Presented by: Richard Monahan, DDS, MS, JD  (see bio)
Board Certified in Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology
Subject:  731 - Digital Radiology
Hours:  3     Participation
Location:  UIC College of Dentistry 3D LearnLab

                  Chicago, IL 60612 (Map)

Cost:     Members:  $495              Non-members:  $595

Description: CBCT scans will be systematically reviewed in order to illustrate normal anatomy, variations of normal and indications of pathology. A standardized approach to diagnostic interpretation will be demonstrated. A protocol that promotes the diagnosis of oral/maxillofacial structures as well as the evaluation of craniofacial/paranasal sinus conditions will provide the doctor with the background necessary to make clinically correct diagnostic decisions. From acute rhinosinusitis to ethmoid osteomas each case presentation will enhance the participant’s knowledge of craniofacial conditions that necessitate referral and treatment. Navigation and clinical software tools will be explained, driven and applied to actual clinical cases. Each computer is equipped with 25 select clinical cases.

      Learning Objectives:

  • Demystify CBCT: move your 2D knowledge base into the world of 3D diagnosis and treatment.
  • Develop a standardized protocol that identifies normal anatomy, variations of normal and pathology of the oral/maxillofacial region.
  • Appreciate, drive and apply navigational software tools utilizing actual clinical cases.
  • Understand FOV, partial volume averaging, beam hardening and the effects of digital image processing.
  • Compare CBCT to panoramic radiology and CT/CAT scans in terms of diagnostic yield, radiation dose, advantages and limitations.
  • See why orthogonal orientation is always the first adjustment for any data set.
  • Calcifications and pneumatizations: those you should care about and those you can dismiss.
  • Appreciate paranasal sinus disease: common conditions vs. clinical concerns.
  • Grasp the evidence-based relevance of CBCT airway analysis software.
  • Clarify 2016 CDT: Dental Procedure Codes related to CBCT.
  • Understand how to write a Radiology Report: format, content, depth, necessity.
  • Understand the legal implications of 3D imaging: standard of care vs. state of the art.
  • Determine when and if you should go 3D.
  • Know when to refer: from an opacified ostiomeatal complex to obstructive concha bullosa each case will increase the participant’s knowledge of conditions that necessitate referral.
  • Obtain hands-on experience in a state-of-the-science 3D LearnLab.
  • Know where to obtain continued growth, development and support: specific articles, journals, textbooks, websites, seminars, professional organizations.
