Bringing 20 years of experience problem solving, recommending products and creating compliance tools to her clients, Kris’s students leave her classes and clients with tangible plans and applications for their companies.
Kris has spent the last 10 years as the Director of Northwest Independent Contractors Association helping businesses that do not have Safety, Human Resource, or Consultants on staff.

Craig S. Aman is a member of the Leadership Team at MD Solutions International (MDSI) and also serves as a Captain/Paramedic for the Seattle Fire Department. Craig was an early leader in the national initiative to deploy public access defibrillation programs and is recognized as an expert in early defibrillation response, having managed the implementation of several hundred AED programs.  He has a unique background, blending more than 30 years of experience in the areas of pre-hospital care, corporate emergency response, emergency medical systems, fire/rescue operations and corporate management.

Christa Arguinchona is an Assistant Nurse Manager in the Intensive Care Unit and the Project Coordinator for the Special Pathogens Unit at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center. Christa is an RN who has 29 years of experience in critical care nursing specialized in neurological/trauma.

Stephanie Arnold is the Safety & Security Manager for U.S. Oil & Refining Co. with 15+ years’ experience in industrial health and safety and process safety management (PSM). She is a chartered chemical engineer with knowledge in both petrochemical and oil refining industries. Stephanie is also a board member of the Governor’s Industrial Health & Safety Advisory Board.
 
John Bair

John Bair is the Training Coordinator / Safety for Pierce County, Public Works, Road Operations. John has been in safety with Road Op’s for about 15 years. We set up about 5200 work zone each year. John teaches several different trainings to all divisions in Public Works and for other municipalities. John believes safety is the most important job we do.
 
Bridget Ballek
Bridget Ballek is the Public Relations Manager for the National Safety Council. She manages social media for the Council, promoting and sharing its initiatives which include distracted driving, prescription drug overdose, fatigue in the workplace, teen driving and Safe Communities. Bridget is also on the other side of the screen as Bridget in “Bridget Curbside,” a vlogger video series created to reach the public at an emotional level. Prior to her current role, she managed Teen Safe Driving Coalitions in 10 different states which were built to educate parents, teens and community members on how to protect teen drivers through Graduated Driver Licensing.

Graduated High School in 1978. Worked for a Logging contractor until 1987 when my Dad and I started our own Logging Company. I purchased my Dad’s shares in the Company in 1997 and built the company to as many as 30 employees (including subcontractors). When I sold the Logging Company in 2007 it was required that I help manage the day to day operations for 3 years. After my commitment was complete I retired until Sept of 2013 when I became the Safety Coordinator for the Associated Logging Contractors of Idaho.
 
Chris Baumgartner

Chris Baumgartner is the Drug Systems Director at the Department of Health. Prior to his appointment in 2015, he served in various capacities for 10 years, including working for the Department as the Prescription Monitoring Program Director and owning a consulting firm that provided training and technical services to federal and state governments. He also worked for the WA State Department of Social and Health Services as an IT Portfolio Analyst and managed the Prescription Monitoring Program for the State of Maine while with the Office of Substance Abuse.
 
Craig Blackwood

Craig Blackwood was appointed as the Deputy Assistant Director for the Division of Occupational Safety & Health in December 2014. He was the DOSH Statewide Compliance Manager for DOSH since March 2012. The Compliance Program is responsible for all DOSH inspection-related activities. Craig has been with L&I since 1991, starting in Seattle as an Industrial Hygienist in DOSH Compliance. After spending 3 years in the field, Craig took the position of Industrial Hygiene Supervisor in Region 4, working out of the Vancouver office. In July 2004 Craig was appointed to the Region 4 Compliance Manager position, which then became the DOSH Region 4 Compliance Manager in 2006. Craig has Bachelor of Science degree in environmental and occupational safety and health from California State University at Northridge. Prior to working for L&I, he worked as an Industrial Hygienist for the Los Angeles Unified School District and as an Industrial Hygienist for a private consulting firm in Los Angeles.

Travis is an accomplished professional with 15 years of construction safety experience. Travis earned a Master’s Degree in Human Services from Concordia University and currently holds designations as a Construction Safety Specialist through UW & as a Certified Health & Safety Technician through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Travis is an active participant in several local safety committees and serves as a certified OSHA 10 & 30 Instructor.
 
David Byers
WA Dept. of Ecology
David Byers is the Spill Response Manager for the WA Department of Ecology where he oversees Ecology’s statewide spill response activities to over 4,000 spill incidents each year. In addition to duties as State On-Scene Coordinator for major hazardous material incidents in Washington, he also currently serves as Battalion Chief and Medical Services Officer for SouthBay Fire Department in Thurston County. In June of 2016, David was Washington State’s Unified Command representative (State On-Scene Coordinator) during the Mosier Crude Oil Train Derailment and Fire.

Susan Campbell

Susan has been at Labor and Industries since 2000. She has worked on designing, implementing, and evaluating the Centers of Occupational Health and Education (COHE). She is the lead for L&I's PGAP™ pilot, and was trained in the PGAP program in March 2014.
 
John Carlson

John Carlson has worked in construction and general industry safety for the past 28 years. This includes maritime work, heavy industrial, petrochemical, manufacturing hospitals and biotech work. During that time he has also worked in the environmental field managing Large Quantity Generator programs working on remediation sites, writing Site Safety and Health Plans for hazardous waste sites, acted in the capacity of emergency response spill coordinator.
John has administered state fund and self- insured workers compensation programs, safety and health programs and environmental programs in the 11 western states.
Additionally John has also worked in consulting, providing training, industrial hygiene, ergonomics training, program development and guidance on claims management and workers compensation issues for clients.
 
Rhett Carpenter
Rhett James Carpenter is a Central Washington University graduate, holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety & Health Management, and minors in both Risk & Environmental Management. As a collegiate athlete, Rhett achieved Hall of Fame honors during his football career as a Wildcat. Throughout his years, Rhett has gained extensive experience in the construction and general industries alike. As a Safety, Health & Environmental Professional, Rhett is committed to achieving excellence in all facets of his work. As the Safety & Training Director for The Integrated Group, Inc., Mr. Carpenter holds credentials as a CHST, and is an instructor for a plethora of safety, health & environmental related courses taught throughout many states. Mr. Carpenter is a Region X instructor for a variety of courses at the University of Washington Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. He is an authorized instructor through the Department of Ecology and provides Erosion and Sediment Control courses to many contractors throughout the state. In addition, he provides environmental services to many organizations. Rhett is also the facilitator for the Puget Sound Safety Summit Conference, a monthly gathering of a networked alliance of government, management and labor, who come together to develop methods and solutions for the industry. While working with many organizations throughout his career, Rhett has assisted in the development, improvement and implementation of safety, health & environmental programs. He has performed a multitude of consultation services, training and oversite, ensuring the overall effectiveness of risk management at all levels.
 
Wilma Cartagena

Wilma Cartagena: is a Civil Rights Investigator with the Washington State Human Rights Commission (WSHRC). She has been with the WSHR Commission for 9 and a half years, and her main focus is investigating discrimination complaints in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodation, credit, insurance and Whistleblower Retaliation (state employees). Ms. Cartagena has a Bachelor's degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Human Resources with emphasis in Employee Relations and Development. She is active in the community she works addressing social justice issues in the Latino/Hispanic Community. She is a member of the Eastern Washington University Advisory Board at the School of Public Service and also a Board Member of the North Central Washington Hispanic Chamber, among others. Ms. Cartagena is originally from Puerto Rico, and lived in Spokane for 15 years prior to her move to Wenatchee.

Dr. Greg Carter is Medical Director of St Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute and the Center of Occupational Health and Education for eastern WA. He is on the Industrial Insurance Medical Advisory Committee for the Department of Labor and Industries in WA state. He is a past recipient of the Distinguished Researcher Award from the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the Best Research Paper Award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
 
Mark R. Clark

Mark Clark is a Program Coordinator in the IAM/Boeing Joint Programs organization at the Boeing Company. Mark has worked at the Boeing Company since 1996, when he joined the 777 program in the Commercial Airplanes business unit in the Wing Majors organization as a mechanic. In this role Mark worked on the trailing edge of the wing. In 2000, Mark became a Union Steward, appointed by the President of IAM District 751. As a Union Steward, Mark was an advocate for safety for the union members and worked to promote positive relationships between union members and the company. He teaches a number of IAM/Boeing Joint Programs safety courses and organizes the annual IAM Golf Tournament that benefits the Guide Dogs of America non-profit organization. Mark regularly participates in holiday giving events and enjoys golfing, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Over the past twenty-three years as a Physical Therapist and Industrial Kinesiologist, David Coates has developed numerous ergonomics and musculoskeletal injury prevention programs including movement safety programs, Industrial Athlete, early intervention/job-attached rehabilitation and return to work programs. David’s focus is on reducing the human and financial costs of musculoskeletal injury. All efforts are aimed at teaching people how their body is built and how it operates so that they can stronger and healthier from physical work and give their body what it needs during seated and sedentary work.

Dave is a Technical Specialist for the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries in Standards and Technical Services for the Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) and specializes in Commercial and Industrial Construction safety.  He spent 22 years as a Commercial Construction General Contractor and in his spare time, works to find a cure for cancer.  He is a self professed gadget geek and and technology nerd.

Daniel Cundiff is a Program Manager that joined the Boeing Company in 1996 as a structures mechanic for the 777 program. Later managing aircraft assembly, supplier management for Alenia Aeronautica in Italy and then managing Shipside Support for 787 aircraft manufacturing. Daniel joined IAM/Boeing Joint Programs in 2009 with the responsibility of designing and delivering safety and training related projects and products to the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers and all those that support them. Joint Programs is focused on improving health, safety, and education in the workplace through its unique labor-management partnership.
 
Rad Cunningham

Rad Cunningham is an Epidemiologist with the Washington State Department of Health working with the Washington Tracking Network (WTN) on healthy community design and is the lead environmental public health legionella coordinator. VOX.com recently published a national lead risk map infographic using methods Rad created for Washington State. Using methods developed by the Oregon Tracking Network he used driver’s license data to estimate age-adjusted Body Mass Index (BMI) to help understand environmental risk factors for obesity in Washington State. Rad has a Masters of Public Health and a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Washington and has worked on international health projects in Paraguay, South Sudan, and Equatorial Guinea. Rad is also the Washington State Health Department coordinator for Health Impact Assessments and is on the steering committee of the Northwest Health Impact Assessment Network.

Derrick Dennis is the Water Quality and Data Management Section Manager for the Department of Health, Office of Drinking Water where he has worked for 16 years. He has been the Office of Drinking Water’s point person for implementation of the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) since 2001 and has worked with EPA and other states since 2004 on recommended revisions to the LCR, serving on several teams and workgroups at a national level. Most recently, Derrick was a member of the National Drinking Water Advisory Council’s (NDWAC) LCR Long-term Revisions Workgroup.

In 2013, ATL was honored as one of America’s Five Safest Companies by EHS Magazine. Most importantly, however, Joe has been married to his high school sweetheart for 36 years, and the greatest lessons he has learned about enjoying and valuing life come from spending time with his son, daughter, their spouses and three high energy grandsons.

His last 4 years wearing tools involved running Scaffold and Shoring crews - and was drafted onto the committee to revise Washington’s Fall Protection Standards. Gary’s interest in Safety is informed by his 12 years of assistance/advocacy for Injured Workers. JD Fernstrom has worked in the forestry industry for 35yrs. both as an equipment operator and certified technician. He worked for the US Forest Service for 8 years then went on to employment at various Outdoor Power Equipment dealers in Washington State. During this time his focus was on chain saws used by forestry professionals. For the last 20yrs. JD has been the Technical Services Manager for STIHL Northwest, a branch of STIHL Inc. that distributes STIHL products in WA, OR, ID, and AK. His duties are to advise dealer technicians regarding repair procedures and warranty authorization, customer service for end-users or the product, as well as training dealer technicians and end-users in the repair, maintenance, and use of STIHL Outdoor Power Equipment.
 
Dr. Gary Franklin MD, MPH

Dr. Franklin obtained the M.D. degree from George Washington University, and the M.P.H. degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a board-certified neurologist whose current positions are 1) Medical Director, Washington State Department of Labor and Industries, and 2) Research Professor, Departments of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, and Medicine (Neurology), University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

Dr. Franklin is an expert in evidence-based health policy, including the development of practice guidelines, technology assessments, and coverage decisions. Dr. Franklin leads the Washington State Agency Medical Director’s Group, is a recent past chair of the American Academy of Neurology’s Quality Standards Subcommittee, and is a member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Research Program’s Advisory Committee.

Dr. Franklin has published 91 studies in peer-reviewed scientific journals, with an emphasis on outcome studies of work-related musculoskeletal disorders, program evaluation of new health delivery models in workers’ compensation, disability prevention studies for work-related disorders, and epidemiologic studies of neurologic disorders. He is a regular peer reviewer for the scientific journals Neurology, JAMA, Neuroepidemiology, and the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.

Karen Galipeau Forner is the founder and managing member of K-Solutions Law in Bellevue. Karen represents employers in the areas of workplace safety, workers' compensation, administrative appeals and employment law. She is a frequent presenter at continuing legal education seminars and to employer groups. Karen offers on-site training and presentations on diversity, harassment, employment law and other topics to meet client needs.
Prior to K-Solutions Law, Karen worked as Senior Attorney at a law firm in Seattle and at the Washington State Attorney General’s Office. She was the Program Advisor for the Industrial Insurance and Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) Discrimination Programs for more than ten years and the Program Advisor for the Workers’ Compensation Self-Insurance Program. Karen also litigated complex WISHA, Industrial Insurance, Third Party and Crime Victims Compensation Act cases.

Raylene also acts as the Safety Coordinator for the Wastewater Maintenance Division and holds certification in PNCWA, WWCPA II, AWWA Water Utility Management Institute Advanced Management and Leadership, NASCO TV Certification, Stormwater BMP Inspection and Maintenance, Practical Sustainability, and is a Special Police Officer.

Ms. Hayes graduated from the University of Washington in 1991 with degrees in English and Communication, and from Washington State University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She received her law degree, summa cum laude, from Gonzaga University in 1998, where she was a Thomas More Scholar and associate editor of the Gonzaga Law Review. Kirk Hendrickson is a Regional Health, Safety, and Environmental Manager for a country wide paper making and box manufacturer. Kirk has spent nearly 27 years in the papermaking industry as a paper mill hourly worker, a pulp mill supervisor, a mill safety coordinator, and a regional health and safety manager. Through that time he has seen many improvements in safety, but also many terrible injuries to friends and coworkers including two fatalities. Continuously pushing to improve workplace safety is a passion we must all take ownership in to drive it forward.

Kim Henry is an Industrial Hygienist for SAIF Corporation. She was a maintenance mechanic before entering the environmental, health and safety field. She’s worked in EHS for 12 years. Kim was EHS Manager at Ball Aerospace in Colorado before moving to Oregon. She has experience managing EHS in a large school district, and performing industrial hygiene services in the biotech and construction industries. She obtained her Master’s degree in Environmental Health from Colorado State University.

Stan is a Source Water Quality Program Manager for the Washington State Department of Health. He provides technical assistance to public water systems as they add new drinking water sources, interpret chemical monitoring requirements or address chemical detections. In addition, Stan is part of the team that works with water systems as they respond to acute contamination events such as finding E. coli in drinking water. He has also represented the Department of Health at public meetings addressing chemical contamination in water supplies and lead in drinking water. Stan has an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and a graduate degree in Public Health from the University of Utah. His graduate practicum evaluated access to drinking water on the Navajo Nation in southeastern Utah and northern Arizona. He has worked in public health since 2007

She has a passion for process safety and human factors in the manufacturing workforce, including how people learn and retain information. Her background includes alarm management expertise, safety system design, and operational experience in the oil and gas, refining, and petrochemical sectors across the global within Shell.
 
Ninica Howard

Ms. Howard, a certified professional ergonomist, has been performing occupational health and safety research with the SHARP Program for over 18 years. A major area of research for Ninica is the identification and control of work-related musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. Since 2007, Ninica has been involved in research of WMSDs in healthcare. She has evaluated the impact of the WA Hospital Safe Patient Handling Law in Washington State, acted as coordinator of the WA Safe Patient Handling Steering Committee and was a member of the interprofessional group that developed the American Nurses’ Association’s Safe Patient Handling and Mobility National Standards. Ms. Howard also sits on the editorial board of the American Journal of Safe Patient Handling and Mobility. She has conducted field research in several healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes and home care

Tony has a 37-year career working in the construction industry. 27 of them full-time in safety. He is the Safety Director for Hoffman Construction where he has worked for 20+ years. He has been a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers since 1989 and has held various officer positions during his tenure. He is also a member of the Washington Governor’s Safety and Health Advisory Board and the Oregon OSHA Construction Advisory Committee.

Peter Johnson, PhD, is a Professor in the Occupational and Environmental Exposure Sciences program, specializing in ergonomics. He earned his Doctorate in Bioengineering from the University of California - Berkeley and has worked as a researcher at the National Institutes of Occupational Health in the United States, Sweden and Denmark. Dr. Johnson and his lab are nationally and internationally recognized for their work evaluating seating alternatives to reduce vehicle operator exposures to Whole Body Vibration (WBV). Currently, in cooperation with Northeastern University, the University of Connecticut, Oregon State University and Pontifical Xavierian University, his lab is conducting studies to evaluate ways to reduce WBV exposures in the semi-truck, bus and mining industries. Dr. Johnson is a member of the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) Whole Body Vibration Committee and an American Delegate on the International Standards Organization (ISO) Whole Body Vibration Committee and participates in the annual standard meetings of these organizations. In addition, Dr. Johnson has worked with Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and Logitech assisting with the design, and evaluation and introduction of new tablets, notebook computers, keyboards and mice, and with Steelcase on the design and introduction of new ergonomic office furniture.

 
Rachel Jorren

Rachel Jorren is an Instructional Designer with the organizational training and consulting firm Training Connections and has been doing project work for the IAM/Boeing Joint Programs organization at the Boeing Company since 2001. In her current role, Rachel leads a team of course developers in creating customized interactive safety crew meeting training for western Washington Boeing locations in the Commercial Airplanes business unit. Previously, Rachel worked as an instructor teaching union members a variety of computer skills. Prior to Boeing, Rachel worked as a Microsoft Certified Trainer, as she is a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. She also holds certifications in A+, Net+, and i-Net.

Marianne Klaas started her career 31 years ago as a nurse at Swedish Medical Center. She then transitioned into staff development then maneuvered her career into accreditation and safety. Marianne is the Administrative Director for Accreditation, Safety, Injury Management, and Clinical Quality Investigations for Swedish Medical Center’s 5 hospital campuses and 2 ambulatory care centers. Marianne is primarily responsible for the regulatory and accreditation oversight of these hospitals and ambulatory care centers. She is well versed in The Joint Commission and Det Norske Veritas standards. Marianne also provides consultation on the Hospital Incident Command System- a structured program to manage all emergencies. Marianne has her Nursing Degree and Master’s Degree in Nursing, as well as certifications in healthcare safety and accreditation.

Jeannette Murphy is an occupational therapist and certified ergonomist in Spokane WA. She works for Providence Health & Services as the Regional Manager of Injury Prevention & Ergonomics for eastern Washington and Montana. Her professional career has focused on improving worker safety and injury prevention through safe patient handling and ergonomics. While at St Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute (1994-2014), Jeannette worked in Occupational Rehabilitation and Pain Program (SIMP). She also developed an Injury Prevention program (2002-2011) that effectively reduced staff injuries caused by patient handling injuries by 52% and helped create a return to work program that included light duty and modifying the work environment. Jeannette served on the Washington State Safe Patient Handling Steering Committee (2004-2011) that developed and published best practice guidelines for implementing the 2006 Washington State Safe Patient Handling Law. She was also was involved in the early development of the Eastern Washington Center of Occupational Health & Education (2002-2006). Jeannette has presented regularly at the national, state and local level on safe patient handling, ergonomics, preventing disability/chronicity, and successful return to work programs. Jeannette was certified as an ergonomist by the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics in 2002 and was recently selected as the 2016 UW Alumnus of the Year by the UW OT Division Advisory Board for outstanding contributions to the advancement of occupational therapy as a profession by improving clinician and patient safety with safe patient handling.

Mike is Parker Smith & Feek’s Risk Control Specialist and a Principal of the firm. His role is to develop proactive Risk Control programs designed to reduce exposures to hazardous or dangerous conditions that could lead to injury or property damage. He works with our Account Service Teams and clients to identify safety and risk control practices, and assists in implementing appropriate programs to avoid or limit loss. Typical areas of investigation include fire hazards, earthquake, flood, and other natural perils. Mike also serves as a resource in property valuations and is available to assist our clients in safety, disaster planning, and crisis management. John came to F.I.R.S.T Choice Training with well over 20 years of experience in the Maritime Industry as a Trainer in areas ranging from Search and Rescue, Container Inspection, to Port Security Operations. Additionally, while serving in a technical trainer’s capacity John has traveled to over 48 countries as well as across the United States to facilitate needed training to help establish baselines for emerging growth countries and aiding domestic government agencies. John wholeheartedly believes that having a strong emphasis on training is paramount for sustained corporate growth whereas it goes hand in hand with establishing benchmarks for success and educating all stakeholders in processes, techniques, and mandated standards.
