Level: BeginnerDescription of Workshop Levels
Technique: Metal Clay

Fundamentals, skills, and techniques covered:
• Make an organic texture in metal clay
  • Sculpt a tiny bird out of fine silver clay
  • Stretch your imagination to make a house of your design
 • Become familiar with FYI silver clay
 • Use embeddable findings

In this class we will take advantage of the high shrinkage properties of FYI silver clay to make charming and unique birdhouse pendants. Each student will design their own pendants: the possibilities are endless, and no two houses are alike. I will show you an easy way to sculpt a tiny bird for your house, as well as examples of how to create various organic textures. You will receive more than enough fine silver clay to make at least two houses, depending on how large you want your houses to be. The number of pendants that you complete in class depends on how detailed you choose to work. You WILL complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Basic metal clay skills are helpful, as is the ability to work with precision.

Materials you are required to bring:
Hairdryer, small cardboard or wooden box. Opti-visor or similar is recommended.

Technique: Metal Clay, Stone Setting - Cabachon

Fundamentals, skills, and techniques covered:
• Deal with the shrinkage properties of metal clay
  • Impart a texture onto metal clay
  • Build a clever, no-solder stone setting
 • Sink the setting securely into the clay
 • Learn to set a cabochon

In this workshop, students will make a beautiful pendant of their own design from fine silver metal clay, featuring a beautiful, non-fireable cabochon stone, such as turquoise, tiger eye, etc. The clay will be cut and textured, and a setting of fine silver bezel wire will be anchored securely into the pendant: no soldering required. Fine silver decorations and a bail of your choice will be added. Students learn techniques to work against the shrinkage of the silver clay, so that the stone fits after the pendant has been fired. Your finished will be a work of art that you can wear home from class. You WILL complete this project in class.

Prerequisites/Skills Needed: Basic metal clay skills are desirable, but not a must.

Materials you are required to bring:
A hairdryer, sharp tweezers, small cardboard or wooden box. A pair of jewelry-making pliers, any kind will do.
