the next gen and implications for the higher education engagement agenda

On Friday 3 March 2017, the peak body for engagement in higher education – Engagement Australia – will once again convene the annual forum for all senior staff carrying leadership responsibilities for engagement and partnerships with business, industry and community.

In 2017, the Engagement Leaders forum will focus on the next generations of students and consider the implications for how universities engage with communities for mutual benefit, and importantly for student success.

This year our guest speaker is Dr Jan Owen AM, Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Young Australians. Dr Owen will be joined by a panel of students spanning multiple generational cohorts to spark a timely discussion on the critical role that engagement plays in the future world of work.

Engaging Futures will consider the motivators and drivers for engagement with students, industry and communities in order to equip the next generation of young people to rethink the world, make change and create a better future.

Universities Australia Graduate Employability Forum

The Universities Australia Graduate Employability Forum will be an opportunity for higher education professionals to come together to promote cooperation in work integrated learning, deepen university-industry relationships and showcase the achievements of the National Strategy on Work Integrated Learning. The forum will explore strategies to increase participation in work integrated learning programs and how Australia will benefit from initiatives to improve graduate employability.

 HES Symposium

Operationalising Higher Education Quality

An impressive line-up of speakers will tackle some of the most topical issues challenging the higher education sector at a UA Satellite event hosted by Higher Ed Services (HES).

 

Operationalising Higher Education Quality is the theme of the HES symposium which will be held from 8.30am until 12.45pm on Friday 3 March at the National Convention Centre in Canberra.

Professor Andrew Vann, Vice-Chancellor of Charles Sturt and HES Board member will launch the symposium which will also feature presentations on professional accreditation; peer review of assessment and accreditation; creating a national framework for student partnership in university decision-making and governance; and attrition and ATARs.

 

Confirmed presenters include Professions Australia CEO, Liz Lang and Honorary Treasurer and Board member, Klaus Veil, Emeritus Professor Christine Ewan, Dr Sara Booth, University of Tasmania, and Ittima Cherastidtham from the Grattan Institute. Other presenters will be confirmed soon and the full program will be available in early February on the HES website.

Meeting of Chairs of Academic Boards/Senates 
and other interested colleagues

All Chairs/Presidents and those directly interested in Academic Boards/Senates, or academic governance more broadly, are invited to meet and discuss developments and challenges in academic governance.

 The meeting will consider the implications of the rapidly evolving higher education sector regarding academic boards/senates, in the context of the Higher Education Standards Framework 2015. The meeting will include updates on earlier discussions about communication and collaboration between academic boards and senates; academic integrity and honesty; and the purpose and functions of academic boards and senates and their standing committees.

 The meeting will also provide opportunities for networking, discussing organisational planning and sharing strategies to promote academic excellence. Recently elected and appointed Chairs and Presidents are always particularly welcome, as these meetings can provide valuable encouragement and mentoring.

 Who should attend?

Chairs and Deputy Chairs of Academic Boards/Senates; board members and secretaries; other colleagues with an interest in academic governance and quality.

This half-day master class is developed and led by Lorna Somers, Vice President, McMaster University Foundation & Director of Development, McMaster University, who will be joined by two outstanding leaders in Australian higher education:

Professor Deep Saini, Vice-Chancellor of University of Canberra. Deep brings with him a wealth of experience in his previous role as President of University of Toronto Mississauga where he was deeply involved in philanthropy creating a huge impact for the institution. He also led major expansions and internationalization of enrolments, hired nearly 100 additional professors, and oversaw a $250 million expansion of facilities.

Professor Marnie Hughes-Warrington, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Australian National University. Marnie’s contributions to university philanthropy are well known both nationally and internationally. She has led the achievement of $107 million AUD in gifts for ANU in three years, including the largest gift given by an Australian to an Australian university ($100 million).

This master class will also feature Belinda Robinson, Chief Executive of Universities Australia who will talk about the trends in Australia’s education landscape and its impact on advancement, as well as highlights of the CASE Charitable Giving to Universities in Australia and New Zealand Survey. Belinda is a highly experienced Chief Executive of peak national organizations, with an extensive background in public policy and in the private sector.
