was director – enterprise network services and technology support services at Verizon Communications (VZ) and previously at GTE. In these positions, she was responsible for planning, engineering, and support of GTE/Verizon Communications’ LAN/WAN environment consisting of over 20,000 servers, 6,000 routers/switches, at over 1,500 customer locations including both internal and commercial contract customers.

Olsovsky joined GTE in 1997 as LAN Operations Group Manager and was named director – technology support services in 1999.  Prior to GTE, Olsovsky spent 13 years at AT&T leading network planning, engineering and operations teams.

Olsovsky is a native of Kingston, Jamaica, and is of Cuban-Jamaican descent. She resides in Fort Worth, Texas, with her husband and four sons.  She has earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Nova Southeastern University; a Masters in Project Management from George Washington University; and a Masters of Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University.

Manesh Patel, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Sanmina-SCI
Mr. Manesh Patel is Sanmina-SCI’s Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer. In his current role, Mr. Patel is responsible for the global Information Technology (IT) team that supports all aspects of Sanmina-SCI’s operations.  Mr. Patel joined Sanmina-SCI in July 1997 and progressed through a number of senior IT management positions until the Company’s merger with SCI in 2001. During this period, Sanmina-SCI experienced revenue growth from $600 million to over $4 billion which provided Mr. Patel opportunities and challenges across all aspects of IT solutions, management and organization. He was instrumental in providing leadership in the development and implementation of the IT strategy that enabled international expansion, customer-focused services, and the successful integration of over 10 mergers and acquisitions.

In September 2006, Mr. Patel assumed the position of Chief Information Officer and has continued the globalization of the IT organization in conjunction with Sanmina-SCI’s multi-billion dollar operations worldwide. Prior to joining Sanmina-SCI, Mr. Patel was with the European operations of Ford Motor Company and moved to Silicon Valley in 1989 to lead the IT organizations of two start-up companies over a period of eight years.

Mr. Patel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Manchester University in England, and completed his Computer Science Masters coursework at San Jose State University in California.

James Quinn, Chief Information Officer, PHI Inc.

Sue Schade, Vice President and Chief Information Officer,
Brigham and Women's Hospital [Premier 100 Honoree, 2010]

Sue Schade serves as the Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Brigham and Women's/Faulkner Hospitals in Boston, Massachusetts. Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is a 777-bed nonprofit teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and founding member of Partners HealthCare System, an integrated health care delivery network. Schade provides direction and oversight to IT initiatives at Brigham and Women's and Faulkner Hospitals, Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization, and Biomedical Engineering.

Schade has 25 years experience in health care information technology management including 12 years at a large integrated delivery system in the Chicago area and 10 years in her current position. She has also worked for software vendors and consulting firms.

Schade served on the CHIME Board from 2004 to 2006 focusing on the national healthcare information technology agenda and fostering partnerships with other national organizations. She chaired the CHIME Education Foundation Board from 2006 to 2009. She currently serves on the HIMSS Public Policy Steering Committee. Schade holds an MBA degree from Illinois Benedictine College in Lisle, Illinois. She has achieved fellow status with both HIMSS and CHIME.

Under her leadership, BWH has received several recognitions including the HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 honor for its EMR Adoption Model and the CIO 100 Award for implementing the Balanced Scorecard to improve hospital performance.

David E. Smoley, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Flextronics International [Premier 100 Honoree, 2010]
David Smoley is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Flextronics, a position he has held since December 2006.  Leading IT publication, InformationWeek recently ranked Mr. Smoley as one of the top 50 Global CIOs -- IT Leaders Changing the Business World. Prior to Flextronics, Mr. Smoley served as Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Honeywell's Aerospace Electronics Systems.  Previously, he was Vice President and Limited Partner for Lovett Miller & Co., Venture Capital. Kenneth Spangler, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer,
Fedex Ground [Premier 100 Honoree, 2010]

Kenneth J. Spangler is Senior Vice President, Information Technology, and Chief Information Officer for FedEx Ground, Inc., the second largest domestic small package carrier. As Senior Vice President and CIO, Spangler is responsible for coordinating all information technology services for FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery and FedEx SmartPost in the U.S. and Canada. A team of 500 professionals and 150 external consultants perform new application development, maintenance of legacy systems, software quality assurance, information engineering, and PC/LAN services.

With over 20 years in the transportation industry, Spangler has been a leader of applying advanced technology in large, high transaction IT Systems. He has held various management positions in the Information Technology department, including: Vice President IT Field Systems Development, Managing Director Information Systems, Director Applications Development, Manager Applications Development and other management and technical roles. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and currently a member of the Pittsburgh Large Corporation CIO Roundtable, IBM Power System Board of Advisors, and University of Pittsburgh Industry Advisory Board.

Peter Whatnell, Chief Information, Officer, Sunoco Inc.
Whatnell was recruited by Sunoco in November 2001, to serve as Chief Information Officer to develop and implement the company’s IT renewal strategy. Prior to that he spent 17 years with Texaco including Head of IT Europe in London, moving to the USA in 1995, where he served in several Corporate Director positions in the Information Technology department and as the IT member on Texaco’s global technology policy and strategy team, finishing his service as General Manager IT in the shared services company for Texaco, Shell and Saudi Refining Inc. Peter is President Society for Information Management International, on the advisory council for the IT program at Villanova University School of Business and a board member with nPower Philadelphia, The Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Academy of Vocal Arts. Peter, and his wife Helen, live in Center City Philadelphia, while his two children and grandchildren still live in the UK.
