Gulnaz Tariq
Senior Charge Nurse/ Unit Manager - Nursing
SKMC

It was a hot August 1979 when I joined Armed forces Nursing Services in Pakistan. I thought that entering this kind of academia and career will provide me a new will as a caregiver and a servant in my countrymen leaving me no fear to go with a strict training. I seriously focused in studying to gain the most in depth learning, views and values from our dear professors and I may say with pride and honor that I got my RN with momentous victory receiving top position in Punjab, and passing the RM with honor. My mind was delightfully set on a dream to become a perfect Medical Surgical Nurse. My symbol of courage by having two stars on my shoulder added value for me to continue serving humanity. But sometimes, the battle about egoism and opportunities explored more than what I desire. I want to seek more and look forward to other door of success so I decided to resign. New endeavor opened and on 5th July 1986 I joined Emergency Nursing in Abu Dhabi. I was oriented and born as a detail-oriented, meticulous, and organized person. I have been told that the emergency care environment needs such strong character. That is a warm and bright signal and I felt the passion within that I had an excellent chance of securing employment on that unit. With huge desire and love in my profession I instantly fit in with the team and begun to develop relationships with the physicians and nurses.

There was a time in our journey that we remember the old days, up to this time I can’t forget my experience rounding with a dressing nurse during my senior year of nursing school. It was such a challenging and an immensely educational experience. During the height of our wound care education in nursing school, we learned the proper application and technique of a sterile wet-to-dry dressing and bandaging in our practical room.

Since then my heart was pounding and my mind was showing new great interest and I was totally attached to a new passion for dressing. That is the time that I decided that I would like to be a wound care nurse. As the days passing on, my nursing life was well fulfilling giving me lights and stars where I work with love and care, resulting to a wonderful full-time position in wound care. Life goes on and years have passed but my wound care desires continue to grow. I loved the people, the structured environment, and the interactions with other staff.

The following year in my position as a Wound Care RN was an experience like none other. I organize courses, conferences, attended multiple educational conferences, learning the intricacies of acute and chronic wound care. I bring the IIWCC to Abu Dhabi with the help of Dr. Afsaneh Alavi under auspice of Prof. Garry Sibbald from University of Toronto. I had amazing mentors, both physicians and nurses from Toronto who had a genuine interest in sharing knowledge and healing patients.

I develop interdisciplinary wound care team and wound care link nurses program in all the units....it was learning via clinical immersion at its finest! I was hooked. This was the life for me. Learning new skills, helping patients, and working with others who share the same passion: using knowledge and experience to solve the puzzle that is a patient with a wound.

Fast-forward eight exciting years, and I am now Manager for wound care, Chairperson of wound care advisory group for all Seha hospital, President of international interprofessional wound care group (IIWCG) and preparing for Bidding WUWHS congress 2020 for Abu Dhabi. serve on several other international committees. I have also returned to academia in pursuit of MSc in skin integrity and dermatology so that I may be more involved in the research for patients with chronic wounds.

Now after all that achievements and hard work desiring to deliver the best, want to share my journey of Nursing which always make me proud of who I am as a Nurse and bring evidence based practice to the community
