NEOBIOTA 2018

WELCOME MESSAGE

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you planning to attend Neobiota 2018, the 10th International Conference on Biological Invasions: New Directions in Invasion Biology, which will be held in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, Ireland. Dún Laoghaire (often pronounced phonetically Dunleary) is a small town on the east coast of Ireland, about seven miles (11km) south of the capital Dublin. Its focal point is an attractive harbour and seafront, with a new iconic library and social centre. There are lots to do in the area, with a wide range of services and amenities in the immediate locality. The town has easy access to Dublin city and all its tourist attractions through the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) suburban train service and other transport links, including a direct Coach Service from Dublin airport that stops directly outside the front of the Royal Marine Hotel.

Dúnlaoghaire gets its name from the Irish translation Fort (Dún) of Laoghaire but was later renamed Dunleary and, more recently, Kingstown, after the visit of King George IV of England to honour his visit to the town in 1821. In 1921 it was changed back to the ancient Irish name Dún Laoghaire.

The Royal Marine Hotel opened in 1865, but probably dates back to 1828, has a commanding view of the sea and Dublin bay and is regarded as a Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Institution. It is regarded as one of the finest 4 star Hotels in Dublin and has hosted many Heads of State, Kings, Queens and celebrities, including Frank Sinatra, Laurel & Hardy and Charlie Chaplin!

The hotel boosts a range of high quality rooms and top class features, including a heated pool, sauna and steam room and complimentary parking, and the nearby Pier Health Club is available to residents, so conference participants and accompanying persons should be well catered for.

All that remains for me to say is, enjoy the meeting and your stay in Dun Laoghaire!

Céad Mile Fáilte,

Bruce Osborne
