Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the symposium, the participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the potential role of the MD in the current opioid crisis.
  2. Educate patients in an evidence-based manner on the topic of cannabis.
  3. Use biological therapies in the treatment of rheumatological diseases and assess side effects and interactions with other common medical therapies.
  4. Apply evidence-based strategies to managing the psychological and behavioral components of dementia including appropriate use of safe medications.
  5. Use narcotics appropriately to reduce sickle cell pain.
  6. Identify Drug Seeking Behavior (DSB) flags to deter prescription drug diversion and abuse, as well as distinguishing drug seeking patients from those needing appropriate medical care.
  7. Utilize injection of pain medication to address chief complaints of localized pain.
  8. Use alternative pain management modalities such as acupuncture as an option for pain control.
  9. Know when to appropriately refer patients to genetics for potentially impactful genetic syndromes.

ABIM Maintenance of Certification (MOC)
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 6.5 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Participation information will be shared with ABIM through PARS.
